I was gifted a mature 6"-8" axolotl and 55 gal long tank. Did some research using the pinned care guides here. Thank you all.

Temps. Levels from the API kit look perfect on every test She seems happy and swishes her gills around once every 5-6 seconds. Fasted during transport and has absolutely obliterated 4 whole earthworms in the last five days.

She has explored the tank bottom, but never really seems to swim up...

I would appreciate any tips, tricks, or suggestions.

AXOLOTL MIGHT BE SICK HELP!!!!

Frank has never had trouble eating and today he couldn’t. it almost looked like he was throwing up the worm. when he first gets the worm everything is normal and then it looks like he gags and the worm comes back up. tried cutting the worm more, didn’t work.

Live food that can be bought in large quantities?

im wondering if there is any live food that can be bought in large quantities. my current axolotl loves red wigglers but I can only buy them in packs of 24.

im just wondering if there's a live food that can be bought in a much higher quantity.

I ask because for my lizards, I can get insects in quantities of 100 or even more and id love to do that for red wigglers or something

Stardust just arrived this morning. She's so precious.

Got my second axolotl this morning. She's exploring and settling in. She's too cute not to show off. And a little silly.

Don't worry the worms aren't staying in with her. I just take a lot of photos around feeding time.

New owner with some questions

Just recently got our first axolotl. He came with a fully cycled tank, sand substrate, sponge filter and some artificial plants. We added one hide as well as a few more fake plants. I plan on adding some live floating plants as well. My concern is the tank that he came with is a 20 gallon long. I’d love to get a larger tank but the only spot we can keep him isn’t large enough for a 40G breeder. I’ve seen folks say the 29G is an option but it’s only taller, not longer. Also, in the few days we’ve had him he hasn’t been eating much. A few night crawlers and a couple of the lotl pebbles that were given to us. Is that normal? Maybe he’s just getting acclimated to his new surroundings? Any advice would be much appreciated

rescue axolotl

so I just took in this axolotl from a family member I know the tank is too small I’m working on getting her a 40 breeder this is what she had when I got her. She had two hides and a bare bottom so right now we’re working on buffing up her tank and any cold or low light plant recommendations are very appreciated. any tips or tricks about axolotl’s are very much welcome I do care for fish, but I have never had an axolotl or anything amphibian type. Her water is cold, low lighting and fine sand, but since her care was so bad before like water changes were very rare so I wanna make sure that she’s ok and there’s nothing currently wrong with her and as far as I’m aware, this is a female, but please let me know if it’s a male. I actually can’t really tell the difference. currently, I’m feeding her nightcrawler worms every 2 to 3 days and supplementing with blood worms as treats and I’m thinking maybe some other type of worm as a treat but let me know what you guys feed your axolotls

One year old axolotl gills turning dark

Is this coloration on her gills a bad sign? She is a GFP axolotl

I have anxiety… Advice?

I had a very hard time getting my tank to cycle before getting my Lotl… one of the reasons was over cleaning causing the cycle to crash and having to restart… so now it’s cycled and I just got our Lotl the other day… I’m paranoid about over cleaning and sending my tank cycle out of whack. But also don’t want to let the tank get too dirty either… Just kind of wondering how much vacuuming is too much? I feel like the tank looks dirty. I have a mix of live and fake plants.

Want to get in the hobby.

I wanted to get in the hobby but don't know where to start. Also don't want to torture the little guy with a poor life quality. What would be your recommendations for a budget friendly living environment without compromising on the animals health. I am open to trustable guides and videos. Thanks in advance!

I’m so confused

As you may deduce from the picture, this is a cycled, established 30 gallon tank of almost 3 years. I don’t do a full test super duper often maybe once or twice a week because I have had several tanks and once the levels are good I just let it go and keep an eye on nitrate. However as you can see all three levels are off, drastically in my opinion. I did a 50 change yesterday because the levels were so drastic. I’ve had this axolotl (baby hamdog sandwich jr) for a year and some change in this tank that WAS CYCLED!!! I added that piece of wood that’s behind him about a month ago I don’t know and don’t think that would be an issue and I baked it before I added it. In my opinion my axolotl does not look unhealthy, he flares up and gets purpley red in the gills at that time and gets super fluffy. He is active at night and swims well, eats well. I’m just so concerned about this. Please help!

