VR360 for XREAL glasses! Try it now! [ScreenLab XR v0.6.1]

Hi everyone,

I'm proud to present VR360 video (and photo) viewer in ScreenLab XR v0.6.1 (formerly nroro Shader app).

Now, most XR glasses can watch VR video! Please check out the demo!

  • It supports XREAL Air 1 / Air 2 / Air 2 Pro / Ultra / One / One Pro / 1s and others
  • Multiple VR format supported: YouTubeEAC, EAC360, EAC180, Fisheye, photo, and more!
  • Support SBS input/output
  • Support mono input/output <-- this is super cool when paired with REAL3D!! Any mono VR360 can become 3D world, not just a flat spherical view. I really want to see this running on Aura 70° FOV at 60fps.

Remarks:

  • YouTube app forces interactive 3D control instead of raw 3D file, so you may want to use NewPipe to view it. (Without ScreenLab, the video may look like a distorted fisheye image. But when viewed through ScreenLab on XR glasses, it becomes a VR 3D view with head rotation support.)
  • Example of YoutubeEAC (VR Algorithm 0) is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR8ZtyhSDYw (top-bottom panorama strip)
  • Example of Equirectangular360 (VR Algorithm 1) is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQKpQiDq3sk (oval curvy fisheye distortion)

Parameters:

  • Input SBS Dual -> please set to 0 if input is mono eye (eg. above YouTube video), or 1 if input is SBS
  • Input Zoom Level -> on my S24u + XOP combination, the optimal value is 1.220. If you see black strip, try increasing the value. If you see overlapping world, try decreasing the value.
  • Output SBS Dual -> 0 if you want to use it with REAL3D or non-3D, and 1 if you want Half/Full SBS mode
  • VR Algorithm -> 0=YoutubeEAC, 1=Equirectangular360, etc. Feel free to raise a request if you want more!

FAQ: If your glasses gyro direction feels wrong, please check my other post about tuning the gyro axis mapping.

Please help to try and provide your feedback~❤️

I'd also love to know:

  • What VR videos will you be watching?
  • Where do you usually get VR360 content?
  • What VR formats or other features should ScreenLab XR support next?

Real3D is forreal

Got the 1S this weekend (previous were the nreal air 1). I'm blown away, just wish they were smaller and not as bulky like the air1's (just about the same size and bulkyness, actual frames are thinner tho). But yes, they are a worthy upgrade.

Now, Real3D is the real deal. I'm not sure what kind of witchcraft xreal has cooked up, but if you ever had a chance to use the Nintendo 3DS 3D feature, its that but for everything you look at. I was confused as to what this "3D" feature actually worked with. Maybe for 3D movies, makes sense right? But no, its for that and anything else you can watch. Its witchcraft, and some might say its a gimmick, but legitimately it actually makes me want to use the glasses even more for media consumption use. This is an experience that I can't really get anywhere else, not even with my Quest3, an actual vr headset. Legit makes this purchase that much worthwhile since I originally just wanted to upgrade for 3DoF. Highly recommended!

3 DoF Anchor/Follow on Xreal Air 1/2/Ultra/etc. (ScreenLab XR v0.6.0)

Hi everyone👋

It's a big step! ScreenLab XR (formerly nroro Shader) can now support 3 DoF stabilization!

[ How to use ]

  1. Download and open the app, connect the glasses
  2. Tap Anchor or Follow (under 3 DoF (experimental) category), allow screen casting to the glasses
  3. Try turning your head, and you may tap Anchor or Follow again to adjust parameters, or explore other features and mix them.

By right, Xreal One Series should work with default settings (I only tested with my One Pro. I don't have other devices). For other models/brands, they may need further "Sensor Mapping" (Tap gear button next to 3 DoF category > Sensor Mapping) and follow the tuning guide in the comment.

Let me know your thoughts! This is the first public version for 3 DoF, and I will keep improving it, and also support VR360 video and more!!

Please also help to comment your glasses model, and your tuning settings/mapping that make it works, so that others with same model can follow yours!

Thanks for trying it out, and hope the app is useful❤️

What Xreal products works well with normal glasses?

I have glasses (I can't see far away without them) and I have been using Quest 3 VR and I have no any issues with using those with my glasses. Anyway, there seems to be different kind of views of if Xreal AR glass works with glasses or not, so I ask here.

What models and products of Xreal can be used on top of my normal glasses? I do not want to get lenses what are made for my eyesight since that will change anyway in years, so it would be better to have glasses what can be with current glasses.

Note that I do not care if it looks dork to use those since I normally use anyway this kind of stuff at home or when visiting to my mom's place. Is any of current models wearable with glasses without having issues them falling off from head, scratching the lens and so on?

better practice &str or String as function arg

Hello,

what is a better practice? and why? Assume the key I want to insert is available in String type initially.

use std::collections::HashMap;

    let mut map = HashMap::<String, u32>::new();

    // a fct to add a key,value to my hashmap (I know it doesn't need to be implemented in this example but in my use case it does).

    fn add_pair_v1(map: &mut HashMap::<String, u32>, s:String, u:u32){
      map.insert(s,u);
    }

    //or

    fn add_pair_v2(map:&mut HashMap::<String, u32>, s:&str, u:u32){
      map.insert(s.to_string(),u);
    }

Thank you !

