Hi there!
I bought this Urusei Yatsura animation cel of Lum and was wondering if anyone had any advice as to narrowing down which episode it might have been used in?
It has a cel code of C11, so there could definitely be other layers in front of/ behind her as well.
I'm not super familiar with the series, but I think it could be theoretically be from any of the original cel animated episodes/ movies/ OVAs. I'm not sure if maybe the art style could help identify which studio likely produced it (Pierrot vs. Deen)?
I'd appreciate any help further narrowing it down before I start skimming all the episodes! Thanks!

In Episode 35 of the OG anime (screenshot 1-3), you can clearly see that Lum didn't have makeup when she was a child. Of course, the same is true for the remake version of the story, which was Episode 15 of Season 1 (screenshot 4-8).
However, in Episode 53 (screenshot 9-11) and 101 (screenshot 12-13), which are bath-focused episodes, you can still see her with eyeshadow. This could just be an oversight from the anime staff, like when Sakura's lipstick disappeared and reappeared in different shots.
These types of continuity errors happen in anime to this day. Albeit this one is a bit more extreme, as it's for a whole episode. So Ig the anime team simply forgot about it. Unless you think she naturally got her eye shadow when she got older, like her horns.
This thing is even trickier in the manga. Although you can see Lum with various colors of eye shadows in the colored cover pages, in the actual black and white panels, it almost looks like she has none in pretty much everywhere. But I think since both adaptations showed Lum without makeup when she was a kid, I think it's safe to assume it's like that in the manga too. Especially since the remake went to great lengths to be as accurate to the source material as possible.
Pic 14 and 15 are from Chapter 59 in the manga, which is what Episode 35 of the OG and Episode 15 of the remake adapted. Pic 16 is the cover of Chapter 132, which is what Episode 53 of the OG anime adapted. Sorry that they're not in English. The site where I used to read UY in high quality was shut down not long ago.
Before anyone asks, this was a fun little thing to research about. And I liked revisiting the anime after a long time, even if it was briefly.
Maybe she has a preference but I always thought it was interesting
This screenshot is from Episode 10 Since Your Parting of Urusei Yatsura 2022. I thought it was pretty obvious Lum wears makeup. You can clearly see Lum without her eyeliner here. This proves that it is in fact makeup and not some weird alien biology.
I don't remember if you can actually see Lum without makeup in the original series or the manga. So I guess some people could argue that they're part of her body or something in those versions lol.
Ten is so cute floating around! It came out great!
I drew a Lum to practice a bit, I liked it so much that I'm now putting it on wplace

I know Lum isn't really involved in this. But imagine : aliens invade Earth, randomly choose you for a game of tag where the fate of the planet depends on the outcome. After that, the girl whose horns you caught (Lum) thinks you want to marry her because of a misunderstanding, which hastens the inevitable end of your relationship your girlfriend (Shinobu). And to top it all off, your circle of acquaintances is made up of people who are all more eccentric than the next, whether they're ordinary earthlings (Shinobu, Shutaro, Ryoko, Ryuunosuke, Tobimaro, Onsen Mark, Sakura, Cherry, etc) or extraterrestrials (Lum, Jariten, Rei, Ran, Bente, Oyuki, Kurama, etc). And all these people more or less hate you.
Would you have managed to grab Lum's horns ? Would you have had feelings for Lum in such a situation ? Would you have been able to tolerate all those crazy events and more or less deranged characters around you ?
So I've been going through a 90s power pop kick, and I've been digging into the Matthew Sweet discography. Very surprisingly, I watched his music video from 1991 for the song "I've Been Waiting" and it features a ton of footage from Urusei Yatsura! Turns out he was a huge fan and even has a Lum tattoo. You can also see some Lum art hanging on the wall in his music video for "Sick Of Myself" (which imo is an amazing song).
What makes this really interesting to me is that UY didn't even officially come to the US until 1992 with the AnimEigo dubs (at least to my little bit of research, please feel free to correct me here).
Anyways, thought I'd share because I thought it was really cool!
