Moving to Williamsburg in 2027; hoping to start connecting with locals ahead of time!

Hi everyone, I'm glad to see that a dedicated subreddit exists for Williamsburg. I'd like to introduce myself and explain some things you should know about me, in the hopes that I can start finding people in/around Williamsburg to connect with.

First of all, I am not yet living in the area or even in the USA. I was born and raised in Ontario, Canada, and frankly I never thought I'd ever move away from my childhood home... but then in January 2025, I ended up meeting a person online who is now my future husband. He just so happens to be from Newport News but has lived in Williamsburg since 2021.

I've been to visit him 5 times in total over the past year or so. The first two times we stayed in Hampton with some friends of his who lived there at the time, but every other time we have stayed in Williamsburg together. He's also been to visit me in Canada once already, and he will be coming a second time for our engagement party in August.

As of a couple weeks ago, I have just started the process of preparing to apply for what is called the K-1 Fiance visa. I will hopefully obtain the visa by June or July of 2027 at the latest, and once I use it to enter the USA, I will have to stay there to marry him and then apply for Adjustment of Status. Needless to say, it's a long and complex process for sure, but I am thoroughly looking forward to the end result.

With all of this being said, the hardest part of living together will be having to stay at home by myself while he works his shifts at his full time job. I am also going to be applying for a US work authorization permit alongside adjustment of status, but even once I have that, I will only really be able to work about 15 hours per week at best due to the disabilities I have (I will explain a bit more about that soon). So I am hoping that I'll be able to connect with patient, flexible, understanding people who can provide company and friendship to the best of their abilities.

For some context, I am on the autism spectrum and have relatively severe ADHD, as well as some other co-existing mental illness. When I've tried going to social gatherings in the local community where I've lived my entire life, it has been more overwhelming and overstimulating than anything else – I don't do well with having to be the one to initiate conversations face-to-face, so I ended up just sitting there quietly hoping that someone else would try to talk with me about something, but no one ever did. It was quite disheartening and I left feeling defeated.

I'll be completely transparent, my hangout style is not exactly conventional. I have a very short attention span due to aforementioned ADHD, meaning that I cannot focus on one activity for more than MAYBE an hour at a time. Even with things I consider hobbies and enjoyable activities, I get tired of it after 30 minutes to an hour at most. (I am on a low dose of ADHD meds, but still have a long way to go in figuring out what's going to work for me medication wise.) After I've had enough of doing something, I tend to only really have the mental energy to doomscroll on my phone essentially... I just lose motivation and become extremely exhausted very quickly, no matter how much I enjoy the activity I'm doing. I'm definitely the type of person who usually prefers to just hang out with someone in the same room while we do our own seperate things, with occasional conversation whenever a topic comes to mind.

Also, from time to time I do have very intense emotional moments. I won't pretend that I am perfect or completely stable in every way, but I can promise that I am doing my absolute best to become a better version of myself every day. I am about to begin biweekly therapy sessions in a couple weeks, I take my medications on a daily basis, and I receive services from a psychiatrist, occupational therapist, etc. I'm just hoping I can find people in my soon-to-be new city who have what it takes to show me friendship – one thing I do know about myself is that I will go above and beyond to show my care and support to anyone who does so for me. Loyalty comes naturally to me and I am happy to always be there for anyone who is there for me.

In conclusion, I suppose I should also share a bit about my specific interests and such to see if there's any compatibility out there.

• I am a 23 year old female, for now I am still living with my parents in Ontario until the time comes to move to Williamsburg. I have not had a job at any point in my life, but my fiance is quite confident that he will be able to get me a part time position at the store in Williamsburg where he has worked for the past 12 years.

• My hobbies and interests include: nail art, scrapbooking, creative journaling, paper crafts (lots of different types of arts and crafts honestly), as well as baking, pop music, and basically anything involving cats. My childhood home has 6 cats that currently live in it. I don't typically mind being around dogs, but they can be a bit overstimulating at times and I wouldn't personally own one.

• I do not drive or have a car, and I don't ever really intend to get my license because I have far too much anxiety and doubt that I would be able to drive properly. So bonus points if you have a car and/or driver's license!

I know this was a really long post, so thank you for taking the time to read all of it. I ask if you don't have anything helpful or kind to say that you simply scroll past this post – I've been quite nervous for a while to write and publish this, and the last thing I need is any further insecurity. Thanks again for your consideration, I look forward to experiencing the next chapter of my life in Williamsburg.

Williamsburg for someone afraid of bugs?

Hi all. I got a job in Williamsburg and am thinking of taking it, but I have a pretty bad mosquito allergy, biting midges love me, and I'm irrationally afraid of Palmetto bugs.

Just wondering how bad Williamsburg really is in this regard.

For what it's worth, I have my eye on a third floor apartment at Governor's on North Henry, which is a pretty new, modern apartment building in the heart of CW. My job isn't at CW but I would want to spend a decent amount of time there, walking around, going to coffee shops, soaking up the atmosphere.

I've only ever visited in late fall and winter, so I'm worried about spring, summer, and early fall.

I realize this probably sounds ridiculous to most people but having to constantly watch out for insects that will bite me (no matter what type of bug spray I wear) or having to wake up to see a Palmetto bug on my apartment wall...I'm just not thrilled with the idea if it's frequent and year-round.

If you're uncomfortable driving quickly especially in the rain, that's fine. Everyone had different comfort levels. It does mean you should stay off roads where you are expected to drive quickly. I don't mean we shouldn't slow down a little when there is rain but 30mph in the left lane of 199 is dangerous. There are other ways to get anywhere in town that the speed limit isn't 60. I saw a little old lady in a Lexus almost get rear ended twice today.

Hi! I’m looking at visiting colonial Williamsburg from Richmond using Amtrak with my 1 year old.

The plan is to bring our stroller on the train and walk to the visitor center (about a 20 min walk~). I wanted to check that it’s safely walkable for someone with a kid in a stroller (I.e. sidewalks and crosswalks). I looked on Google and it *seems* like there’s a sidewalk all the way there but thought I’d check with the locals!

What is the big tent in front of the governor's palace?

I went for a walk last night at CW and saw a huge white tent set up in front of the governor's palace. I didn't see anything about an event (other than 2nd Sunday) happening this weekend. Any idea what it's for?

Virginia’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts, originally formed to assist farmers with erosion, are seeing a surge in interest from homeowners looking to protect their yards from stormwater damage.

The Colonial Soil and Water Conservation District, serving Williamsburg, James City and York counties, reported more than 140 site visits in 2025 alone as residents seek help through the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program.

However, VCAP's future funding is currently being debated in a Virginia General Assembly special session, with proposals ranging from a $2 million cut to a $4 million increase.

Hello Williamsburg, here from out of town. Looking for a THC/CBD pen/vape. I’ve tried a few gas stations and vape shops (where I’d typically get them back home). Any suggestions on where other than a dispensary. Thank you so much!
