Hi all, incoming grad student. Managed to get approved for a room with Providence Living and wanted to see if anyone has had good or bad experiences with them, especially if you’ve rented one of their rooms with a shared house.

I was about to sign the lease but saw the reviews online and am now very hesitant to. A lot of the reviews are a few years older now and wanted to see if that might still be the overarching consensus on the company and if I should keep looking.

Thank you!

Help choosing between Amherst and RISD

Class of 2030 here, I was accepted into Amherst College RD and committed there before May 1st, but I just got off the RISD waitlist, and now I’m not sure where to go.

I’m pretty serious about visual art, so RISD would train me better and probably network for career opportunities better, but I also like other humanities stuff like History and English, or culture and linguistics. In that sense Amherst would definitely be more well rounded, and probably let me explore more.

My main conflict is that I’m not sure if that would narrow my path too early. I can’t really imagine what other career I would do, but maybe I just haven’t experimented with enough other stuff, so it might be too early to decide. But then if I go to Amherst I might regret passing up all the art opportunities.

I really do like both schools but depending on where I go it could really change my trajectory. Thoughts?

Work-arounds for not getting into a major as a transfer student due to no space availability??

I recently applied as a transfer student to RISD as a textile design major, but was “rejected” because the program no longer has space available for transfer students after the first-years chose their degrees. Honestly, RISD is my absolute dream school, and for what I want to achieve, it’s the school that has it all. I visited with my mom from California just to see the campus, and genuinely felt at home. Are there any workarounds to get into the school?? Someone from the admissions department said that transfer applications are no longer being considered, but it seems really unfair that my application wasn’t even looked at (they even refunded the application fee).

I imagine most students have MacBooks, but would love to hear current student recommendations. Not very familiar with Apple products tbh.

(I plan to major in Illustration and want to do game design/concept illustration if that matters.)

Hello everyone! I'm an upcoming freshman at Brown university and I've always wanted to take a visual arts class but have never been able to because they don't really exist where I'm from. I have a great interest in drawing although I can't say I'm very skilled. Regardless, I really want to improve and be able to express my creativity. I recently learned that Brown students can cross-register for classes at RISD—I know you guys are almost all insanely talented so it sounds very intimidating, but I considered taking the risk of registering for "Drawing I" with professor Victoria Roth. I'd love to know how "beginner"-friendly it is, apparently it's a requirement for all painting majors so I assume a lot of people have taken it in the past. Any help would be appreciated! I'd love to know how intensive the class is, how it works and what you learn throughout the course of a semester ; ))

P.S: I'm not really sure how registration works? I assume you need to have a portfolio to be accepted into the class, but I'm really not sure as I haven't found any info on this. It would probably be very hard to get in so this is all hypothetical ahah.

Hello! I am a highschool freshman and my dream school has been RISD ever since I got serious about art. However, I'm also very interested in language learning. Does RISD offer Korean or Japanese language programs? On campus or off, curious!

Questions about Cross-Registering with Brown

Hello! I’m seeking help regarding what is possible while at RISD.

I just got the acceptance in the student portal a few hours ago (I was waitlisted for a while), and I only have like a week before the deposit date.

I was wondering if it was possible to take premed classes at Brown while at RISD. I’m not looking to double-major or anything, I just want to know if it is possible to complete premed requirements. I’m kinda panicking right now because of the amount of time I have to make this decision.

I will also add that I was planning on attending Umich, in fact it was my first choice (I never thought I was gonna make it into RISD lol). I know that premed and art is very possible at Umich, I just don’t know what it would look like at RISD.

Advice from anyone who has done this is appreciate.

Hi! I was rejected from RISD, but right before the submission deadline I was having issues with portfolio. My portal said that my incomplete portfolio from January was “submitted” before I had the chance to finish it in March. I called an admissions officer and she assured me it would be fine, but she did not confirm that they actually received the portfolio I intended them to.

Obviously life goes on and I probably couldn’t afford what they would ask me to pay (low-income, would’ve needed full tuition)💀 but I do want to make sure I was rejected based on my actual application and not because it was submitted preemptively without my consent.
