Moving Near Montgomery

Hello! I recently got a job in Montgomery and I was looking for a house/apartment to rent so I can move in and settle. I am from Louisiana and I never been to Alabama, only to Birmingham to visit a friend, after doing some research people have claimed that Montgomery isn't a safe area to live in and it's best to move somewhere east of Montgomery.

From what I gathered: Pine Level, Blue Ridge, Pike Road, Prattville, and Millbrook are considered safe options to live in. Can anyone give me some insights about these if they are safe or which city would be better to live in? I gotten mixed signals from people claiming one city is safe than seeing another so I am unsure, it be great to hear actually opinions from others!

Thanks for anyone who willing to respond!

Alabama lawmakers will convene Monday afternoon for an astonishing eleventh-hour special session to prepare the state to use a gerrymandered map that dilutes the power of Black voters.
It’s part of a sweeping bid to give Republicans an advantage in the 2026 midterm elections.
The rapid-fire redistricting session would be unprecedented on its own. But just hours before the session was set to convene, Secretary of State Wes Allen (R) announced that Alabama would also move ahead with its May 19 primary election using the old map while it waits for two court decisions affecting voting districts.
That approach — which might require annulling the first vote and holding a second — will likely create confusion for many voters. It comes after President Donald Trump urged GOP officials in Southern states to follow a plan along those lines, adding: “If they have to vote twice, so be it.”
The stunning sequence of events underscores the contempt with which Republican officials have treated the democratic process as they scramble to take advantage of last week’s Supreme Court ruling allowing them to scrap majority-Black districts.
The hurried special session, called by Gov. Kay Ivey (R), comes on the heels of Wednesday’s U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) decision gutting the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Depending on what the legislature decides, Alabama could select a past map that the courts have already found to be a racial gerrymander and that eliminates one of the state’s two Black-majority, Democratic-held districts. Or, it could choose a new, even more gerrymandered one that eliminates both.
Alabama is one of three states — along with Louisiana and Tennessee — now racing to change maps after the SCOTUS ruling. Regardless of how exactly the states gerrymander, the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais means minority voters will face far steeper hurdles to proving that an electoral map unconstitutionally dilutes their voting power, a dangerous blow to decades of progress in minority political representation.
Legal hurdles

Despite holding the special session, Alabama lawmakers cannot yet take the step of enacting different maps because of ongoing litigation. In fact, the state is still bound by a court-ordered agreement to use its current remedial congressional map until 2030.
But in the wake of the Callais ruling, state officials rushed to filerequests asking the courts to allow Alabama to change maps for this year’s elections. One option is to revert to the 6-1 congressional map the state implemented before the court-ordered agreement. The other is to draw a new map in which all seven districts will likely be Republican, eliminating the state’s two majority Black districts.

Foreign Service family relocating to Montgomery this summer. Confused on housing/schools, any advice?

Hi folks!

I'm an EFM (I'm from Denmark, American wife) and we've recently received notice of assignment to Maxwell, Montgomery. We expect to arrive mid-July, aiming for housing either on base or in Old Cloverdale.

We are currently abroad (US Foreign Service assignment) and are experiencing some challenges in making this a smooth transfer. We would love some input on how others made a successful move. Our challenges are:

  1. As we only recently received the notice, it seems we missed most if not all of the school deadlines for our 7YO.
  2. Same goes for preschool for our 2YO.
  3. On the other hand, it seems that when we reach out property management we're too early. It seems they're not too keen on committing a vacant apartment to a mid-July arrival, which is of course is annoying from our perspective, but also understandable.

So, it seems we're "too late" but also "too early"! We've done plenty of internet searches, consulted our AI, posted to Facebook groups...

How did others in a similar situation solve this? Please help this Scandinavian understand how to crack the code 😀 Truly, we would be very thankful for any hints or ideas.

Thank you!

City of Montgomery Adopts New Official City Flag

The Montgomery City Council has approved a new official flag for the City of Montgomery during the May 5, 2026 council meeting. The flag has remained unchanged since 1952. The new flag will officially take effect on October 1, 2026.

