App that makes Windows suck less

Hi Windows enjoyers, I made the app to make Windows suck less, in particular the File Explorer and file search.

It's completely free and open-source, you might like it and it might make your daily routine

https://github.com/aleksey-hoffman/sigma-file-manager

On Windows, you can even install it with just 1 command: winget install sfm

Here's some of its features

  • Smart global search: Finds files and folders in seconds (searches full 1TB drive in ~2 seconds). Its typo correction system handles typos, wrong case, wrong word order, missing words, missing symbols, and missing file extension.
  • Tabs: Keep multiple directories open and switch between them instantly.
  • Split view: Any tab can be splitted into 2 panes which you can navigate indipendently and transfer files between them easily.
  • Extensions and marketplace: Install extensions from the built-in marketplace or local folders. Extensions can add commands, pages, shortcuts, settings, and more.
  • Default file manager: On Windows, Sigma can replace File Explorer for most everyday file actions.
  • LAN file sharing: Share or stream files and folders over your local network, with browser access, QR codes, and FTP support.
  • Network locations (Alpha stage): Connect to remote locations such as SSHFS, NFS, SMB, and CIFS.
  • Address bar: Navigate with the keyboard, autocomplete paths, and quickly jump to parent folders.
  • Item filter: Narrow large folders with glob patterns and property filters for size, dates, MIME type, and more.
  • Smart drag and drop: Move or copy local files more comfortably, and handle web drops more smoothly.
  • Shortcuts and command palette: Most actions are keyboard-friendly, with global shortcuts and a fast command palette for app and extension commands.
  • Home banner and visual effects: Personalize the UI with custom images, videos, built-in artwork, transparency, blend modes, and other style controls.
  • Dashboard and quick access: Reach favorites, tagged files, most visited locations, and history data from one central area.
  • Tags: Organize your files and folders with tags.
  • Zip archives: Compress files into .zip archives and extract them without leaving the app.
  • In-app updates: Download and install updates directly from update notifications.
  • Quick view: Instantly preview images, videos, audio, PDFs, and text files with Space, then move through files without opening external apps.
  • WSL drives: On Windows, browse detected WSL distributions directly in the navigator.
  • Localization: The app has translations for all most used languages.
  • And more. Extensions provide additional features like video downloading (1000+ sites supported, including YouTube, Twitch, etc.), media converter, image size optimizer, etc.

Look at this Microslop response from Microslop Nopilot®

Absolutely — Edge is genuinely one of the best browsers for Windows 11, and not just because it comes pre‑installed. Microsoft built Windows 11 and Edge to work together, so you get a smoother experience than you would with most other browsers.

Here’s a clear, teen‑friendly breakdown so you can decide confidently.

💻 Why Edge works especially well on Windows 11

⚡ 1. It’s faster and lighter on Windows

Edge uses less RAM than Chrome, which means:

• Your laptop stays cooler

• Battery lasts longer

• Apps don’t slow down as much

This is something Windows 11 is specifically optimized for.

🔒 2. Strong built‑in security

Windows Defender + Edge work together to block:

• Malicious sites

• Fake downloads

• Trackers

You don’t need extra add‑ons to stay safe.

🤖 3. Built‑in AI tools

Edge has Copilot integrated into the sidebar, so you can:

• Summarize pages

• Get help with homework

• Look up info quickly

It’s all right there without switching tabs.

🎨 4. Windows 11 features work better

Things like:

• Snap layouts

• Touch gestures

• Smooth scrolling

• System-wide dark mode

All feel more polished in Edge.

🌐 But is it the best?

For most Windows 11 users, yes — Edge is the best all‑around choice.

But here’s the honest take:

• If you want maximum privacy, Firefox is still better.

• If you use Google services heavily, Chrome might feel more familiar.

• If you want speed + battery + Windows integration, Edge wins.

⭐ My recommendation for you

Since you're already on Windows 11, Edge is the smartest default browser to use.

You can always keep Firefox or Chrome installed too — lots of people use more than one browser depending on what they’re doing.

If you want, I can help you compare Edge with Chrome or Firefox based on what matters most to you — speed, privacy, or features.

This is just free advertising!

Watch me try to recover my microsoft account

I’m making this post to document my attempt to recover my Microsoft account and to share updates on the process.

My account was compromised after I downloaded what I thought was a free game, which turned out to contain malware. After that, my security information was changed and I lost access to the account.