I have some questions regarding our axolotl's low KH

I have some questions regarding our axolotl's low KH. I have been doing 25% water changes to lower our Axolotls nitrates as they were showing way too high. I was reading from the top of the test tube vials which darkens the colour, however the reading I was getting was looking like 160ppm. Now it is reading 40-80ppm, I think it is 40ppm.

I started having issues with the KH test bottle. Sometimes it would reading 0-1dkh (what I was thinking the water is) and other times it's reading way way higher (the tap water is typically 0-1dkh from a test I did in the past and now it's reading 13+ drops!) I think it is because I didn't let the test tubes dry in between chemicals, therefore the results are being skewed. I think the tank water is very low, potentially even 0dkh, after the water changes I did with our super low KH tap water.

I've read that the nitrogen cycle process eats up KH and a can cause a spike is ammonia and nitrite and a crash in PH. The way the tank typically gets cleaned is at using a net to swirl around and suck up the waste/food. I'm worried that this would cause a spike in ammonia and therefore get rid of the remaining KH buffer due to the nitrogen cycle increase from the excess ammonia and cause a PH crash/ammonia or nitrite spike. Is this true? Should it be cleaned in a less disruptive way? The siphon we have I previously hosed out with the outdoor hose, I later learned that the outdoor hose had been used for a job including a pesticide/herbicide/fungicide spray, I'm not sure which. A hose end sprayer was used, and I know there is a potential for the chemicals to get sucked back in. That was about 4 months prior and the hose had been used since however. Would the siphon be well and truly safe to use? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, I just don't know how easy these chemicals are to rinse away.

Should I continue with water changes to get the nitrates in the oranges not reds to ensure the Nitrates don't rise again, or should I focus on raising the GH and KH first? If I leave it too long before another W/C I don't want the Nitrates to rise too high and need to do even more water frequent water changes with such a low KH and GH.

My final question is, if the tap was treated with something to raise the KH, would it risk causing a swing and crash on low KH if the additive the municipal water supply used dropped down/wore off? (I have read that Soda Ash, which our municipal uses to raise PH does.)

I'm sorry if these were stupid questions again, and thank you so much for any advice in advance!!

Upgrading axolotl from 125L to 240L - safe move + seeded cycle advice?

Hi all,

I’ve just picked up a new tank upgrade for my axolotl, Squidge - going from a 125 litre (~33 US gallons) to a 240 litre (~63 US gallons).

This should be a much better setup overall - a significantly larger footprint, a more powerful filtration system, and (most importantly) a chiller. Even in the UK we get the occasional heatwave, and I’ve had to resort to using ice in the past, which I’d really like to avoid going forward for Squidge’s sake.

I’m looking for a bit of advice/reassurance on two things:

1. Moving Squidge safely
My plan is to gently transfer them into a plastic tub with a lid (with air holes - not attempting an axolotl escape speedrun), then move them across once everything is ready.

  • Does that sound like the best approach?
  • Any tips for minimising stress or keeping temperature stable during the move?

2. Setting up the new tank with seeded media
I won’t be able to fully cycle the new tank over several weeks, but I will be transferring:

  • Established filter media
  • Decor
  • Around 100 litres (~26 US gallons) of water from the current tank

The new tank will be bare-bottom, so no substrate is being moved over.

I’m hoping this effectively carries over the cycle, but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything obvious. I’ll have Prime and axo safe water conditioner on hand and a backup tub ready just in case anything spikes.

  • Does this sound like a solid plan?
  • Anything else I should be doing to keep things stable?

I want to keep Squidge as safe and stress-free as possible, so any advice or “watch out for this” tips would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance from me - Squidge is, of course, blissfully unaware of the logistical operation being planned.

Mid Cycle Questions

So I overdosed my ammonia by A LOT a month ago. the nitrate is going up like crazy now. two days ago it was 10-20 PPM and now it is 40 PPM. I haven't added any ammonia since the initial dosage. A few questions, should I add Ammonia when it goes to light green? it seems like I'm getting 10 ppm Nitrate per day so I think I am about ready to order the axolotl? Lastly, should I do a water change to lower nitrate even tho the tank is fishless? Thanks!