The Process
The effort to redesign the flag was led by the City Council’s Governmental Affairs & Administration Standing Committee, which launched a public contest inviting residents and designers to submit concepts representing Montgomery’s identity, history, and future. The committee received 27 submissions, with 10 designs meeting the contest guidelines. Five semifinalists were selected for further review before the committee ultimately chose a design submitted by Joshua Gordon, with several modifications incorporated into the final version.

The Meaning
The newly adopted flag features several symbolic elements intended to reflect Montgomery’s heritage, leadership, and continued progress:
Red diagonal bands symbolizing momentum, movement, and the city’s evolving story.
A blue ceremonial ribbon stretching across the flag, representing renewal, unity, and new beginnings.
Nine old gold stars honoring Montgomery’s nine City Council districts.
A central outlined star symbolizing Montgomery’s role as Alabama’s capital city and serving as a beacon of unity and leadership.
Olive branches above and below the central star representing peace, resilience, growth, and goodwill among Montgomery’s citizens.

Next Steps
The newly adopted design will replace all existing official City of Montgomery flags beginning October 1, 2026.
The approved design proof accompanying the resolution includes the finalized layout and color scheme selected through the public review and committee process.

Trying to find rental in Montgomery

Hello! I got a job offer in Montgomery and am trying to find a safe and quiet neighborhood to stay. My budget is 1k to 1.2k for two bedroom and the east side of town is out of my budget after the additional fee. Some rentals on Narrow Lane Road and Woodley Road seem to be cheaper. Does anyone know if those areas are safe? Or know any good rentals that are within my budget in a good neighborhood?

As the title states, my sister and her toddler son just left a DV situation and are in a half way house in Montgomery. We are from Birmingham area and are unfamiliar with this area.

I am reaching out in hopes that someone can direct me to resources for them.
She is now set up on foodstamps so they have a little food. We paid her entrance fee and first week rent. Also got her a few toiletries/necessities.

But he needs more clothes, she could use some too tbh. And money. She’s a couple months behind on her car and has no car insurance. She needs a job like YESTERDAY.
She is a felon.
She has fast food & convenience store experience. Super good person and hard worker. She was recently the assistant manager of the food portion of 2 circle k’s in Pelham and Bessemer. Domestic violence and chaos caused her to leave that job back in Jan.

Any leads are greatly appreciated.

I’m considering a move to Montgomery this year, but one thing holding me back is my lack of familiarity with local landlords. Surprisingly, I like my current landlord in Bham a lot, and I’m reluctant to move unless I can find another good one.

I’ve seen so many posts about places to avoid, but who are the legitimately good, honest landlords who do repairs quickly and efficiently in Montgomery? Is there an apartment building that’s really great to live in?

Long story short, my husband has a storage unit in Montgomery and we live in Nashville. I’m looking for a company to load a moving truck and drive it to Nashville and unload it.

Long story, not as short.

My husband moved away from his hometown a while back, like a while a while. He left a storage unit in Montgomery and hasn’t had the opportunity/space for the items until we got married last summer. Sadly, we haven’t had the chance to go down and clean it out and I’d really like him to have his stuff in our home. He’s held on to it for this long; it means a lot to him.

Goal: I send his parents a key to the unit. A reputable company, or individual with insurance, meets his parents at the unit, load up the truck, and drive it to Nashville. We can help unload it in Nashville if it means just a solo driver.

I have no idea where to start and looking for help.

Thanks in advance.

We had some folks show up to our Breakfast and Billiards social yesterday! First time hosting this, and you know what they say, you gotta start somewhere!

We will have this going on the next 2 Mondays in May from 9 am to 11 am, but y'all are more than welcome to stay longer if you'd like!

Tell your grandma, grandpa, or any baby boomer you love in your life to come on down to the Chisholm Community Center next Monday for our Breakfast and Billiards!

Last Thursday night was incredible! We had over 60 people come out to play and watch pick-up futsal at the Chisholm Community Center!

It’s hard to believe that at the start of the month we only had 4 players, and now we’re at 60+ with more showing up every Thursday night.

We’ve definitely hit a few growing pains along the way, but that’s part of the process, and we’ll take it! We’re already working on improving our rules and organization to make the experience even better for everyone.

I’m extremely grateful to the City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation-MGM for allowing us to start this program. It’s something our community has needed for a long time, and I’m blessed to be a part of it.
