Goodbye Bilresa

I tried. I really, really tried.

No network configuration problems. No competing thread networks. Avoided overlapping WiFi channels with the neighbours. 2.4Ghz WiFi is mostly unused in the house. All automations are local - no cloud. All automations on the Aqara M3, no 3rd party eco-systems anywhere in the house. I don't know if ZigBee channel numbers are the same as thread channels, but they are spaced apart. More mains powered thread devices than there are Bilresa switches. Switches have direct line of sight to nearest relay. Kajplats bulbs respond instantly to automations or taps on the phone app. IKEA beta firmware, then latest firmware. Complicated automation to avoid having to even *use* the switches. Tried Home Assistant.

Switches will lag for maybe 10 seconds sometimes. Not *every time*, but often. Several times a day. Maddening.

I have this Aqara M3 (I have their automated roller blinds) so tried an Aqara H1 wireless ZigBee double rocker switch. Even at discount it cost over 5x the price of a single Bilresa - more if you chose the multicolour 3 pack.

Works instantly. Click. Lights on. Click. Lights off. Click. Click. Click. It's pure bliss. Honestly. You can even screw it to the wall and the holes line up with existing UK or type 86 wall boxes.

I gritted my teeth and ordered another 2. I will get more when funds allow.

MYGGSPRAY 1.1.4 Firmware Released

MYGGSPRAY motion sensor has had 1.1.4 released today. Currently updating and not sure what this fixes apart from maybe stability and making the test firmware which was released a few days ago the stable release.

New BILRESA dual button 1.9.15 firmware

This is the first public update to the device and was certified days ago, it is not a test version.

It is already available in the main Matter DCL so platforms can fetch it. I had to use Home Assistant to update it since did not appear in SmartThings yet. Initial findings:

  • There are no release notes but consider it a "Stability improvement".
  • Matter version is now 1.4 and it's compliant with the specification (unlike the test version).
  • Battery reporting is still weird since it reports 45% for fully charged NiMH batteries whereas other devices like MYGGSPRAY or older Zigbee remotes would report 90%.
  • Multipress support is officially still limited to double press. Remember BILRESA scroll wheel supports triple press and extending the multipress would be "free". Meanwhile, if you use SmartThings, with my custom driver you can emulate the triple-tap, in fact it works better now that the button is compatible with Matter 1.4.

BILRESA for offline mode

Can the device be used offline? Can it be relied to work when the wifi cuts off?

DIRIGERA shows all lights as offline in Google Home

Hoping someone here has cracked this, because I'm out of ideas.

I've been running TRÅDFRI for years with zero issues controlling 40+ lights via Google Assistant. The only reason I upgraded to DIRIGERA is that IKEA's newer lights no longer support the old hub, so I had no choice.

Spent hours migrating everything. All lights work perfectly in the IKEA Home Smart app, I can control every single one without issues. The problem starts when I try to get it into Google Home.

What I've tried:

  • Generated a Matter Pairing code in the IKEA app (Settings > Home (hub) > Integrations) and paired it to Google Home
  • The DIRIGERA hub and all lights appear in Google Home, but every single device shows as offline (see screenshot)
  • Deleted the bridge in Google Home, regenerated the code, re-paired from scratch multiple times
  • Restarted the DIRIGERA hub (including a full factory reset and tried only a fraction of my lights again)
  • Restarted my router (Google Nest Wifi)
  • Waited 15+ minutes after pairing before touching anything
  • Made sure the DIRIGERA is on the same network as my phone

Setup:

  • IKEA DIRIGERA hub (latest firmware)
  • 40+ IKEA lights
  • Google Nest Wifi (2nd gen, no Thread support)
  • Google Home app

Has anyone gotten DIRIGERA working with Google Home on a non-Thread router? Is the DIRIGERA Hub enough, or do I actually need a Google device with Thread built in (like a Nest Hub 2nd gen) for this to work at all?

Any help appreciated.

TIMMERFLOTTE Woes

Thought I’d buy a few TIMMERFLOTTE temperature sensors to use around the house but I cannot, for the life of me get them to pair in the IKEA Smart iOS app. I’ve tried using iPhones/ iPads, rebooting the (updated with current firmware) Dirigera hub, resetting the sensors and plugging the batteries in immediately after restarting them, the whole shabang.

