It is beautiful to visit or study in. Absolutely!!!! But to live here for 30+ years and never living anywhere else? It seems to be a life where you just live in a loop of the same day repeating in different fonts. Long term life is literally a loop: → another café in Wyck → walk along the Maas → sit in Stadspark → pick a random bistro around Vrijthof → repeat
If you want actual variation or energy, you have to leave the city. And if “you can easily go somewhere else” is one of the biggest selling points… that kind of says everything about the place itself. It’s like saying: ” I love how close my house is to the train station” but you don’t actually enjoy being inside your home.
”But there is nature…..”
It is farmland with some grass and fields. And that is IT. It’s ridiculous. Especially if you’re from a place like say Canada, Norway or any Mediterranean country. No proper woods, wild nature. No ocean, and the ”wonderful” lakes are muddy and not fresh.
”But there’s culture, caves, museums…”
No normal person is visiting the same limestone cave for the 14th time. Once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it.
”There are lots of restaurants and cafés…”
It is basically the same thing in different fonts.
Want actual niche street food or a genuine REAL kebab or asian food - and not a watered-down version, forget it.
I saw a post yesterday about a dodgeball club coming to Maastricht. Is that actually a thing here? Like, do people in the Netherlands play this in high school too?
Honestly looks pretty fun, I might check it out as it’s beginner friendly 😅
i’ve never used reddit before so i hope i’m doing this right…
i dont rlly like the music they play in most of the “clubs” in maastricht and i was wondering if there’s a rave scene here or in any nearby cities!! i know complex has some good events but i dont really have people to go with (my friends here are very introverted and don’t like going out much). if anyone knows of the rave scene here and/or is down to go together pls dm me (the person who told me abt this app told me u can do that on here 😧) and we can exchange socials!

Limited Tasting 🙌🏽🇻🇪
¡¡Hola mi gente!! Very excited to share an announcement and a brand new limited menu with everyone.
I’ve been hard at work getting my KVK this month and I wanted to celebrate with everyone who has been supporting me from the beginning 😁 so I’m happy to announce that I’ll be taking some limited orders from this menu starting next week 🙌🏽💪🏽!
(Orders will be taken on my Instagram @Ven-A-Zeulas)
The way it’ll work is as follows:
(May 4th-7th): Taking and preparing the first 40 orders that I receive (this will be first come first serve and payments in advance for this one occasion!) 🏃🏽♂️🏃🏼♀️
(May 8th): Finalizing all 40 orders and taking care of any special precautions/allergens anyone might have! 💶⛑️
(May 9th): Letting everyone know their specific pick-up time to make their way to Sittard and receive their very first Ven-A-Zuela order! 🤤🍰
(May 10th): Sharing what items were ordered the most and how the menu/schedule will change to incorporate your feedback! 💡🫶🏽
If anyone has any questions please reach out to me and I’ll be happy to answer. Can’t wait to cook for everyone and hear what you all loved the most!!! 👨🏽🍳🇻🇪♥️
I have some heavy furniture that the next tenant doesn’t want to take over, so I have to find a way to remove it. I live on the first floor so it is a bit difficult. But I just wanted to know if anyone knows anyone who could help me remove these items at least on the ground floor, so the Kringloop or Gemeente can take them. They are good furniture in good use but I am just afraid if i list them because its heavy it might be hard to remove. Thank you!
Hey everyone!
We’re starting a weekly dodgeball club in Maastricht 🤾 Our first session will be on 10 May, location TBD
If you haven't heard of dodgeball before (or trefbal in Dutch), it's a team sport where you try to hit the other team with foam balls while dodging (or catching!) theirs.
Our goal is just having fun and meeting people, so no experience necessary! We'll explain the rules at the start, so it’s easy to jump in even if it’s your first time.
If you’re interested, sign up here (first session’s free):
https://gronsdodgeball.nl/card/MST
We usually hang out a bit afterwards to grab a drink, chat, and play some card games, so feel free to stick around after the session for that.
Thus far I’ve been to Aachen for two sessions, but I dread going there everytime due to German roads (I stress about having to drive there).
So if anyone knows of a clinic that does it here, please let me know!
Hi all,
I’m currently looking to buy a property in the Maastricht / Limburg area and considering hiring an aankoopmakelaar (buying agent).
As an expat, the process feels a bit overwhelming, especially with bidding strategies, local market dynamics, and all the legal/technical aspects involved. From what I’ve read, a good aankoopmakelaar can really help with things like negotiations, evaluating properties, and even getting access to listings earlier.
So I wanted to ask:
Do you have any aankoopmakelaar recommendations in Maastricht or Limburg?
Ideally someone with good experience working with expats
And if possible, how was your experience (communication, success in securing a house, fees, etc.)?
Also curious if you felt it was really worth it in the current market.
Thanks a lot in advance!
