Bought forgiving irons but regret it… should I switch to players irons?
Post:I’m stuck in my own head and need some outside opinions.
I just got a set of Wilson Staff Model XB irons (hollow body, more forgiving), and I can’t tell if I made the right decision. I went into my fitting fully expecting to go with something like Srixon ZXi7 or a players-style iron because I like the idea of that type of club.
For context:
I have a pretty fast swing speed
On Trackman I was hitting center face a lot
When I flush it, I want that pure forged feel
But when I missed slightly (thin/heel), I didn’t like how bad it felt on players irons
That’s basically why I ended up in the XBs — they felt great overall and were way more forgiving.
Now that I have them, I can’t stop thinking that I should’ve gone with ZXi7 instead, especially since they’re actually cheaper. I almost feel like I “took the easy way out” and I’m worried I’ll outgrow the XBs quickly.
At the same time, I know I don’t hit it perfectly every swing, and I do like that the XBs keep my misses playable.
I guess my main questions are:
Am I overthinking this and XB is actually a better fit for someone in my situation?
Or should I go with something like ZXi7 if I care more about feel/feedback and improving ball striking?
Has anyone switched from a forgiving hollow body to a players iron and been happy (or regretted it)?
I feel like no matter what I choose I’ll second guess it, so just looking for some honest opinions from people who’ve been through it.
Appreciate any advice.
