Up Dharma Down - a masterful Filipino/Tagalog lyricist

When I come to think of an OPM band that effectively and CORRECTLY (ehem Dionela, char no hate) uses Filipino language, its intricacies, metaphor and construction, I always end up with Up Dharma Down.

Napakagaling nila for me gumawa ng lyrics that uses the language.

I always use Indak and Unti-Unti as an example.

Indak has this very Filipino concept of a dance. Indak/Sayaw/Indayog. UDD uses it as a metaphor for uncertainty and ambiguity in early stage of relationship (or in general). Masterful use of music and story telling din. Pag pinakinggan mo, para siyang tumitibok at sumisinok (?) na narrator hahahha does that make sense? Idk.

And of course, Unti-Unti has one of my favorite Filipino song quote ("Ang tanong na walang sagot, luhang nadudulot....").

They are this perfect example of a lyricist that "show and doesnt tell". I acknowledge that different bands/songwriters have their own styles but ang appeciating this kinds of bands and writer/s lang din.

What do y'all think of UDD and who in the OPM history has this magic din?

Considered ba as one album wonder ang Hale?

Self-titled Album' Tracklist

"Take No" (3:56)

"Broken Sonnet" (5:07)

"Blue Sky" (4:46)

"The Day You Said Goodnight" (4:51)

"Wishing" (4:47)

"Here Tonight" (5:51)

"Kahit Pa" (3:56)

"Life Support" (4:34)

"Underneath the Waves" (4:41)

"Runaway" (4:27)

"Bent Down" (4:04)

"Kung Wala Ka" (4:02)

I always wonder that their biggest songs/hits are from their first album. Is it fair to say na one album wonder sila? or is it because sobrang masterful lang nung debut album kaya ang hirap na pantayan.

The day you said goodnight, blue sky, kahit pa, broken sonnet and kung wala ka are their biggest hits and lahat nasa first album. Btw, Here Tonight is an underrated song from this album ang galing din pala kumanta nung lead guitar player nila.

Most underrated member of IVOS. Most of their viral songs are written by him.

When I think of song writers of IVOS it’s always Unique and Zild. Until I realized that most viral songs of IVOS are written by Blaster.

Kabisado

Come Inside of My Heart

Dulo ng Hangganan

Captivated

I Ain’t Perfect

Not to mention his solo works are fire.

Zild and Ma/0i ??

Una sa lahat sana maheal yung inner child nung mga fb page admins na kung ano ano pinag sasabi sa IVOS without even looking at the numbers. (Verbally ab-vsed siguro kayo ng mga magulang niyo or most probably pinabayaan kayo ng maaga kaya ganyan kayo kalala mang bad mouth haha! “To know one is to be one” LOL)

People are way too quick to throw around serious terms like “grooming” without actually understanding what they mean.

Nung time na linked si zild kay Shane Dandan, he was 17 and she was 15. That’s a 2-year gap both minors. How is that automatically grooming? Since when did a small age difference between teenagers become something criminal?

Ngayon naman with Mal0i. Zild is 28, Maloi is almost 24. Fully grown adults. Yet people keep pushing this narrative na “kaka-graduate lang ng SHS” as if time hasn’t passed. That was years ago. People grow up, situations change. Hindi pwedeng naka-freeze kayo sa outdated info just to fit a narrative. Clout chasers nyahaha

It feels like some people just want to use heavy terms for clout without actually assessing context.

At this point, it’s less about concern and more about feeding egos jumping on issues para lang may mapag-usapan.

I need the artist and lyrics po sa lyrics na to.

"japayuki ka na daw ngayon o kay bilis tumakbo ng panahon"

Parang typical OPM song na Indie.

This song has been lingering in my.mind for a decade or two na.

P-POP is growing fast and showing global potential. What do you think?

I’ve been thinking about this lately, and honestly, parang hindi na lang “emerging” yung P-POP. It really feels like it’s starting to establish itself as a strong and competitive genre within OPM.

I used to be a casual listener lang before, checking out a few songs here and there. But recently, ang daming ganap that made me stop and really pay attention.

For example, BINI did an amazing job at Coachella. That was such a big moment, not just for them but for P-POP and OPM in general. Then you have SB19 set to represent again on global stages like Lollapalooza and Summer Sonic. All of these are major platforms with huge international audiences.

And then just last night, during SB19’s concert, we got a glimpse of what’s coming next. XONARA, the first girl group from 1Z Entertainment, performed their pre-debut stage and ang galing. You can already tell they’re well-trained and performance-ready. Hindi sila mukhang baguhan at all. They even wrote and composed the song themselves. I wasn’t expecting to be that impressed, but they definitely gained a new fan in me.

What I like about it is that these groups aren’t just following trends. They’re building something that still feels Filipino while being globally competitive.

As a Filipino, nakaka-proud makita na our homegrown talent can stand on international stages and actually deliver. Maybe it’s still early to say how far P-POP will go globally, especially since a few groups pa lang are getting those big opportunities, but it definitely feels like we’re heading in that direction.

And if groups like XONARA are any indication, ang daming pwedeng abangan.

Curious to hear your thoughts. Do you think P-POP can break into the global mainstream, or are we still in the early stages?

First Time Ko Mapanood ng Live Si Johnoy Danao
