Emil Hirsh introduced our showing of Speep Racer yesterday. He was wearing a Speed Racer helmet and jacket. He basically thanked the audience for coming and said how happy he was that they are re-releasing the movie and that he doesn’t want to live in a world where people don’t like Speed Racer. He then joined the audience in seats near the front and the movie started
When I heard the re-release was happening I instantly thought about that pass I had from the midnight release 18 years ago. I thought I had thrown it in the trash but here it is. I can remember the theater being sold out but nobody in the theater was into the movie.

For this piece I focused on scene assembly, lighting, shading, and lookdev in Blender, plus texture editing to bring the modern MC86 livery up to date. The goal was to blend classic Speed Racer influences with contemporary GT race graphics in a clean poster-style layout.

I'm sure this is common knowledge, but I just saw someone in Twitter say that speed's og voice actor is in the movie so I looked it up. Peter Fernandez was one of the radio announcers. Such a cool Easter egg. I'm very happy that this movie is seeing some sort of resurgence with the imax release even though I'm not able to go. What a great film.
The last time I saw it in theaters was in 2008 on opening weekend with my family. My dad watched speed racer as a kid back in his country (they called it Meteoro) and then he bought some VHS’s and showed my sister and I. I fell in love with the show and I was genuinely one of the only ones in my friend group who loved the movie. Now here we are, 18 years later, im watching it in the same theater that I saw it in all those years ago with my partner who loves this movie as much as I do! I wore my 90’s thrifted shirt and they also used the original poster for our theaters showing! So cool!!
don’t think i’d be able to watch the imax release because i had work/class the 20th and the theater is an hour away, but thankfully there’s some extra showings going on! i happened to be off friday so now i’m going to go see the movie, and for fairly cheap too. less than $11 ain’t half bad, so looking forward to this experience.
Good news they extended it until 4/30 they’ll have a showing each night!!
Well I FINALLY achieved my lifelong goal of seeing my favorite film of all-time in theaters in IMAX. To quote Mom Racer: "it's beautiful, and inspiring, and everything that art should be." I had a big ol' dumb grin on my face the entire time and tears of joy for a majority of it. Practically empty theater since I chose the latest possible showing, so it was like I had my own private screening.
My ONLY issue with it being in IMAX was the fact they cropped it to fill up (almost) the entire screen. It was still framed well for the most part but at certain points the scenes just felt cramped and I literally had turn my entire head to look at whoever was talking on screen (felt like I was watching a tennis match sometimes lmao). I would've been fine with them letterboxing it to retain the entire frame in its original aspect ratio but I understand why they did it. Aside from that minor issue, I had a freaking BLAST!
Also...WHY DIDN'T AMC HAVE MINI TAKE-HOME POSTERS?? WHERE ARE THE EXCLUSIVE POPCORN BUCKETS??? Let's hope they do it for the 20th anniversary 2 years from now🙏😭

It's always been my favorite movie, but last night I finally got to see it in theaters and no one could wipe the smile from my face. The movie still hits hard 18 years later and even had tears in my eyes multiple times throughout the film. Still have hope we can get a sequel or reboot soon, especially with the newfound love and hype from everyone else
I loved this movie as a kid and still love it to this day. I watched it today as an adult and I understood the movie so much better than my kid self ever did. The story, the passion for racing, and the visuals were great! I’m surprised that for a PG movie they could get away with some swearing and that torturing scene. Iron man movie ruined this movie’s box office ratings at the time imo
What a masterpiece to see in IMAX!! Never would I have imagined this would’ve made it back into theaters, let alone IMAX!
I remember when this movie first came out in 2008. I wish I was able to see it as a kid in theaters but never got the chance to. I knew that I was never going to be able to see it in theaters again, especially with the criticisms when it first came out. So, I waited for it to appear on cable to see when and where to watch it each time. I even had the bed sheets of the Grand Prix, the toy Mach 6 that opened/lit up, and of course the DVD.
Now 18 years later (and as an adult), having that wish as a kid has finally came true. This feels like a special gift for my younger self and I owe it to him.
Now, if they do a 20th anniversary re-release (they better), I will see y’all here again!

This movie left a huge impact on my life and I can't thank it enough. Been waiting to see it in theaters again since 2008 and all my life people told me it's bad and yet here we are. Thank you, Wachowskis 💙❤️
Have seen the film a few of times at home, but seeing it in theater for the first time was an absolute joy ride with the vibrant colors and especially with IMAX's deep bass and loud volume sound intensifying the races.
It's uncommon for my local theater to be packed or applause a film at the end. Well, Speed Racer actually done it.
I can see this film being a fit for Dolby cinema for the vibrant visual and sound, and 4DX for the intense races. Hope future releases in these formats, maybe on 20th anniversary which is coming in 2 years.