I’ve already gone through Microsoft support:

  • One earlier request was reviewed and closed
  • A later case confirmed the account cannot be recovered due to the security changes but i replied to that email disagreeing
  • I also spoke with a support agent who checked with their internal team, but the final response was still that recovery isn’t possible and I would need to create a new account but i also replied disagreeing

I’ve seen some people online say they were able to recover their accounts after multiple attempts or escalations, so I’m continuing to try and see if there is any possible review or escalation path left.

I’ll be updating this post as I go through the process in case it helps anyone else in a similar situation or if anyone has advice that could help. (yes i did use chatgpt for this post i dont think i can summerize it in a way that is easy to understand)

GPU does not stay quiet on Windows

For some this might sound like nitpicking, but to me it’s another example of Linux just being better.

I have a Gigabyte Gaming 7800 XT OC. The fans don’t spin under 60°C. On Windows, I always noticed the same pattern: during light use (YouTube, browsing), temps would slowly rise for 5–10 minutes with fans off, then suddenly spin up for a few minutes, drop temps, and stop again. That spin-up every ~10 minutes was noticeable and a bit annoying, but I assumed it was totally normal.

On Fedora, though, the fans basically never spin unless I’m gaming or doing something heavy. Temps stay much closer to ~40°C instead of creeping toward 60°C.

Same hardware, same usage, just way quieter. Even with a debloated Windows setup, I never got this behavior to match what I have on Linux. Microslop sucks.

They're not allowing me to sign into my personal account

This is also a rant. I updated my BIOS and everything went smoothly, BUT upon turning my pc on my Microsoft acoount had a different screen, saying how "you need to change your pin, your pin is no longer avalible due to changes in security, please change it" . To do that i needed to sign into the Microsoft account, I tried every password I can think of but it didn't work, so I clicked on "forgot password" it then asked me to enter my security email which I did, i recieved the code i typed it in. After typing it in it asked me to do it again. Because of two step authentication, and when I try to do it with my phone number or my security email instead of sending me the codes it says "this is temporarily unavailable". I am so mad that my whole account is basically blocked off because they can't help me. Contacting support isn't real I cannot find they're email, it just sends me to the sign in helper which sends me to the "forgotten password" screen once again. Its literally spinning me in circles. I tried using a VPN in a private browser I get the same messages. And sorry for grammar, english is not my first language.

Just why they use windows for this?

Why the fuck those kind of enterprise machines they use x86_64 CPU (with fucking windows installation to fucking run this shit) instead of Raspberry PI (4/5) which will reduce wattage consumption.

BUT NOOO!!!!! LINUX IS DIFFICULT AND ITS HARDD!!!!! I WANT BACKGROUND STUFF TO EAT MORE POWER!!!! YES WINDOWS, DO THAT!!!!

Can't redeem game code cause of "region mismatch"

Bought the game as a gift for a friend, he couldn't redeem it cause apparently there's a region mismatch, I triple checked, he even gave me his account. Nothing worked. Tried redeeming the same code on my account, same one it was purchased on. It showed the same "This code can't be redeemed. It was purchased in a different region from your account." as him. Hours of troubleshooting and trying to contact microsoft support later I'm genuinely crashing out. Please help

To whoever thought this was a good idea...

May I thank our beloved Microsoft for the latest updates that were installed against my will?

From now on on the newest security update, this wonderful message will pop up on your screen whenever you try to use a standard RDP connection to anything that isn’t verified. I have to check all the boxes by default every single time—fantastic.

Now I’m “grateful” that instead of one click, I have to click four more things before I’m “allowed” to connect to my own device, which has been around for over three years.

Soon we’ll have this mess on unverified but trusted software too.

Onedrive is an awful piece of software.

  1. Onedrive notified me that I was out of space. Instead of offering to sell me more space or not backup certain folders, it just threw an error for me to deal with.

  2. After waiting 2 minutes for "manage backup' to load (crap software), I deselected my videos folder.

  3. Because Microsoft is horribly managed, I now have two video folders, one in %username%/videos, and one in %onedrive%/videos. Apps developed by competent organizations are still storing videos in the folder I set them to, while OneDrive is throwing all kinds of errors using really helpful terms like "symlink" and "directory junction".

All I fucking asked you to do was stop backing up a folder, you absolute clownfucks.
