r/Yellowknife

Homeless people everywhere. I go downtown to Boston pizza, they're everywhere. I go on Franklin, all I smell is piss near the entrance of the "mall"

I go to Walmart, there they are. Shoppers, there too.

I go to my dentist and there are shameless people screaming at eachother on the sidewalks. Filth everywhere.

Trash everywhere. Water leaking from buildings with no proper gutters in place.

I saw at least 3 roads that were flooded with water with no workers there to fix the problem.

Why is this city like this? I'm so disgusted to be here and can't wait to leave. Both liquor stores are littered with people standing around outside waiting to harass people.

I go to chateau nova, some drunk lady is being disrespectful to the front staff.

I go to esso, trash everywhere. Doors broken. Homeless people lingering about.

Fuck, this place. People who love yellowknife are hardcore and very strong. I could not deal with living in a place like this.

Yellowknife Northern Lights tour

Hi! I know it is still too early to plan this but my friend and I are going to Yellowknife on January2027.

I just wanna ask what are the best and trusted tour companies where we can book a tour package (accommodation, northern lights tour, airport-hotel transfers and winter gear rentals)?

I saw this one company and wanted to check if anyone tried it as well 😄 Thank youu!

So I'm setting up a Starlink (actuated model), it is supposed to go on our roof, though in the manual the temperature range is between -30 °C and 50 °C. Anyone here living in Yellowknife with a functional Starlink during the winter season?

Hello! I am visiting with a small group from Ontario. We are here through a University program and we only have this weekend free to experience Yellowknife. I am a mature student and mom, who very rarely gets an opportunity to travel and I am so excited to see a part of Canada I've never seen before.

Last years students got to participate in schools where students were being taught skills like skinning animals and tanning. Unfortunately our timing this year has us missing these unique learning experiences. We seem to be here at the time of year where most winter activities have ended and the summer ones haven't begun. I was really looking for forward to learning new skills or having experiences in a location I've never been (and may never have the chance to again).

We will be touring a few museums, hiking, and driving to see the lights but I really want to have a unique experience while I'm here. I thought fishing would be fun but I've heard ice fishing is done for the season, dog sledding too. I would hate to come all this way for a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and to leave without trying anything.

Does anyone have a suggestion of something we could try or someone we could contact that would offer an interesting experience unique to Yellowknife?

Thank you in advance! Everyone is so helpful and kind here! We are enjoying the city already from what we have been able to see so far!

Hey – I’m a local who just moved back after being away for a while.

I’m trying to meet new people, and expand my circle, I’ve joined the gym and trying to find some sense of community. What are some fun things to do on a weekend around here? (Other than the range/ravens) 😂 Any good hangout spots or activities where it’s easy to connect with others? Game nights or anything?

Open to pretty much anything – outdoor stuff, casual groups, classes, coffee spots, volunteering, you name it. I’m also a woman in her 30’s

Thanks in advance!

Best gym for me?

Hi all,

I recently moved to Yellowknife and I’m looking to get back in the gym. I know YK has a few, I prefer ones with lots of machines (cables, pec fly, curl machine, shoulder press etc) was wondering which one would be best suited for me. I know a lot of gyms go cardio heavy and that’s not what I need.

Thanks !

I'm a solo dude working with the GNWT (so I have a good work reference and steady income) and I want to rent a place for myself so I can have some personal space. Ideally, it won't soak up half of my monthly income, but I'll take what I can get. I tried to join the Facebook YK Accommodations group but I didn't get approved.

Any ideas? Is it just "go through northview"? Maybe you happen to know someone looking to rent out a place at a reasonable price and just wants a steady no stress tenant? 🙂‍↕️

Given what is going on with Ekati right now, I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions on the mine, companies, history etc. I’m sure some of you worked there at one point.

Hi, my husband and I moved here 5 years ago, before in BC. Him from USA and me from Poland, we are looking to make community in Yellowknife. We found the American in military are not very friendly to him here but Canadians are not very either. I’ve gone to church and no other ladies as expected what is there to suggest.

Hi everyone, I would like to visit Yellowknife to see the city and also hope to see the Aurora Borealis. I’m planning to go for a few days starting on September 11th 2026. I understand it’s difficult to predict that far ahead but I’m wondering if it’s a good time to see the Aurora? Has anyone seen the Aurora in September before? Or would you recommend a different time to go? And if anyone knows a good area to see them please let me know I am open to suggestions, and also any suggestions for fun things to do, any historical sites, and any of your favourite restaurants. Thank you very much! :)

Hello, I recently moved to Yellowknife, and I'm trying to get some prescriptions from my old doctors renewed. So far the only places I've been able to find that I could go to are Yellowknife Primary Care or the Range Lake Clinic. Does anyone know if either of those would be able to refill them for me easily?