The app finds them without a problem and proceeds to attempt to add them but fails after a few minutes. I never use Apple Home but have also tried it that way and the same thing happens.

Both trying to add them using the QR code and Matter code also has no effect so now I’m at the point of returning these £5 terrors.

The Dirigera is the only smart hub in the house and the only other smart accessories we have are some light bulbs and light controllers.

If anyone has had success pairing them, I am all ears!

How I Finally Paired IKEA KAJPLATS Bulbs via Matter to DIRIGERA (After Everything Failed)

The Problem

I bought new IKEA KAJPLATS Matter bulbs algong with the DIRIGERA hub. I already had 6 KAJPLATS bulbs paired via Zigbee (a workaround I found), but I reset everything because Zigbee-only meant I couldn't combine remote control + app control the way I wanted. Only the newer Matter setup gives you both.

Symptoms:

  • Scanning the Matter QR in IKEA Home Smart app → bulb is announced → "Configuring..." → fails after 2–3 minutes.
  • Hub firmware fully up to date (2.934.5).
  • Hub backendConnected: true, all IKEA cloud endpoints reachable, Thread network healthy.
  • Same failure on iPhone 17 Pro and Android.
  • Even with the bulb 30 cm from the hub: same failure.

Why It Fails I think

In July 2025, IKEA pushed firmware 2.805.7 which closed the local Thread Border Router API (port 8081) and changed mDNS broadcast info. Result:

  • Dirigera is a Thread Border Router internally.
  • But iOS / Android no longer trust it as a usable BR for Matter commissioning.
  • Apple Home shows: "Thread Border Router Required."
  • IKEA's own app silently fails at the Thread connectivity check.

KAJPLATS in Matter mode also requires active cloud Device Attestation. Even with cloud working, the Thread BR trust issue kills commissioning.

The "official" fallback documented elsewhere is "flash the bulb 12× to fall back to Zigbee." That works, but you lose Matter benefits and sometimes the multi-app/remote combination.

The Working Solution: Apple Home as Commissioner, IKEA via Multi-Admin

Matter has a feature called multi-admin / multi-fabric: a single device can be commissioned into multiple ecosystems. Apple's commissioner does work (iPhone + Apple TV / HomePod / a smart TV with Thread BR provides a trusted path + Apple does its own attestation). Once the device is on Apple's fabric, you can generate a fresh pairing code and hand it off to the IKEA app.

Verified working: 2026-05-10, DIRIGERA FW 2.934.5, iPhone 17 Pro, KAJPLATS bulbs + BILRESA remotes + light strips.

Steps

  1. Install Apple Home app alongside IKEA Home Smart.

https://preview.redd.it/kjv0gzjnth0h1.jpg?width=540&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d1e14774ca43b33039ad576d5223c398cd6736d

  1. Factory-reset everything, each bulb, remote, light strip, and the DIRIGERA hub.
    1. EDIT: Or just start by resetting one bulb and test 🙂
  2. Add the DIRIGERA hub as a Bridge in Apple Home. (Scan QR on the Hub via Apple Home App)
  3. Add the DIRIGERA hub as the hub in IKEA Home Smart. (Follow instructions from IKEA Home Smart App)
  4. Pair each device in Apple Home first. Have the blub as close as possible to the hub, line of sight if possible.
  5. Skip any firmware updates Apple Home suggests
  6. In Apple Home, for each device: tap the device → Settings"Turn On Pairing Mode"copy the Matter code.
  7. Switch to the IKEA Home Smart app: Add ProductMatter QR scan"Enter code instead" → paste the code → confirm.
  8. You'll get a notification from Apple Home: "This accessory was added to another Home", that's the multi-admin handoff confirmation.
  9. Repeat for each device.

Result

  • Bulbs, remotes, light strips all visible and controllable in both apps.
  • IKEA hardware remotes still work (this was the whole point, Zigbee-only setup didn't allow this combination).
  • No need to buy a Thread Border Router.
  • No need to fall back to Zigbee.

