Volunteer Roles

Hey everyone,

My family and I recently launched a Virginia-based environmental nonprofit called the Society for a Secure and Sustainable Water Future (S4SSWF), and we’re currently looking for volunteers who are interested in sustainability, environmental policy, media, outreach, nonprofit work, or water security.

Our work focuses heavily on rainwater harvesting, water sustainability, environmental education, and advocacy. Over the years, we’ve been involved in real-world rainwater harvesting implementation projects and advocacy efforts connected to Virginia legislation and public awareness initiatives surrounding sustainable water infrastructure. We are actually currently preparing for a project with GMU.

Right now we’re trying to build a strong volunteer network and are looking for self-motivated people who want to help us grow.

Some of the areas we’re recruiting for include:

  • Social media/content creation
  • Outreach and partnership building
  • Website development
  • Grant writing
  • Policy analysis/research
  • Nonprofit financial strategy

Most roles are flexible-hour and results-based. We understand people are busy, so we’re not micromanaging volunteers or expecting corporate-style schedules. We’re mainly looking for passionate people who care about sustainability and want to contribute where they can.

Volunteer hours can also be provided for students.

Examples of projects and goals:

  • Expanding rainwater harvesting awareness
  • Supporting sustainable water policy
  • Building educational media campaigns
  • Organizing partnerships and outreach
  • Supporting implementation projects
  • Advocating for better water resilience and conservation practices

Feel free to ask questions or message me if interested. Thanks everyone.

I’m really lucky to have full rides at both, so I’m not too worried about cost or grading culture. My main concern is that I’m not a traditional age student, and I don’t want to feel out of place or singled out. Which school do you think would feel more welcoming?

I know this may sound shallow but it will truly be my deciding factor. Honest opinions please!

Housing Questions (Spring Pathways)!

Hey all,

I think the title says most of it, but I just want to ask about transfer housing at William and Mary. I'll be doing the Spring Pathways (unless by some miracle I get off the waitlist), so I don't really know what housing is like for students who do that.

My questions are:

  1. Do Spring Pathways students get first-year housing? I know it's based on availability, but is there usually any open?
    1. If so, which dorms should I try to go for? I have a massive spreadsheet (from before I got waitlisted) when I was really excited and ranked, like, 40 individual dorm rooms I liked. My top choices of buildings were Lemon, Pine, Cedar, Chandler, and Poplar (in that order). Any thoughts on those? I know it's unlikely to get any, but I still have my hopes up.
  2. If Spring Pathways students get transfer housing... which halls are the best to live in, and which should I try to avoid? I would like to try to stay away from buildings that only have hall-style bathrooms. Ideally, I'd go for private bathrooms, suites, or single-use hall bathrooms, both due to religious modesty and worsening anorexia. (No, I'm not diagnosed - as a minor, I would rather die than have my parents find out. I'm aware that accommodations may be difficult without documentation.)
  3. Can Spring Pathways students apply for the language houses? I plan on going in as either a Government or French major and would love to live in the French House, which is - I believe - in Pine Hall. Is that available, or is there a separate process for that?
  4. Speaking of that, what do people think of the West Woods 2 village so far? Are there preferred buildings or not? My only worry is that they're a good bit away from the main campus, but I do like that they're near lots of the athletic facilities.

I know I can probably get a lot of this answered once I'm fully in the process, and I know I probably overshared a bit, but I don't want to go in feeling clueless. I'm way too excited about this school for my own good. Anyone is welcome to answer, but I would particularly appreciate Spring Pathways students themselves commenting on it!

Thanks,

PC Options for Business/Bio Dual Major

Hi, I'm the parent of an incoming freshman who plans to dual major in business and bio. The business school requires a Windows PC for some applications, but my child uses a Mac. Has anyone used Parallels Desktop, which allows you to run Windows on a Mac?

My main concerns are the ease of getting a Windows PC repaired if there is an issue, and the learning curve of fully switching to Windows. I did see that there is an authorized Apple repair shop near campus that will do repairs under the Apple Care warranty. My past experience with Windows PC repairs is that it usually requires you to mail the PC somewhere.

