Favorite budget club?

Favorite budget club?

This is a Hippo Hex2 driver I bought back in 2009, probably from Rockbottomgolf for $50. It ended up being my favorite driver for a number of years and I hit it better than any big brand drivers I had before. Still have it today and give it a few swings in the simulator.

Anyone else have a favorite or memorable budget club?

I’ve been working on a golf polo brand focused on fit and performance—would love some honest feedback on the design. (Not trying to spam, just genuinely improving the product)

I Need New Irons

Hi everyone! I need new irons. I’m currently using Mizuno MP18 irons and they are too hard to hit with me being around a 25 handicap. I’m interested in game improvement irons but don’t want to break the bank on brand new irons. I am also 6’3” with a 36” wrist to ground measurement so i don’t know if i should get them 1/2” longer or not. My swing speed is consistently around 76-78 so i also don’t know if i should buy regular flex or stiff flex and hope i grow into them. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Looking to Build my Own Club Set

As the title says, been watching how to build clubs and I reallyndo want a new set of modern clubs. Monarch has sets that I can buy with everything I need (want) for $410. Looking at new sets online, that price seems to be about half of what I was looking at purchasing.

My question is has anyone on this sub built their own clubs and what is your opinion on how well they work for you. I will say that building my own set would be a great moral booster for myself and another hobby to add to my list of other hobbies....

Broken driver

Well it happened, was hitting my driver at the range today and not sure when or how (I had played a round today), but the head broke. A pretty major crack it’s not playable anymore. I have been wanting to get fitted for some clubs now that I’ve been getting a little better, and now seems the right time. How will the fitting work if I don’t bring my own driver? Will they provide one for me to swing? I’ve never been fitted so this will be my first time, sorry if it’s a dumb question, just curious and didn’t know if it’s a bring-your-own-driver thing.

Optimal Driver length?

Been playing consistently for about 5 years now and I always seem to be gripping down on my driver as it feels too long for me (5’9 male). Recently cut my driver from 45” to around 41” and I feel like it has made much more consistent and better ball striking with my driver. I have heard that having it that short would make me lose distance and is at the same length as a wood or even some hybrid lengths. Is there anything wrong with having a shorter than normal driver or should i learn to play a “standard” length?

Irons questions

Currently I’m gaming 2009 burner irons. I love them but am curious about moving up and what the future holds. I’m around a 22 handicap, but my irons are the strongest part of my game IMO. I have never been fitted, and usually shop used. Is there a specific brand or line of irons to look into? I hear a lot of good things about mizunos. Should I just get fitted or what?

Face balanced?

I just had a new KBS black shaft installed on my Scotty phantom 9R putter. Unfortunately, it seems crooked, the toe slants up. Next to it is a picture of a toe hang putter. Would this affect performance? Is this just my OCD kicking in or should I take it back to the guy who installed it to fix it? Prior to the shop being installed I did not test the stock shaft but I feel like a face balance putter should be pretty even?

Bachelor Gift Idea ~ seeking advice

Hello all, looking for suggestions on this gift idea. We have a pretty close group of about 8 guys who have more or less been in all of eachothers weddings. One of our buddies is getting married in Oct and we are going in together as a groomsmen present for him. He loves to golf and probably gets out 20-30 times a year. We were thinking of getting him a club of some sort and getting it personalized/engraved. We know better than to get him a driver or putter since hes likely spent a lot of time getting just the one he wants. We were thinking some sort of sand or pitching wedge?

Any ideas or suggestions here? (Hes also a lefty)

Gapping issues with 2023 P790s

I got fitted for these back in 2023 and have just recently started tracking my shots. Anyone else notice a significant gap from 8i to 7i? I track my shots real time with Garmin S70 golf watch so we’re not talking range sessions with Map my Bag, but dozens of rounds over the last year.

For reference I keep a 12-17 yd gap between all my irons except 8i-7i, it’s a 26 yard gap.

Bonus issue… I don’t like my gapping from 50* to PW… anyone else have that issue?

Buy new irons?

I’m new to golf, I was gifted a set of Ping ISIs a few years back but haven’t got into golf until this year. I broke my 7 iron shaft and the salesman said it would be roughly $100 to fix.

I was intending to get it fix and buy a new driver because I don’t have my own.

The salesman suggested buying a new complete set, used or new. They had callaway strata’s for $500. His reasoning was that it would be more difficult to learn golf on the older set of irons and would lead to a higher likelihood I get disinterested. As well as I would be able to get a driver and woods.

Would it be that hard learning with Ping ISIs? I wanted to play with these for a year or two and buy a newer set. Now, hes got me thinking I may need to buy more modern clubs.

Working on a new kind of golf bag. Would love some honest feedback

Hi all,

Average golfer here. love the game and looking to create something that makes life a little easier.

I’ve been quietly working on something for a while and thought this would be a good place to get some honest opinions from people who actually care about golf gear.

I’m developing a new type of golf bag called Swift Golf. The idea is pretty simple: it looks like a normal bag, but it actually cleans your clubs automatically.

You insert your clubs head-first, and there’s a motorised brush system built into the base that cleans them as you put them back. So after every shot, your club is ready to go again without having to scrub it yourself.

The goal is to keep it feeling completely natural to use, no extra steps, no faffing around mid-round, just cleaner clubs without thinking about it.

EDITS I 100% have not communicated the features very well. Below are some answers to clear up questions:

  • Each slot has its club number on the top. So, for example, you put your 9 iron in the 9 slot. The slots are customisable, so each golfer can pick their loadout. It's easier to find your club.
  • The bag is about the size of a trolley bag, and does not weigh much more
  • This is not designed for golfers who are very good at cleaning their clubs. Golfers who do this look after their equipment, and their clubs look good for it. This is for the golfers who put their clubs away dirty at the end of the round. You know who you are ;)
  • The base removes to empty dirt at the end of each round.

I’m planning to launch it on Kickstarter soon, and I’ve put together a pre-launch page here:

Website and Instagram if you want to follow along:

I’d genuinely love some feedback:

  • What do you like?
  • What would you change?
  • What price would you expect?

Happy to answer any questions as well, still refining things, so all input is useful.

Have a great day, and keep swinging.

Cheers!

Bought forgiving irons but regret it… should I switch to players irons?

Post:I’m stuck in my own head and need some outside opinions.

I just got a set of Wilson Staff Model XB irons (hollow body, more forgiving), and I can’t tell if I made the right decision. I went into my fitting fully expecting to go with something like Srixon ZXi7 or a players-style iron because I like the idea of that type of club.

For context:

I have a pretty fast swing speed

On Trackman I was hitting center face a lot

When I flush it, I want that pure forged feel

But when I missed slightly (thin/heel), I didn’t like how bad it felt on players irons

That’s basically why I ended up in the XBs — they felt great overall and were way more forgiving.

Now that I have them, I can’t stop thinking that I should’ve gone with ZXi7 instead, especially since they’re actually cheaper. I almost feel like I “took the easy way out” and I’m worried I’ll outgrow the XBs quickly.

At the same time, I know I don’t hit it perfectly every swing, and I do like that the XBs keep my misses playable.

I guess my main questions are:

Am I overthinking this and XB is actually a better fit for someone in my situation?

Or should I go with something like ZXi7 if I care more about feel/feedback and improving ball striking?

Has anyone switched from a forgiving hollow body to a players iron and been happy (or regretted it)?

I feel like no matter what I choose I’ll second guess it, so just looking for some honest opinions from people who’ve been through it.

Appreciate any advice.