IKEA Home Smart, Wohnzimmer with KAJPLATS bulbs and BILRESA remote paired via Matter

Things I Tried That Did NOT Work

  • Direct IKEA Matter pairing (multiple times, multiple firmwares, multiple distances)
  • Resetting the Thread network on the hub
  • Switching the router from WPA3-SAE to WPA3-SAE/WPA2-PSK mixed
  • Setting 2.4 GHz to 20 MHz bandwidth (good idea anyway, didn't fix it)
  • Using 2.4 GHz didn't make a difference, my solution worked also with 5 GHz
  • Pairing through Google Home with DIRIGERA (DIRIGERA isn't supported as a Matter Bridge by Google)
  • Trying via Android IKEA app (same Thread BR trust issue)

Router Settings Verified Innocent

For anyone suspecting a router config issue, I checked all the usual suspects on my Zyxel EE5301-00:

Setting State
IPv6 LAN ✓ enabled
IPv6 WAN ✓ enabled (MLD Proxy = Y)
IGMP Proxy ✓ enabled
Multicast Forwarding (Wi-Fi) ✓ ON
AP Isolation main SSID ✗ off (good)
Band Steering (MPro Mesh) ✗ off (good)
2.4 GHz channel/bandwidth Channel 1 / 20 MHz
Firewall Medium (no intra-LAN block)

Everything was already correct. The router is not the problem.

Kajplats E14 bulb via Hue Bridge

I recently ordered some Matter Kajplats E14 smart bulbs but unfortunately one of them refuses to turn on/off.

After putting both bulbs in pairing mode and connecting them to my Hue Essentials app (using touchlink) via my Hue Bridge, I was able to control colour, hue and temperature of the bulbs, but only one of them will turn on/off.

The most common answer online seems to be the need for a firmware update on the unresponsive bulb, but without the Dirigera hub, updating the firmware seems almost impossible.

Any pointers?

Hi Reddit,

TL;DR: The new Kajplats bulbs are much more yellow, with weird peaks in the LEDs spectra, compared to the old white Trådfri bulbs.

-

I'm not very happy with the color of the new IKEA white color, the Kajplats 1521 lm for my hallway. I've had Trafri ones in my house for years and thought the color was fine- but these are too....yellow and just look off to me. I'm repainting a wall a nice dark blue and the difference between how the old/new lights illuminate this color is striking, but I couldn't really explain why.

Next to this, since I got the new home hub last fall I noticed that my old Trafri bulbs also don't actually change between cool white colors.

This all was based on a feeling, so I borrowed my work's spectrometer + integrating sphere to measure the output color from each bulb type I had:

Trådfri bulb E27 WS globe opal 1055lm "Old bulb" led2003g10
Kajplats E27 WS globe 1521 "New Bulb" led2408g10
Trådfri E27 CWS 806lm (full color) led1924g9

I did these measurements on the latest FW version on 2026-01-29 for all bulbs and the ikea dirigera home hub. I controlled it from the IKEA home app to change color, and sometimes dimming status when needed.

The plots below show the intensity of light at every wavelength. I put a rainbow color bar below the plots to help identify the peaks. To collect this data, I borrowed an Avantes spectrometer + integrating sphere for this work, also running the latest firmware and did a background-subtraction and integration time calibration before each measurement to keep a good S/N. The bulb was about 1m from the 1cm diameter circular aperture of the integrating sphere. So- NOTICE that the y-axis/measurements below are not calibrated for the output of the full bulb! They can be compared between color changes, and between bulbs (since I used the same setup) but this does not represent the full luminosity output integrated over all output directions.

Here's what I learned:

  1. my old Trådfri bulbs do not change at all from cool colors 1-4 (C1 - C4) .

https://preview.redd.it/ltkf90kutvyg1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=bb6de423334b9b44ead25c84918b12894a1c7944

This spectrum can be broken down into its two LED components. Notice how nice and smooth these spectra are- this roughly approximates the curves we expect to see in a blackbody radiation light source.

https://preview.redd.it/7lvktlncuvyg1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=e3688847e2f0b5d56b3cbe8d5f5c71ad7d502c4b

For the Real Nerds among us, here are the spectral weights for all the colors. Obviously, the weights do not change between the first four spectra

Weighted component an

  1. The new Kajplats bulb does change for all 8 different white colors, and is very peaky in its spectrum for longer (redder) wavelengths.

