Absolute win with a Qatar booking

Had an email from Qatar that they’d released a bunch of reward seats. I have a stack of Avios from a BA credit card and was able to book myself and my SO, in Business Class, London Heathrow to Auckland return for £1,900 + 538,000 Avios early next year.

Absolutely thrilled 🤩 I’d resigned myself to not being able to get the two of us on one reward flight booking.

Should note I had to book London/Doha and Doha/Auckland separately as the full trip wasn’t available in one go

Credit Card Discussion

Hi guys, young professional here looking to maximise Avios gains and wanted some advice on what direction makes the most sense for me.

I’m based in the UK, earn around £30k/year, and currently have the Amex Gold card. I’ve had it for just over a year and through referrals + spending I now sit at just over 90,000 Membership Rewards points. I plan to convert all of these to Avios points.

I’m now debating whether Gold is still the best long-term setup for me, or whether I should move toward a more Avios-focused card strategy.

Current options I’m considering:

  • Keep the Amex Gold and stay as is.
  • Switch to the free BA Amex and purchase the Barclaycard Avios Plus.

My yearly card spend is roughly £16k-17k and I plan to only use the points on British Airways travel.

From what I can tell, the Barclaycard Avios Plus seems stronger for pure Avios earning, especially with wider Mastercard acceptance, but I’m unsure what makes most sense at my income/spend level or if there are other alternative combinations/elements to consider.

Would appreciate any advice from people in similar situations or anyone deeper into the points game.

Thanks

How To Optimise Points Most Efficiently

Hi guys

I appreciate there’s countless other posts querying this but I have some quite narrow wishes for my points which I would massively appreciate any help with. I’m pretty new to Amex and flight upgrades more generally. If anyone can help me I’d be more than happy to send flowers as a thank you!

Me and my gf are planning on going to South Africa in the new year and i will be proposing to her on this holiday.

Edit. further context: Looking v quickly a London-Cape Town return flight in Jan is £700-£1k pp in economy. Premium economy c.£1.5k-£2k. Biz £3k-£4k.

In an ideal world, I’d really like to get us 2x business class seats from London to Cape Town including return as cheap as possible, ideally by just using points. 1st class would obviously be amazing but I suspect that’s a non starter!

  1. What is the most efficient way of utilising points? Do I book flights economy and pay using my Amex through their system, and then use the points to upgrade direct with the airline?
  2. Is there a particular airline that converts points best on this route? I’d be open to a quick economy flight to e.g. Schipol if it enables us to get the upgrade for the bulk of the journey.
  3. Do I bother getting my partner to get a BA free Amex for the companion voucher? Or is it too late/incompatible with what I want.
  4. Would anyone recommend using the points for economy seats but I bid for an upgrade closer to the time.
  5. Does anyone have any suggestions to boost my points easily/cheaply. I’ve thought about referring her to my gold Amex to get some bonus points. I also have a limited company for any consulting I do. So could I get better referral points by referring myself or her for a gold business card? Any other ideas would be great!

Any other suggestions I really welcome, if anyone can help me I owe you big time!

Thanks

Does anyone know how soon the Barclaycard yearly spending tracker updates? I have 2 days to hit my 20k target (which I think I may have hit today) but my spending target hasn’t updated since last week.

Does anyone know if it should still count in my 12 month period if the tracker updates a bit later as I have spent the money within the 12 months

Where have the JAL business seats gone?

My usual way to spend Avios is to get JAL business seats from Vancouver to Tokyo. Usually have to book 255 days in advance (or whatever the limit is on the site). This year, I’ve noticed that no seats were available on that flight on any day. Then a few weeks ago, there are lots of flights available with reward seats, but only on Economy.

I’m trying to get business seats on that route in spring 2027. Anyone else looking for JAL business? Any luck?

Edit: I’m using BA to try and get these seats. Is it possible that they would be available under another program that I can transfer Avios to (ie QR, IB, etc)?

I have seen people had this issue before but I do check my names/email/DOB and they are exactly identical.

Contact BA but no response yet, is this possible because I joined and created BA account only for a week?

Much appreciated for any inputs!

I booked several Qatar first and business class tickets but still have close to 1.4m points. Other than premium flight tickets from Qatar airways, are there any other use case of avios points?

