r/marvelchampionslcg

long time Marvel reader and Magic player, i was thinking to finally hopping on Marvel Champions.

plan would be me playing it some games with my partner and maybe a couple times with some friends, but realistically i know i will have more solo games than not.

does the game play well solo? And, of yes, is there some box i should maybe aim for aside of the starter..?

edit: thanks everyone! I think this seals the purchase! Was nice to see the community is entusiastic and supportive. Really excited to jump aboard!

This odd little room in our basement has been an experiment for the past 5 or so years. For the last two years, it has been where I usually play and store cards.

A friend 3D-printed the card holders. He used to reference a measurement made on a core set card, but we realized that different products vary in card thickness. So now I keep a basket with a nice range of capacities. I thought about sleeving; I tried it, and it's not the way I prefer to play cards.

My then-10-year old son wrote "MOM KEEP OUT" on the cover of the card box. I write and sometimes try to draw fancy names for the general storage (just identity card, hero kit, obligation, and nemesis, etc) or fully-built deck.

Jubilee is one of my favorite heroes. I've been playing through all the villains in the game with her, Expert true solo in Justice. I'm currently stuck on Ronan.

At some point—maybe by the end of this wave?—this solution will no longer work, at least in terms of storage. For play, being able to tackle a scenario and listen to stations on Radio Garden can't be beat.

The friend who 3D-printed the card holders for me recently took the plunge on Arkham Horror. I just completed the first campaign with him and his wife. Next, I'm going to introduce them to Marvel Champions. I've built decks for Gamora (J), Rocket Raccoon (A), and Groot (P). Cross your fingers they have a good time. :)

(The George [ also purely coincidentally the name of our cat] mug is from my sister-in-law)

First I want to say that I’m super excited about this next wave. I do like the idea of wanting to get away from leadership being the best aspect and trying to get away from chump blocking. But this card feels like an auto include with some heroes. Specifically Nightcrawler, with his cutlass, armored vest, defensive conditioning, and Ronin he is already at 7 def. You can then get even higher with defensive specialist and symbiote suit to 9 def. If you have electrostatic armor he has effectively 3 retaliate, doesn’t have to exhaust with bamf attached and still can deal 9 damage and 9 threat removal. He can also play stop hitting yourself for even more damage. Can include dauntless as well with the extra 13 health, and ready for a fight to build a well rounded deck. I know we are in the current environment so some of these cards aren’t being balanced around, but I’m starting to feel like the only way to not break the game is to play current. Anyone else feel this way?

Based on your experience, which heroes are most popular, and which are least popular/more obscure in the community overall?

From what I've seen:

Most popular -- Spider-man (Peter Parker) by a country mile, Magik, Domino, Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Cable... and kind of a surprise, but X-23. I see her quite a bit.

Less mainstream (ie, barely anybody talks about or plays these heroes) picks are DEFINITELY Nebula--I've never seen her at a meetup, people who 'main' Nebula are just punk rock like that-- Rocket, Iceman, Vision, Angel, and Gambit.

Curious to know if my experience lines up with yours. :)

I am writing this post to ask for your opinions. I believe that protection is currently excessively strong.

Look at the recently released RFAF. This card increases hand size. Considering the importance of hand size in this game, this card is practically broken.

The disarming defense included in Wonderman has become a way to remove Ronan's weapon.

However, what really angers me are a few events and upgrades.

Mansion draws one card for 4 mana. Unflappable draws one card for 1 mana. Hard to ignore ignores Confuse, and the same goes for Not Today.

Furthermore, heroes with 3 defense can easily add 2 defense with Vest and Conditioning, and the recently revealed Echo Ronin adds another 1 defense on top of that. This is ridiculous.

I believe that defense also needs a status that negates it, just like Attack and Thwart. What do you think?

Mind sharing what are your personal favorites or heavily used heroes? :)

This is pertaining to your favorite both in comics and marvel champions.

So after some test games i found the extra cost could mostly be ignored. I could just play the card before i played any ally that turn, prof and nick are for one turn any way and most other allys get played and then chump block. Just feels like the cost was simply not an issue unless i was trying to keep an ally in play for a long time. The down side just did not feel like a down side. Really wish it was tied to not having allys in the deck at all. Cool concept and ymmv but not what i was hoping for.

New player, a lot of videos etc seem to be 4+ years ago, what recent/regular places for info would you suggest?

