The Premise

CalcByEA is a fully functional web calculator where almost every button is locked behind a paywall. You need to buy 'DLC packs' to unlock basic operations like addition, multiplication, and the equals sign.

The number 0 is free. Everything else costs money.

This is not a bug. This is the product.

It's satire on the video game industry's microtransaction model — specifically EA Games, who turned a $2 cosmetic DLC in 2006 (Horse Armor for Oblivion) into a multi-billion dollar monetization philosophy.

I built this as a mirror to the gaming industry. EA has been voted 'Worst Company in America' twice, and yet their model of shipping incomplete games and selling the rest as DLC became standard across the entire industry.

By 2021, FIFA Ultimate Team was generating $1.6B/year from digital card packs alone. The Sims 4 base game went free while the full content now costs $1,000+. Star Wars Battlefront II's loot boxes triggered government investigations into gambling laws.

So I asked: what if we applied the same logic to something universally free - a calculator?

Try it yourself. Try to add 1 + 1. See how far you get for free.

scored an authentic fx-991EX

There is an absolute flood of counterfeits out there. It's getting ridiculous trying to dodge the fakes. I gladly came across a guy from Pune(India) selling one and took a chance. It was just delivered today, got it for around Rs 800($8).

Calculator question for my son who surpassed me in math 5 years ago

My son is 14, and I really hate when parents gush about how smart their kids are, unfortunately this scenario necessitates it and I need to ask the experts. My son is “Twice exceptional” and is labeled as gifted in mathematics, but with an IEP because his ADHD is the thing nightmares are made of. I fucking love this kid, he’s a chaos monster nerd, cut from my own cloth. That being said he and I were discussing proficiency in coding languages. I described what languages I’m proficient in and he did the same. He speaks TI-BASIC like a savant. The things I’ve seen him come up with on TI - 80 series calculators is insane. Today we had a meeting for his IEP designation and his VSI is off the charts (<99.9% globally), and I want to encourage that. Through our discussions about coding languages he brought up in passing that he wants a TI Nspire. First, for a hobbyist 14 year old math kid that can spend hours playing with a calculator a good investment? Can anyone tell me what he might do with this? I understand this is not really a school calculator for him, but the amount of calculators he has in his room demonstrate this is a passion, not a school thing. He writes python already and dabbles in other languages. Any thoughts from the community would help

F<>D and S<>D, or equivalent calculator functions

Many non-CAS devices like to tout their exact to decimal approximation conversion capabilities (and vice versa!). What do people think of this feature?

In my humble opinion, this is one of the most insidious, misleading and potentially dangerous features developed in the entire history of electronic calculators. I feel it’s sufficiently misguided to warrant the accusation that calculator manufacturers are fundamentally compromising the ability of young students to properly comprehend the properties of real numbers.

I think it’s especially asinine to give the impression that there’s a one-to-one mapping between a real number and its decimal approximation. To confuse matters further, the conversion often fails on very simple numbers such as 1/pi.

Wouldn’t it be much better to first implement a full CAS engine, then disable all of its algebra functions on the lower tier models? And then remove this nefarious button from the keyboard, and only permit one-way conversion from exact to decimal form, like any sensible mathematician would.

What are people’s thoughts on this?

If you could only use one in this photo for the rest of your life which one are you picking? (Pretend the nspire is cas 😭)

Ti-84 evo finally came 🙏

Personally I’m picking the nspire as the documents feature is so helpful and the mouse just makes everything so easy, if ti made a modern 89 that would definitely be my pick it’s one of the best out there

(HELP) What is the difference between these two, and which one should I get?

The one that seems more recent ( x 2025) is cheaper, but also what I've noticed is that the refular 'hp' one seems to have a larger display, and looks like it's a better model.

Shouls I worry about the difference?

Calculator watch:)

Always loved calculators and especially watches with them. Only one left in my collection is my 80’s radio shack one. I do have a ti-89, and ti-83 too.

Casio 9860GII added to the collection... and SD questions.

Picked up this drawer queen off ebay. Don't think it was hardly used and included the QSGuide and cord. Love the larger screen and backlight option, similar to my Slim. Found the power graphic 2 version too.

Ideally, I was looking for the SD version. Which version has the most apps, SH3 or SH4? Also, can you store programs/apps on the SD card to run, or do they need to be in the calculator memory?

9860GII SD come in SH3 and SH4 (Power 2) with both being premium prices on ebay. Though Graph 95 (French version) are cheaper. Besides the test mode, are there any differences between the international 9860GII SD and the Graph 95? Does the Graph 95 have both SH3 and SH4 variants?

Thanks!

Help implementing LinRegT interval on the TI-83 Plus

I need help coding the LinRegT-interval feature for my Statistic unit and finals. For context, my dumbass decide to save 40 bucks by buying a TI-83 Plus instead of a TI-84 statistic calculator. Because of this, there are many feature that I have to manually code into the program such as GOF test, T interval, and INV Chi. We are currently on the Regression lessons and was recently introduce the regression T-Interval procedure.

I used AI to code the exact code show in the images into the New Program button. After inputing the number in the two list, I run the program, inputted the list and was met with the err:Undefined. When I clicked on GOTO, it ended up on the *, next to the “a”. Can someone check if all the variables are defined, everything is correctly added and I am not missing anything.

If you need more information in order to help me, feel free to ask. (My grammar is buns 💔)

TI-Nspire CX II-T battery died suddenly right before exams - need URGENT help/advice

UPDATE: No further help needed, thanks! I'll try to borrow another calculator for the exam and buy a proper battery afterwards.

Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of a stressful situation and could really use some advice.

My TI-Nspire CX II-T suddenly stopped working properly this morning. The battery completely gave out. The weird thing is, it was already a bit problematic when I first bought the calculator, but I managed to fix it back then and it worked fine for the whole 2 years. I honestly didn't expect it to die on me right now, especially just before my exams.💀

Now the issue is: I'm in Poland, the battery (37L1200SPB) is basically impossible to get fast locally and online orders might not arrive before my math exam (May 14).

The calculator only works when plugged in, but that's not a real solution for exam conditions. The battery itself also feels like it may be swollen, so I'm assuming it's completely dead. I'm trying to figure out what my options are at this point. I was even considering desperate alternatives like third-party batteries or temporary fixes, but I'm not sure what's safe or even workable.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Is there any safe workaround to keep it working for a few days? Any fast sources for TI-Nspire CX II-T batteries in Europe/Poland? Or any emergency fixes that could at least get me through the exam?

I'd really appreciate any help or advice. I'm kind of stuck right now and running out of time.

Thanks in advance. 😭

I found this interesting specimen at the Sunday market.

I couldn't buy it, though, as the seller was asking too much for it, but I did get a photo of it.

What Calculator App Reigns Supreme!? HiPER vs PCalc vs Plus42

HiPER is such a great scientific calculator for pure capabilities, now of course you got PCalc's UI and integration with iOS software, but there's also Plus42's advanced RPN capabilities and HP's library of constants and other great resources, and it's basically an R47/C47 on a HP42s simulator. Let me know your thoughts down below.

So I have this old Shanghai calculator with new batteries put in and no obvious previous battery leak, what could he wrong?

After receiving this in an attic, this thing had an already chance but I still want to ask for your opinion on the matter.