Peaky behavior or the newer white bulb

Again, we see that the spectrum can be decomposed into to LEDs, one that is peaky and one that is smoother. This bulb was a bit harder to isolate into to individual spectra- but I think it also is represented well enough by 2 component LEDs:

Two components of the new white bulb type. There are some echos of the peaks in component 1 which I don't expect for a perfect analysis, but this is reddit, not my day job.

In the component tables we indeed see a nice handoff between the two LEDs.

https://preview.redd.it/5p54hqjpwvyg1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b604800f3dba8124450fe76ab6c4f9f62ca1793

Conclusions white bulbs:

  • Im not crazy: there isn't any color difference for the first few cool colors of the old bulbs anymore. Likely done for color matching to the new bulbs :(
  • The new bulbs are VERY peaky. So- while the Total integrated spectral power emitted from these bulbs may match some CRI criteria, they are terribly heavily weighted around orange/red illumination.
    • This peakiness can change how the old/new bulbs illuminate objects in non-intuitive ways. If you have an object that reflects light exactly on one of the peaks it will seem significantly brighter than something just-off the peak next to it. This was not a problem with the smoother spectrum of the old Tradfri bulbs.
    • Also, there's the brain's color-weighting factor:
      • The new bulb has a lot more total light in the 550 - 650nm (green-red) region relative to the old bulb for the warmer white colors (C8).
      • the blue region (450nm) is about the same between the two bulbs for the two C8 measurements

The ratio of red-green region / blue region is very different between the two bulbs for the warmest tone. This would make the new bulbs appear much more yellow than the old bulbs (since yellow is the absence of blue) and is likely why the new bulbs make my blue wall look black/colorless.

https://preview.redd.it/pvsu3azmyvyg1.png?width=1194&format=png&auto=webp&s=d51bbb9c29d13e9fa7c2ec0fa509683ca1da8120

  • Measuring the coolest and warmest colors for each bulb at a few different app intensity values, we can see the dimming curve of the different bulbs/colors. The app seems to calibrate the new bulbs against the old bulb outputs, which means that you only really see the extra output of the much brighter new bulb in the last 25% of its brightness range.

you only get extra brightness from the new LED bulb in the last 25% of the dimming settings.

That's it for the white lights. let me know if you see more signals in the comments :)

Bonus: Tradfri Color Bulb

I did the same component analysis on the old tradfri color bulb.

Note, I did physically have the full color Kajplats when measuring but I couldn't get it to pair for MONTHS. It is sadly excluded from this dataset. I had tried the IKEA app, Apple home hub, home assistant, many resets, remote pairing, returning it for a new one, and still not getting it to work. It now works after a thread issue was fixed in FW.

First all the spectra. The color of the line is the color I extracted from the IKEA app and had selected when measuring.

its a hot mess

These spectra could best be broken down into four component LEDs

Principle component analysis, showing that 3 LEDs wasn't enough to fit all the color spectra, but

spectra of the components I extracted, im a little suspicious of 3/4 but its probably fine because it looks like that's C13/C14.

https://preview.redd.it/wiez978l2wyg1.png?width=1790&format=png&auto=webp&s=566e97cfdf2db2bb49baf20bc9c318d090b8c45a

Do with that what you want.

Will this fix the lost connection issues? I have regular problems with a lot of the new IKEA devices, they are losing connection. In the past weeks only one KLIPPBOK was unavailable in HA and Apple Home.. will try the new FW..

My local ikea recently stocked the new smart plugs Grillsplats. Since the price is amazing I am looking into expanding my current setup with these new plugs.

However due to lack of Thread border routers in my current setup I am also thinking about getting Dirigera as a Thread Border Router. and I have few questions.

  1. Can dirigera Hub be set to Radio only mode? Since I will be using HA as the "brains", all i need from dirigera hub is Matter over thread connectivity. I also looked into Home assistant connect ZBT-2 and it basically cost the same or more than Dirigera at least in my region.