Hi guys! Dad in his mid-40s who has recently tried to get into more "physical" games as with young kids I just seemed to collapse in front of the TV/Console when the kids had finally gone to sleep.

Tried a few games and fell into Marvel United, which I absolutely love. Not too complicated, plenty of content to get hold of relatively easy (limited budget, Kickstarter boxes are not for me!) and I can play in a short-ish amount of time.

Anyway I was looking for one more game to get into, and as Iike the Marvel theme (comics from the 80s and 90s as well as the current MCU stuff), Champions made the most sense. Watched some videos etc and found the Starter box for relatively cheap (arriving today) and grabbed a couple of hero packs (Psylocke and Ice-Man, as have liked their characters over the years).

A lot of the videos I have seen have been from several years ago though, probably the YouTube algorithm just feeding me similar content after watching one of them. A few mention about the rulebook being out of date, and going online to get the "proper" rules but without giving much detail. And that was years ago anyway so not sure if it's still the case. Same with "things I wish I knew when I started" type things, are they still relevant or has the game changed in significant ways over the years?

Are there channels out there that are breaking down some of the basic stuff, not just showing the latest packs etc? I get why they want to show that of course, just wondering if there is someone out there catering to the newbie. Or websites or groups like this place?

Thanks (and sorry, that's a long-winded post)

I play Spider-Man(Peter parker) decks a lot, and recently I’ve been looking into Spider-Man 2099 combos. However, honestly... he doesn't seem that useful to me.

First of all, his cost is just too high (4-cost). To make him efficient, you usually want to cheat him into play using Across the Spider-Verse. But I realized that setting up this combo is surprisingly clunky because it requires having Warrior of the Great Web or Web of Life and Destiny on the board first.

Even when you do manage to play him, his ability doesn't feel that impactful. Instead of spending resources to add a Web-Warrior to your hand, isn't it just better to let an ally chump block a villain's attack and then revive them from the discard pile with Make the Call? Or you could just use Rapid Response to bring them right back for just 2 cost.

People often talk about the 2099 + Ghost-Spider combo to fetch event cards. But if you're playing Leadership, you already have incredible card draw. Do you really need to jump through hoops to get an event card? I've found that using Ghost-Spider on her own is usually more than enough.

I’m also aware of the combo with the Otto Octavius ally, but it honestly doesn’t seem that useful for Peter Parker. You’d expect a bigger payoff for that kind of combo. Readying a Web-Shooter and drawing two cards just doesn't feel worth all the setup required to pull it off. Maybe it shines with identities that have stronger upgrades to ready, but for Peter specifically, the value feels pretty underwhelming.

My main takeaway is that there aren't enough Web-Warrior cards worth fetching to hand to justify his 4-cost. Honestly, I’d much rather just play Nick Fury in that slot.

The reason I'm writing this is that I feel like I might be playing him wrong, or maybe I'm missing a hidden combo that makes him great. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Are there any synergies or tips I should know about? Please let me know!

Hello,

I have a physical copy of the game, but I have been using an online one to learn the rules. I beat the first scenario with Rhino on my second try, but I have tried against Klaw six times and have never one. I am using a program and I assume it's implementing everything correctly, so I don't think it's an issue with the rules. Part of the problem is that he routinely summons some really strong allies and it's hard to beat them and also clear threats and harm Klaw.

Does anyone have any advice?

Many thanks!

Edit: Many thanks to all for the great advice and strong sense of community!

That fight took a while too, almost 1.5 hours. Those pesky boost cards really made things harder. I tried my best to ring the bell tower, but it kept getting removed because of the “For Whom the Bell Tolls” card.

Good thing Miles turned into my heavy hitter in the end. His big attack cards showed up near the last part of my deck, and same with Gwen’s Ghost Kick.

I’m only on Scenario 2, but honestly, I don’t feel like moving forward just yet. I might fight Venom a few more times true solo first, using all my web-slinger heroes

Is it just me or Thor is really broken. I kinda prefer Ant-man or Hulk over Thor tbh. He is always getting crushed by villains especially Loki or Thanos. Sheesh.

Thor is much weaker here in MC. I’d rather play with She-hulk or Hulk (heroes who happens to have small hand size, too).

Cheap Idea For Deck/Discard Holder

Made these a while ago out of a couple of the many empty Dragon Shield boxes i have stowed away. It keeps things organized and saves a bit of table space. Thought i'd share in case someone is looking for a similar solution to having a more organized play area. 😀
