Found this mysterious 1911 Danish portrait at a Berlin flea market
Hi everyone,
I recently found this old framed portrait at a flea market in Germany, and on the back there is a handwritten text that appears to be in Danish (possibly early 1900s handwriting).
From what we can partially read, it seems to mention a woman named Margrethe something (possibly Bockward/Rockward?) who “druknet” (drowned) in the English Channel in the autumn of 1911 after a ship sank. It also mentions someone called “Kulgrosserer Abel, Aalborg,” which seems to have been a real coal company/business in Aalborg, Denmark.
I would love help with:
deciphering the handwriting,
identifying the correct name,
understanding the first line,
and possibly finding information about the shipwreck or the person mentioned.
It feels like a real family memorial that somehow survived more than 100 years and ended up in a Berlin flea market.
I attached photos of both the portrait and the handwritten text. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Fik dette brev i postkassen. Synes det er at gå over grænsen. Tænkte det var en bekymret nabo eller noget jeg skulle tage stilling til. Men så er bare fucking Jehovas Vidner!
