Working student and state benefits

Hi everyone,

I´m going to study in Maastricht for my Master next Sept. I currently live in Germany and work here as a working student (20 hours a week). Since I´ll be moving to the Netherlands I will have to quit my current job and was wondering on the opportunities in Maastricht. I guess I will not have the chance to work in an investment bank as I´m currently doing, nor to work in the financial sector as the job market in Maastricht will be offering limited occasions and probably mostly "random" jobs such as cashier or waiter (which I worked for years when I was younger). I had a couple of questions for whomever has an answer!

  1. I heard that as EU citizen you can work 1 day a week (8 hours) and eventually get some funds from the Dutch government. I was told that every student who applies gets 300-400 euro a month + if you can prove that you don´t own too much money / your parents do not have a high income then you can get an addiotional 400/500 euro a month. Can you confirm me if it´s true and what the limits / requirments are?

  2. How hard would it be to find a job that allows you to work just once a week in Maastricht? I figure that the big amount of students are already saturating the job market + working just once a week is probably not ideal for the employer so maybe there a not so many opportunites?

  3. Will not speaking Dutch be a problem when looking for a job? (I got english, german, italian and spanish only)

  4. Are there any other benefits the great Dutch governement offers for european students?

Thanks a lot for your feedback and feel free to tell me whatever come to your mind even if I did not ask!
