What happens if I don't pay?

Recently whilst drunk I bid on an item I must've thought was cool, but now looking back on it I'd be overpaying by around 100€ if I actually went through with the payment. The bidding is already over and I was the winner.. What would the consequences be for not paying?

Why would someone list a high-value item (€550–€650 estimate) with "No reserve price" on Catawiki?

I came across a listing on Catawiki where an expert estimated an item’s value at €550– 650€ and the seller chose "No reserve price".

Doesn’t this mean the item could sell for as little as 1€ - 2€ if no one bids higher? That seems strange for something with such a high estimate. Am I missing something about how Catawiki’s auctions work or is this a risk the seller is intentionally taking?

Thanks!

Bought from private seller but can't use it

Hi guys

I've been dumb and bought a painting that won't fit my wall the way I want it to, mixed some numbers up and it's going to cover a light switch. Any advice on how to cancel the order or re-sell the painting? It's from a private seller unfortunately.

Anyone has any experience with simply not paying for it?

Any way I can contact the other bidders?

Cheers

[SCAM] Won a Catawiki auction but haven't paid yet. Will they still try to charge the buyer's fee if I cancel?

Hey everyone,

Long story short: I just won an auction on Catawiki from an EU pro seller, but I haven't paid anything yet.

Right after winning, I realized the brand (Techno Tempo) is essentially an Alibaba dropshipping scam. They artificially inflate their retail prices so Catawiki "experts" estimate a €110 watch at €1,500+.

Catawiki auction: https://www.catawiki.com/fr/l/103359644-tecnotempo-moon-phase-aurora-borealis-special-edition-tt-50mp-arb-homme-2020-et-apres

Same watch on Alibaba (Brand can custom color) : https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Most-Popular-Products-LOBINNI-18010-Relogio_62504918432.html

To make it even more obvious, the official TechnoTempo website shares the exact same company registration number (CS-192859) as the Catawiki seller ("WatchStore"), who seems to exclusively sell brand-new TechnoTempo watches...

I immediately used my EU 14-day right of withdrawal to cancel the order. Legally, under EU Directive 2011/83/EU (Article 15), using the right of withdrawal on the main purchase automatically cancels any ancillary contracts—like platform fees—at no cost to the consumer.

My question for anyone who has dealt with this: since the law is on my side and I haven't paid yet, will Catawiki just drop it, or will they still try to come after me for their buyer's fee? What are the chances I get out of this without paying a single cent?

Thanks!

A NON-EXISTENT PAINTER (J. HANTER) IS ALWAYS OVERESTIMATED BY CATAWIKI EXPERTS ON X10. THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD FRIENDSHIP. M.R. ARROYO

The artist J. Hanter, who doesn't actually exist (it's a name invented by the painter María Rosario Arroyo due to the many negative reviews she received), is always overvalued in expert estimates by a factor that multiplies the hammer price tenfold. https://www.catawiki.com/en/u/26576211-de-gea-art

Take a look. There are more lots to see.

These auctions aren't over yet, that's true. But we'll be able to see the usual results, which I've already checked many times.

What the hell is that "Gallery Estimated" price??? Which gallery??? Are you kidding??? Catawiki experts: Do you think we're stupid?

Damn experts! Don't they have any shame? Or are they acting this way on purpose, following orders "from above"??

This "painter" continues to use the same trick she used before: a digital print covered in paint to pretend it's an original oil painting. It's true that she now uses more paint, though. But she paints the canvas from behind with a roller, creating curious, leopard-print patterns, in a sloppy attempt to hide the digital print if someone were to look through it under a strong light...

What kind of shitty practice is this? Who, in the name of God, covers the canvas with roller paint from behind in such a suspicious way?

This artist also has a second shop on Catawiki where she offers sculptures, which are also overvalued by experts:

https://www.catawiki.com/en/u/5013993-mariarosario23

It is the story of an old "friendship" that began with the unconditional protection of the expert Tatiana Ruiz and that has become a tradition followed by Itziar Ramos, Anthony Chrisp, Egidio Emiliano, and many others who apparently have all studied at the same university and all them agree in the estimation of these paintings which -this is a purely personal opinion of mine- are a real piece of crap painted by a clumsy amateur who demonstrates that she has never known what good brushwork means. And the experts know even less.

Catawiki art experts, I recommend applying for a position at Sotheby's or Christie's; they'll welcome you with open arms, no doubt! (ask Tatiana Ruiz; she used to work at Christie's some years ago...)

Hi everyone,
I recently submitted an item for auction on Catawiki, but it has been under expert review for about 3 days now.

I was wondering if anyone here has experience with this—how long does the expert review process usually take?

Thanks.

De experts op Catawiki doen hun werk zeer slecht, zo checken zij niet wat een verkoper aanbied en schrijft over zijn kavel, de experts nemen alles gewoon over als zijnde het de waarheid en feit is. Zo de koper benadelend.

What's going on in the Art section?

When an artist sends their pieces from a specific country, the lots are always filtered by the same experts (for the logical reason of standardizing languages). They are then assigned to the appropriate auctions, but the filtering process is usually the same.

So, if you send art from Spain, the filtering expert is very often Carmen Iñiguez Berbeira, Itziar Ramos or others from the same team, and the supervisor is Heiko Neitzel.

What happens when someone sends a lot with a reserve price, it's accepted, but the lot doesn't sell? They don't let you resubmit it unless you don't set a reserve price.

Or rather, they don't accept it again unless you're a member of the "official friends club".

These sellers are allowed to send repeated lots over and over again, even if they don't sell, and they always put them back up for auction with a reserve price. Why? It's very simple:

Catawiki experts receive a bonus on top of their salary if they list more lots than their monthly target.

In other words, the system rewards experts for quantity, not for results or quality. I know this for a fact.

What ends up happening? Experts tend to accept lots only from sellers who offer items in bulk—auction galleries, antique dealers, or resellers of items from house clearances.

This way, they get a lot of work done at once and can easily reach the quota of lots needed to receive that bonus at the end of the month. The team led by Heiko Neitzel puts this into practice with complete impunity, and the "expert" Carmen Iñiguez Berbeira accepts lots that have already been offered time and time again—from, for example, these sellers:

 https://www.catawiki.com/es/u/2425667-subastabcn

 https://www.catawiki.com/es/u/22563611-pictura-subastas

 https://www.catawiki.com/es/u/23463889-pictura-galeria

There are many others, of course.

I suppose that being an expert in a field, and never actually getting to smell or touch a lot with your own hands, makes you ultimately indifferent to this kind of work. It must be a naturally assimilated apathy born out of frustration, I suppose.

To me, this kind of behavior seems as unprofessional as can be, and if it were up to me, I'd fire this team of "experts" immediately. I don't think they can do their jobs with any interest or honesty anymore.

The platform's credibility is certainly plummeting—if it has any left at all—and I would be very grateful if one of these experts had the guts to reply to this post and refute my claims.
