"I believe that Lil Peep, probably of all the artists I’ve heard recently, touched on that same angst, and it’s so sad that he passed away because he was just getting to the bigger part of his work, you know?”, he said in 2018.

https://www.nme.com/news/music/billy-corgan-says-lil-peep-was-his-generations-kurt-cobain-2849455

Rolling Stone magazine didn't use the exact same words as Corgan, but they have claimed a few times that Lil Peep was indeed set to become the Kurt Cobain of his generation.

What do you all think about this? And what are your thoughts on Lil Peep’s music and the rock influence (including Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins) found in many of his recordings?

Two of Lil Peep’s most awesome and rock-oriented songs are "Awful Things," which has already been covered by famous pop-punk bands like Good Charlotte, and "Falling Down"—specifically the Travis Barker of Blink-182 remix—featuring Peep’s vocals interspersed with those of XXXTentacion, and released posthumously after both had passed away.

One of his songs is titled "Cobain," while another, "On the Run," samples "Luna" by The Smashing Pumpkins. Furthermore, Peep and his friend Cold Hart referenced Kurt and Courtney in the song "Dying," and one of Peep's tracks, "Another Song," begins and ends with clips from an interview where Kurt discusses addiction and suicide.

With Ten turning 35 this year, I've been thinking a lot about this conversation I recorded with Jeff Ament for my podcast — specifically this clip where he unpacks his relationship with the word "grunge" in real time.

A few things in here that I didn't expect:

  • He's pretty clear that "grunge" always felt like a Sub Pop/Mudhoney/Melvins term to him — not Pearl Jam's. He was in Green River with Mark Arm, so he felt connected to it, but he and Stone always wanted to push further out the moment a sound started to define them.
  • He knew Chris Novoselic five years before Nevermind existed. The way he frames the scene isn't nostalgia — it's more like a neighborhood he grew up in.
  • The part that actually stopped me: he talks about the people who are gone now — Kurt, Layne, Mark Lanegan — and how the resentment of being grouped together has flipped into something closer to wanting to champion them. Hard not to feel that.
  • He calls it "the last real scene" and then immediately asks if I'd seen Meet Me in the Bathroom — which says something about how he's still measuring it.

Short clip, about two and a half minutes. Felt like the right moment to share it given the anniversary.

Kurt's Top 50 Albums on YouTube Music

Hey y'all, this took me some time to put together because I had to remove previously unreleased tracks, live versions, certain alternate mixes, etc. Enjoy!

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJ69z-0er0bYRays4Tcsbv27ZVxBnNfFh

Notes:

  1. I put the Shonen Knife songs in the order they were released via cassette.
  2. Kleenex changed their name to LiLiPUT.
  3. I used the standard 24 track cut for the Faith/Void split.
  4. The Lead Belly Last Sessions Volume 1 was most likely the 1953 LP, so I included the tracks that would have been included in that.
  5. I limited Superfuzz Bigmuff to the original EP track list.
  6. Meet the Beatles had to be put together piece by piece because that specific release is not on YouTube Music.
  7. Kurt seemed to endorse anything Mazzy Star, but I only included "She Hangs Brightly" because it was estimated that this list was written in 1992.
  8. I included Swan's entire album "Cop / Young God" instead of just the EP because the full album came out in 1984 and he likely was referring to the whole album.

If Kurt Cobain was in EarthBound, here would be his stats…

In the first fight with him after getting Jeff from Winters:

HP: 1500
PP: 500
Offense: 45
Defense: 75
Guts: 50
Speed: 70

His strengths and weaknesses:

PSI Fire: 25% damage
PSI Freeze: 50% damage
PSI Flash: 0% chance of success
Paralysis: 10% chance of success
Brainshock: 0% chance of success
Hypnosis: 99% chance of success

His moveset:

PSI Shield Alpha, Brainshock Alpha (causes one party member to feel strange), Glare with his eerie eyes (which causes one party member to be Diamondized), PSI Magnet Omega, Replenish a fuel supply (Lifeup Gamma without using PP) and PSI Starstorm Alpha

In the rematch with Ness by himself in Magicant, Kurt has three forms: Weak, Average and Strong

Weak form:

HP: 1000
PP: 0
Attack: 10
Defense: 100

All he does is attack and his guts is 255.

Average form:

HP: 2500
PP: 0
Attack: 225
Defense: 75

He can fire a missile which causes himself to feel dizzy, big damage to you. He loses his temper which raises his offense. He can Diamondize you, which is why I recommend the Rabbit's Foot over the Sea Pendent. And of course, replenish a fuel supply once again. Be thankful in both of these forms, hypnosis is 99% chance of being successful

Strong form:

HP: 10000
PP: 999
Attack and Defense are both 255
Strengths and Weaknesses are the same except Hypnosis is now 50% chance of success while Brainshock is 10% chance of success. So yes, if you are lucky, Kurt can turn himself into a Diamond while feeling a bit strange despite being only 10% chance.

His attacks in the strong form are: Glare with his eyes (IYKYK), PSI Shield Beta (Psychic Power Shield), PSI Starstorm Omega, Brainshock Omega, PSI Magnet Omega and Replenish a Fuel Supply (I know, I know, he loves healing himself back to full).

Upon death, Kurt explodes like the Atomic Power Robot and Nuclear Reactor Robot.

His theme song would be Otherworldly Foe

I hear ppl say that he hated that Nirvana was labeled grunge and I honestly agree it isn’t grunge it’s punk rock Kurt loved punk rock and that is what Nirvana is they speak out against racism, sexism,SA and so on and they go against what the world at the time was which was trying to keep ahold of respect for the white man while keeping women and people of color still beneath them.

In I think his letter before he died he wrote how he hated the band and Courtney says Kurt hated Dave and I think he hated nirvana not Dave himself but because people ignored the messages of his songs and that’s why „rape me“ is directly on the nose in an interview he hated that he had to be direct and said people still argued over the message of said song.

He was for LGBTQ+ rights and freedom from our oppressive government and people labeled it as a emotional dude who wrote about his feelings which some were about him but he made punk rock music and that’s what it should be recognized for being.

Hi, I'm looking for everything Kurt has ever produced.

Not just music, but did he also write? I'd like interviews, written interviews. I have the film Montage of Heck to watch. Do you have any recommendations?

Does Krist have things like that too?

Got inspired by early 90s grunge photoshoots. Wanted to capture that same raw, unpolished energy. Shot on my phone, no filter. Let me know what you think.
