Up Dharma Down - a masterful Filipino/Tagalog lyricist
When I come to think of an OPM band that effectively and CORRECTLY (ehem Dionela, char no hate) uses Filipino language, its intricacies, metaphor and construction, I always end up with Up Dharma Down.
Napakagaling nila for me gumawa ng lyrics that uses the language. Vivid, hindi corny, at kung medyo geek ka, napakasarap sa tenga ng rhyming.
I always use Indak and Unti-Unti as an example.
Indak has this very Filipino concept of a dance. Indak/Sayaw/Indayog. UDD uses it as a metaphor for uncertainty and ambiguity in early stage of relationship (or in general). Masterful use of music and story telling din. Pag pinakinggan mo, para siyang tumitibok at sumisinok (?) na narrator hahahha does that make sense? Idk. Sa tula, may rhythm na tinatawag, pero ung Indak pag pinakinggan mo ineembody niya yung rhythm na siyang content at instrumental metaphor din ng kanta.
And of course, Unti-Unti has one of my favorite Filipino song quote ("Ang tanong na walang sagot, luhang nadudulot....").
They are this perfect example of a lyricist that "show and doesnt tell". I acknowledge that different bands/songwriters have their own styles but ang appeciating this kinds of bands and writer/s lang din.
What do y'all think of UDD and who in the OPM history has this magic din?
