Detroit style Coney Island hot dogs at home

Koegels hot dogs and chilli from Kroger’s in metro Detroit brought back to Virginia. The secret to making coneys like the best, Lafayette Coney Island, is to add a little coffee when making the chilli.

Eggs and hot dogs

Since my wife isn't home tonight I decided to fry up some hot dogs with scrambled eggs because I know she wouldn't eat this.

I'm planning to throw a hot dog party for extended family. Here is my proposed menu (yes we're going to pretend it's a restaurant). Any suggestions?

I'm going to tell them ahead of time that we're having "hot dogs" and leave it at that. They will expect weiners and ketchup and mustard, maybe chips and salad on the side. I want to surprise them with a full menu.

This menu is a WIP but has been designed with the idea that I'll be assembling all these dogs myself and I think I can assemble everything in about 20 mins after taking orders (with most of the prep having been done ahead of time).

Chicagoans, please don't come at me for using pepperoncini's. I've looked for sport peppers and I can't find them. I read that pepperoncini's are an acceptable alternative.

Grilled a Hot Dog

Thought I would try something different today. My grandma always used to pickle a combination of red onion and cucumbers and bring to every dinner. I have always loved them as a side so I figured why not try it on a hot dog?

I did a really basic pickle with red onions and cucumber slices and peppercorns in apple cider vinegar and just enough honey to offset the tanginess.

Grilled up a Kirkland dog on the Kettle over charcoal and threw it over some yellow mustard. Loved it - will definitely do again.

The classical dogs…

So in my mind there are only three truly classical dogs: the Chicago, the coney, and what I call the ballpark…

Chicago: Steamed Vienna Beef, dill spear, tomato slices, white onion, sweet relish, mustard, sport pepper, and celery salt on a steamed poppyseed bun.

Coney: Steamed dog, chili, cheese sauce, onion, and mustard on a steamed bun.

Ballpark: Dog on a bun with any/all of the following: mustard, ketchup, sweet relish, onion.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m down for other dogs… slaw, grilled onions and peppers, bacon, kraut, other meats, cheese (I love a slice of American between the bun and the dog), any sauce, in ramen, in mac-n-cheese… it’s all good and wirth trying. BUT, the three classical dogs are still my favorites. I grew up in Ohio.