Hi, I just got accepted to W&M as a sophomore transfer for fall 2026! I'm struggling to make a decision about it.

I'm finishing first year at NYU, so I'm used to the city life and excitement of it but I felt it was hard to find a community that was centered around the school, and students were generally cold and very individual. I'm looking to go somewhere that has good school pride and where the people are friendly, kind, social. I'm definitely interested in joining a sorority and club tennis as well. I also really think I would enjoy the campus life at W&M, it is so beautiful there and I think one of the reasons I struggled at NYU was because there was no central place to be with just other students.

I think my hesitation to committing is worry that I will be bored coming to live in Williamsburg, and that academically I will not have as much opportunity to explore subfields in my major (Psychology). Additionally, that students will already have cemented friend groups and I will feel disconnected and behind from them.

W&M is less widely known than NYU as well, although I know it is prestigious too. However, I did get good financial aid for W&M so my cost per year would be 50k less than what I pay now for NYU which is crazy.

Any advice about student life at W&M/transferring would be appreciated!

W&M canvas site affected by cyberattack

So apparently most of the school uses Blackboard but my online MBA program uses canvas. We got an email from our student success coordinator saying there’s an outage and no expected restoration time… RIP to everyone with hw due tonight.

My undergrad used Canvas so I’m just getting updates from them but wanted to post in case someone else is also affected.

Looking at applications for next years, what are some majors that are not as popular or competitive? Also, how much does intended majors on common app affect admission?

hi I know this might be a dumb question but I was wondering how the dating scene Is for freshmen specifically for girls.
I know w&m is mostly girls so is it hard to find dates and stuff being the majority?

and If you were doing majors like psychology or neuroscience would it be hard to find anyone in classes or in clubs related to that since it’s a mostly female field (at least psyc is) or is it an split with both genders in most?

sorry If this question is dumb and sounds weird I wasn’t sure how to word it😭😭

why is finding a roommate so annoying. it’s either they don’t reply, they seem great and all of a sudden they ghost you, or they already have a roommate.
and the w&m roommate isn’t rlly random either its giving me suggested roommates and making me message ppl so the cycle repeats again
r we cooked

Hi there! I’m an incoming freshman at W&M and am trying to get an idea of what my schedule might look like next year. For context, I’m an oos student and cost is a factor for me

I want to double major in gov + data science and see that the intro data science course, DATA 101, can be replaced with CS 141, which I would receive credit for with my AP CSA score (very convoluted, I know). This would allow me to go straight into DATA 201 and save some money. However, this is a Java class, and I know data science is conducted primarily in python, so that’s why I’m a bit worried. DATA 101 would also have a stats emphasis that I’d be kinda missing w/o it. I want to be as economical as possible, but don’t want to miss any core learning yk?

For any current data science students, would you recommend I take DATA 101 or skip it with my cs credit and move straight into DATA 201? And for anyone who skipped the python intro course with csa credit, what’s the jump like from Java to python?

Any help with these questions would be much appreciated! I just wasn’t sure where to go to ask 😅

Hey,

I'm an incoming freshman at William and Mary and I'm trying to do the New Student Inventory from the Tribe Guide but it keeps saying "secure.vzorientation.com redirected you too many times."

Anyone else experiencing this and does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks,

Can anyone comment on Gen Chem 1 (Chem103) vs Advanced Freshman Chem (Chem 205) for a student who has a 5 on AP Chem exam? Better to just do Chem 103 to (hopefully) contribute to a strong GPA? How rigorous is Chem 205 in comparison?

Hi! I got in as a transfer and love William and Mary, but I have a few questions. Since I would be coming in as a junior, would most people be off campus in my grade and would this make it hard to make friends? Does the school feel too big or do you feel like it feels tight knit? Are people generally friendly and willing to make new friends, or not really?

My daughter will be an incoming freshman in March. Since her acceptance in March there's been zero correspondence from financial aid...ie 1) did she get any merit? and 2) what's the total all-in cost going to be?

Anyone else? At DFAS I heard mixed things...some heard immediately, some nothing.

Should I assume no merit if we havent heard anything? (Im expecting zero merit, but we can hope!)

Curious if others have heard anything.
