To the couple who turned up sick at Seaport Alamo last Saturday to see Project Hail Mary…

You absolutely worthless sacks of shit. You were both clearly sick yet you turned up anyway to watch a movie you could easily have seen once you weren’t fucking infested with whatever god forsaken virus you infected me (and probably others) with.

You couldn’t even be bothered with the half assed effort of putting on a mask. No you just HAD to come, order food, cover your empty plates with snotty tissues and then have the audacity to LEAN TOWARDS ME at times so you could be comfortable.

I just wanted a nice outing after getting a new job. After three years general life hell, I took myself out to the cinema as a treat. But oh no.

Now I’m fucking sick. But it’s not just that. My immune-compromised cat is sick. I just started a new job and that’s now been threatened because I’m barely able to do what’s needed on a tight deadline. My elderly mother has a bowling trip soon she has to fly for and you’ve put her at risk as well.

I’m not surprised you scuttled out so fast once the movie finished because you could tell I was getting pissed off at your despicable selfishness. And all for an $18 movie ticket.

There is a horrible bug going around and it’s not just another head cold.

PLEASE people. If you are sick, reschedule and STAY. THE FUCK. HOME.

Edit: I am as certain as I can be they did not have allergies. We all know the big difference in how ‘allergic runny nose’ and ‘I’m so fucking sick my snot has the viscosity of tar’ sounds. Stop it.

US electricity rates rose 15% to 53% since 2020 depending on where you live - 20 major utilities compared [OC]

I pulled EIA residential electricity price data (Table 5.6.A of the EIA Electric Power Monthly) across 20 of the largest US utilities to see how much rates have actually changed since 2020. The variation is wild.

What's in the chart: % rate increase 2020-2024, current rate in cents/kWh, current average monthly bill, and how many extra dollars per month customers are paying versus 2020.

What's driving the patterns:
New England (+48-53%) is the most extreme case and it's almost entirely a natural gas pipeline story. New England generates most of its electricity from gas but has barely any pipeline capacity to import it during peak winter demand. When gas prices spiked in 2021-2022, the region had nowhere to turn - Eversource and National Grid customers absorbed the full hit. PG&E customers are paying $67/mo more than in 2020 mostly for a different reason: billions in wildfire liability and underground line-burial costs, recovered from ratepayers over 20-30 years.
California (+38-50%) is a wildfire infrastructure story. PG&E and SCE are in the middle of decades-long programs to harden the grid against fire ignition. These capital costs are approved by the CPUC and recovered from ratepayers over 20-30 years - so this is baked in for a long time regardless of what gas prices do.
The South and Texas (+15-22%) held up best. Lower renewable transition pressure, less wildfire exposure, and generally less aggressive state clean energy mandates. The tradeoff is fewer rebate programs and less grid modernization investment.
The rate-per-kWh gap is the underappreciated number: PG&E customers pay 33¢/kWh while Austin Energy customers pay 11¢/kWh - a 3x multiplier on the economics of everything. A heat pump, solar array, or EV that pays back in 6 years in Northern California would take 18 years in Austin with the same equipment.

Notes on methodology:

  • EIA Table 5.6.A reports state-level residential averages, not utility-level. For utilities serving multiple states (Duke Energy, Dominion, National Grid), the figures are a weighted approximation across their service territory, not a precise utility-level figure. Utility-specific data would require pulling individual rate case filings from each state PUC, which are not centrally aggregated.
  • "All-in" means supply charge + delivery/distribution charge combined, which is what actually appears on a residential bill.
  • Bill increase figures are derived: if 2024 avg bill = $X and the increase was Y%, the 2020 baseline = $X / (1 + Y/100).

Source: EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A - Average Retail Price of Electricity by State (eia.gov/electricity/monthly). Chart built with React.

I put together EcoAudit to run energy analysis at the household level - it factors in your specific utility, local rebates, and home characteristics to show actual payback periods rather than national averages that don't apply to most people's situation.

2nd trip to Boston as a New Hampshirite

Went back on Easter, decent temperature with a very low cloud cover around 500ft

Kept to the inner city for the most part again, but honestly considering where I'm from, I can't get enough of exploring Boston

I will be back

The Boston Globe Cares About Your Privacy

This is why they sell and/or share your data with 998 companies. It's because they care so much that their caring overwhelmed the first 100 companies.

Something to consider when wondering whether or not they're a legitimate news source conducting legitimate business.

By comparison, the same warning message from NYPost mentions only 36 companies being sold or given your data. That means the Globe cares about your privacy 27x more than the NYPost.

Boston is finally going to repave Cleveland Circle

https://www.universalhub.com/2026/mbta-boston-planning-some-fixes-dangerous-cleveland-circle-roads-just

Only for a few months though, National Grid has to dig up the road to replace the gas mains, and they're not going to bother to repave the 200 feet of Beacon St east of the intersection because I guess it's too hard or something.

Oh and it's all going to be dug up again in 2028 and 2029 when the street running tracks get rebuilt for the Type 10s.

Has anyone else's Kindergartener (or 6/7/9th grader) NOT been placed in a BPS class yet even with early/priority lottery?

Hi All,

I'm at a loss with the ineptitude of BPS at this point.

We submitted (confirmed received) the application for our K2 bound child by BPS's priority reg deadline and heard nothing by 3/31 placement notification date. We contact the BPS Welcome center and come to find out they never pushed our registration to the lottery...that aside, they tell us "they'll take care of it" and we'll hear back by 4/8, hear nothing by 4/8...then they tell us we'll hear back by today 4/10 and nothing...even today they said "by end of day" and nothing.

Is anyone else currently dealing with this? I'm not even confident they knew about their "non push" of our child's application if we hadn't contacted them. I'm also not even confident they've proactively reached out to others impacted as they told us they found "several" other families in the same boat as us after they researched.

I'm about to go scorched earth Karen/Kyle on BPS by this point, I feel like we've been very patient with them but they're now past the point of anything reasonable.

Quick edit. Integrity capsule just splashed down. NASA sent their Artemis II mission from earth to around the moon and back faster than BPS has placed our kid in a class

House cleaning services in Boston - Recommendations?

We have a 1700 sq ft home and have been looking into biweekly house cleaning services in Boston. Our two long haired dogs that shed constantly and our cat make it so there's a never ending stream of hair that is very hard to keep up with. My wife is the pickier of the two of us and she didn't like the last cleaning company we used. Does anyone have a house cleaner they'd recommend in Boston? Is there anyone you like for house cleaning? Looking for someone affordable, high quality and reliable who shows up when they say. I realize affordable is subjective, but please just no one who charges $100 an hour