  2. Is IKEA App mandatory for dirigera operation? Can i ditch the app once setup is done? I would really prefer to not add another app to control the system

  3. Can the matter devices from IKEA be firmware updated with HA without using the app? TPlink devices require tp link app to update the firmware so i was wondering if the ikea ones are the same or not

  4. How local can Dirigera be? Can i run it in isolated network without internet? If Ikea system does not mind being run without internet, I can just create a seperate environment for ikea stuff and use the app if all else fails. I do not really need remote access since I am home bound most of the time anyways.

I was running Home Assistant with another system in my last some. Since moving, the only smart things are now my LG CX TV and a couple of self made ESP32 devices, so I can ”choose ecosystem” right now.

I’ve read about network problems and devices dropping the connection, but what is the state of the ”new” devices (I guess Matter over Thread)? If I buy smart bulbs, electric plugs, light switches and motion sensor, and want to integrate it all with Home Assistant, will it be stable for everyday use now?

The use of TIMMERFLOTTE with the IKEA app?

I got myself a TIMMERFLOTTE temperature sensor because I thought I’d be able to use it for automations in the IKEA Home Smart app, but apparently I can’t. So what can I use the sensor for in the IKEA app besides displaying the temperature and humidity?

Kajplats GU10 bulbs are frosted - What tool do you use to install / remove them from the physical socket?

So we just bought six of these. Put them in a very tricky fixture that has a deep housing. Because these are frosted the suction cup piece doesn't grip the bulb. Once I put them in they detected in the app, but it wants me to scan the QR code to add the bulbs... well that code is obviously covered by the fixture, so we need to remove them now to get to the QR code. What tool exists to actually install / remove these bulbs?

edit I am an idiot. There are barcodes printed on the manual

Edit2 although if someone has an answer on a tool that's also helpful since one day these lights will burn out and need to be replaced... oh.... no.... please let that day never come...

Leaving this up so others can learn from my stupid :)

I have ~2 dozen KLIPPBOK water sensors deployed since last November or so, right after they became available here in the U.S.

Apple HomeKit only, no IKEA hub.

I have had the "don't show connected" problem since deployment. They work if you wet a finger and put it across the contacts, and I get a HomeKit notification on my phone and iPad.

So I was glad to see yesterday a couple notices of Klippbok firmware updates, hoping it would solve this problem.

On digging around in the updates section of Apple Home, I see lots of requests for updates, and then a spinny circle. It seems to me it is very slow getting updates from the IKEA update server.

Or is this an Apple Home problem?

A penny for your thoughts.

FWIW, I am currently showing in Home:

3 Klippbok having requested the update yesterday (!).

11 having updated to 1.0.13 yesterday.

10 that updated to 1.0.11 in Nov. of 2025.

Hey all,

Recently grabbed 1 ALPSTUGA and 3 GRILLPLATS.

Using home assistant companion app with a SLZB-MR3U has the OTBR.

Once I got the app configured correctly scanning the barcodes on 3 of 4 worked fine. For the life of me trying to get this last GRILLPLATS to pair just isnt working.

Ive reset everything and tried everything I can think of, just not sure why this one is being so stubborn, its beaconing as smart things on my s22 has seen it but when i try pair it always fails and cant find device...

Anyone else have experience with some not working and is worth returning for another?

Cheers

Dear trådfri team. After switching to Dirigera I was very disappointed with your choice of blocking of non-google Android variants.

In the reviews you frame it like this:

>For security reasons, our app is designed to run only on devices with official Google Play Services and a locked bootloader. It does not support rooted devices or custom operating systems like GrapheneOS. We apologize for the inconvenience. /IKEA Home smart

I want to blunt: this is theater.

You are effectively:

  • stricter than my banking apps
  • force me to use an old phone for Ikea only that hasn't seen patches for years
  • force others to use Google infrastructure when there is no reason
  • ignore other, secure ways of device attestation (see: here )

Please, you are not providing fort knox. You are providing a glorified circuit breaker. I implore you to either relax your nonsensical strit rules or at least support the ever growing community of Grapheneos and support their device attestation as well.