Hi everyone,
I´m going to study in Maastricht for my Master next Sept. I currently live in Germany and work here as a working student (20 hours a week). Since I´ll be moving to the Netherlands I will have to quit my current job and was wondering on the opportunities in Maastricht. I guess I will not have the chance to work in an investment bank as I´m currently doing, nor to work in the financial sector as the job market in Maastricht will be offering limited occasions and probably mostly "random" jobs such as cashier or waiter (which I worked for years when I was younger). I had a couple of questions for whomever has an answer!
I heard that as EU citizen you can work 1 day a week (8 hours) and eventually get some funds from the Dutch government. I was told that every student who applies gets 300-400 euro a month + if you can prove that you don´t own too much money / your parents do not have a high income then you can get an addiotional 400/500 euro a month. Can you confirm me if it´s true and what the limits / requirments are?
How hard would it be to find a job that allows you to work just once a week in Maastricht? I figure that the big amount of students are already saturating the job market + working just once a week is probably not ideal for the employer so maybe there a not so many opportunites?
Will not speaking Dutch be a problem when looking for a job? (I got english, german, italian and spanish only)
Are there any other benefits the great Dutch governement offers for european students?
Thanks a lot for your feedback and feel free to tell me whatever come to your mind even if I did not ask!
not today but at some point. let me know.
Hi, I (21m) am a founder of a company and at the same time I am studying International Business @ Zuyd. Before this degree I was studying Health in Portugal and I was part of the faculty’s Students Association Board. As so, I organised two TEDx and a major event on Sexual, Reproductive and Mental Health.
Now that I am here I would love to re-create that same event but in Maastricht, making it more international, with a bigger cultural agenda and create seminars for health students and others for art and even business students. The event would be from 2 to 3 days, and with a party/social plan included.
If you live in Maastricht, would you like to participate? What would you like to see? Would you even want to join the staff? Do you have experience with this kind of events in Maastricht?
I've been working on my Dutch for a few weeks now and it's going okay - can hold a conversation if the other person is patient. But somehow I always end up back in English. Not talking about international students, that makes sense, but just on the street or in shops.
Yesterday I was at a coffee place near the Vrijthof and ordered in Dutch, accent and everything. The barista looked at me and immediately switched to English. Felt like a small failure tbh. I know they probably meant well and thought it'd be easier, but it's a bit frustrating.
Growing up between Japan and the US, I had the opposite experience in Japan - foreigners speaking Japanese get compliments like you're some kind of miracle. Here it's more subtle, people just switch without saying anything. Not saying it's bad, it's just... idk, I want to practice and barely get the chance.
So I'm curious - are there places in Maastricht where it's just Dutch? Not language courses or expat meetups, just normal daily stuff. A gym, a café, a club, whatever. Heard some neighborhoods outside the center are different but I don't know the city that well yet.
Or is this just a phase every international goes through
I just found a headphone case of the brand NOTHING just near FASOS I did saw the girl that drop them but she was on the bike and was too quick. So if you out there I have your headphone case claim it when you free in dm.
I know it is not in Maastricht but close enough to be on my morning walk.
Hi everyone! I've recently been looking for a spot to play some casual chess in the city. I’m not necessarily looking for a professional club environment, just some friendly games over coffee or something. Does anyone know of any cafes, bars, or community centers where people regularly meet up to play?
Thanks in advance!
Hi everyone,
I’m a 25-year-old Italian planning to move to the Netherlands soon, and I’d really appreciate some advice 😊
I’ve potentially found an apartment in Maastricht through House Hunting, and I have a few questions:
1. House Hunting agency – Has anyone had experience with them? Are their contracts generally reliable/fair? I’ve received a contract from them and just want to make sure everything is standard before signing.
2. Rent price – The rent would be €1250/month (€900 bare rent + €350 service costs). Does this sound reasonable for Maastricht for a one-person apartment?
3. Utilities (gas, water, electricity) – I understand these are usually paid as a monthly advance. How does the final settlement work?
• Is it common to have to pay extra at the end of the year?
• Or is it possible to get money back if you’ve overpaid?
€350/month for utilities seems not super low but not extremely high either for one person—does that sound realistic?
4. Municipal taxes – I’ve been told everything is included except the municipality tax. Roughly how much should I expect to pay per year?
5. Registration – How does registration with the municipality work once I sign the contract? Is it straightforward?
6. Health insurance – Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced health insurance for expats?
Since I’ll be moving on an entry-level salary and rent is quite high, I just want to make sure I understand all potential costs upfront and avoid surprises.
Thanks so much in advance for your help! 🙏
Hey!
I'm planning to visit Maastricht next month, and was thinking to do a day trip to Drielandenpunt. I've tried looking for previous experience in this subreddit, but found none (perhaps I use the incorrect keywords, but anyway).
I was wondering if it is viable to go there using public transportation?
and do you have any suggestions on what to do there (besides the three point landmark)?
I will appreciate any leads. Thanks 😊
Anyone from Maastricht going to the Comic Con in Den Bosch?