I also booked some a380 first class ticket with layover in Qatar in mid summer. With current war and surge in fuel cost, what are the chances of me getting "Qatared" from a380 first class ticket? Are there many canceled flights in and out of doha from Europe currently?

Thanks

I am curious to hear how often people are successful when calling up the hotline 355 days in advance to book the most popular seats- I.e business to Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore etc with the companion voucher

How many people are actually after these seats on a daily business? And how much off peak vs peak and weekday vs weekend plays into it if anyone has enough experience doing them.

I'm trying to see if i understood this correctly. Since the bilt transfer bonus is going to be live tomorrow (or it is already) I'm trying to see if I can transfer about 100k points to the British Airways Club (Avios is the currency used by this club and other partner airlines like Qatar) and then either transfer them out to Qatar's balance or should also be able to use it directly to make a booking at Qatar.... right?

Been collecting Avios for a few years and for the longest time I thought it was just flights, hotels, Uber etc. Didn’t even realise BA Shopping existed until recently.

Once I found out you could earn points at places like Boots, ASOS, Selfridges and loads of other retailers I already use, I was honestly annoyed at how much I’d been missing out on.

Biggest issue for me though — even when you know about it, you have to remember to activate it before checkout every time… and I kept forgetting.

So I ended up building a small extension for myself that:

  • detects when you’re on a supported retailer
  • shows the Avios rate
  • reminds you if you get to checkout without activating

Curious — does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Happy to share it if anyone’s interested, just didn’t want to spam links here.

Have a Reward Flight Booking with BA. Its obviously linked it to my BA account at booking.

Would like to credit the flight to my RJ account.

Have seen this is possible with other types of ticket but wondering if its possible to do it on a Reward Flight and how best to go about doing this?

Its a business class ticket so if the option is there could I ask to change it while in the lounge?

Hey all, got Amex gold card and managed to rack up 70k points almost close to a year of having it. I didn’t really know what to do with it until the other day I looked at Virgin Atlantic for points use and saw that I could get flights (2 me and wife) to Seoul and back for 30k points and £550, which to me seems like a crazy deal. But from what I can see most people only use points for upgrades and not for things like this, any reason why? Or have I understood something wrong and the deal isn’t what I think it is

Thanks!!

Have booked an outbound to KUL using upgrade voucher and now ready to book the return. With the seat on my desired day being released at 01.00am, what is the best number to call on? I'm based in the UK so I believe this is the US number, if so any tips on when to call, or best options to pick and get through to an agent quicker. Thanks a lot.

Is there any way to preview how much specific flights would cost in Avios for Aer Lingus?
Like how you can preview prices on the Avios app for BA and Iberia’s website

I have an account on BA and Finnair and they are both linked but when I click transfer it loads for 5 seconds and then crashes like this.

I have tried different browsers but same result.

I have many avios in Iberia, however when I try to reserve a hotel from their page or app, it send me to booking.com where I am unable to use avios to book a hotel (you can win avios by paying real money though), I tried avios.com too but it redirects to aviosandmoney.iberia.com that logs me out... and if I click login it goes to iberia (same problem A).

I tried linking Iberia to BA to pass my avios to a decent page, but since the Iberia page is wrong. It recorded my middle name as the second last name... and it doesn't link ( I submitted a correction ticket a few days ago and got no response)

I hate Avios... but any help will be greatly appreciated (already call them like 5 times with no luck fixing my problem)

1 or 2 nights. Ideally warm. Has to be a weekend term time/ school holiday (teacher life 🙄). Celebrating 40th & 50th. Not big into museums/ art but like outdoors/ sports. Ideas on a postcard - or below! Open to all points/ part points - whatever works out best!

Edited to add based in London!

Hi, I’m flying with CX in PE (class E) one way and regular economy (class N) the other way. As I want to earn avios instead of Asia Miles, I have identified that QR is the best for the PE leg since they offer a 110% mile multiplier, which is more than BA, Iberia or Finnair at 100%. For N however, QR is at 0% and BA/Iberia are at 25%. Anyone knows what Finnair has for this fare? All the economy letters are at 50% on their website but N is not listed so is it 0% also? If there’s a better way to get more avios from that trip, would be interested to here also!