Beam pro or Neckband pro?

I recently got a couple pairs of Xreal one pro with xreal eye for my wife and I. Now I am trying to decide what device or ecosystem to get for my wife. I have seen video of people pairing the pro one with the viture neckband.

The reason why I went with the xreal one pro instead of viture glasses is because it seems like the overall user experience is better and stable. This ease of use and stability is important for my wife. She will mainly be playing pc games and also interacting with apps on her iPhone, you know the usual scrolling apps.

So my question is, do you all think the beam pro is the way to go? Or is the viture neckband pro a viable option. I also have an inair pod on the way for use with my viture luma ultras. So I will have an opportunity to play around with pairing the pod with the xreals as well.

I feel like there's so much uncertainty in this space. I'm still questioning if the xreal one pro was the way to go for her.

Hey XREAL fam 👋

Refresh rate is something we don’t always notice… until we do.

Right now, most use cases go up to 90 or even 120Hz(while some modes like REAL 3D still run at lower refresh rates (though we’re working on improving that).

🎮 What refresh rate feels “good enough” for you in AR glasses? What refresh rate do you usually use?

👇 Leave a comment and let us know your thoughts!

🎁 As usual, one random commenter next Monday will win some XREAL swag 😉

Guess it was just a matter of time - Nreal (!) Air

I've had them for several years now and plan to use them for many more.

So what's everybody's favorite way to repair this? Wanted to give superglue a try but maybe some people had bad experiences or better solutions for long term use.

An engineer's personal view on the ideal AR glasses

Currently, AR glasses have significant limitations for everyday use, and their current niche is more entertainment (video) than useful. Here, I'd like to describe how I see their use as an engineer.

  1. All glasses should have a single, open protocol and data transfer drivers. Any developer should be able to write a program in their favorite programming language to transmit video to the glasses and read data from them. Perhaps a new protocol for transmitting virtual space (likely similar to RDP) should be developed.

  2. The glasses shouldn't have expensive, high-performance chips (where are you going to put the heat from the OLED and CPU?). If the glasses are accidentally crushed, it shouldn't significantly impact the user's budget when buying new ones.

  3. It would be great to have Wi-Fi 7+ built into the glasses in addition to the wired version, but if this creates unnecessary heat or poses health problems, then only the wired version should be used.

  4. The glasses should have a separate cooling circuit/channels for the sensors to avoid overheating the forehead and eyebrow area during prolonged wear. Perhaps a piezoelectric fan would improve the situation without significantly increasing the weight (but what about vibration?).

  5. The glasses should have bone conduction speakers instead of regular speakers. People around me shouldn't hear my sound.

  6. A large FOV is great, but only with a high PPD for comfortable text processing. The PPD in the center can be higher than the PPD at the periphery.

  7. The glasses should have eye tracking for simple hands-free operation and cryptographic security based on retinal scanning.

  8. The glasses should have a noise-canceling microphone so that the other person can hear us clearly.

  9. The glasses should have stereo cameras and be able to output real-time video to the USB-C port, as well as sensor data.

  10. It should be possible to adjust the distance between the eyes and the glasses. For example, in Xreal One, I can't move the glasses closer than the nose pads allow.

An external computing unit, I'd call it a cyberdeck 😄

I see two development paths here.

  1. Ideally, we should get rid of it and move toward the concept of multiple cyberdecks depending on the situation: one cyberdeck at the work PC, another cyberdeck in the car, etc.

Or 2. Have a simple cyberdeck without bells and whistles like cameras, displays, etc. Its purpose is to save the user's application state, store data (for example, with the ability to install NVMe drives)

and (most importantly) serve as a hub for connecting to other cyberdeck stations.

It should have several USB-C ports that will allow you to connect both simple HID devices and complex ones that will transmit images.

For example, I'm working on a PC and connected to it via a cyberdeck. Through my glasses, I can see my monitors, which I previously set up for this workspace. Workspaces are always saved.

In another situation, I'm driving a car and connecting to the car's PC. With my glasses, I can see all my car's cameras, navigation, and other apps that enhance driving comfort and safety. It's important to note that the glasses should be synchronized with the car's position, for example, using a compass, so that when turning, I have full 3DoF/6DoF resolution inside the car, rather than a fixed image in front of my eyes.

When I'm shopping, I only have the basic cyberdeck running. For example, I want to see price comparisons on products. To reduce the load on the basic cyberdeck, it can transmit data to my home workstation for AI processing and return the results, or to a paid provider's cloud for the same calculations.

For fast and convenient connections and disconnections, USB-C should have a single magnetic connection standard.

Perhaps in some places, USB-C can be replaced with Ethernet.

We need to strive to control virtual space using controller gloves. Gloves can be made using magnetic encoders (such as the AS5600) with attachments near the finger joints. This will ensure high precision and relative compactness.

Let me remind you separately that Linux became very popular, in part, because it was open and everyone could customize it for their own needs.

My hiking setup is complete

My daily step goal is 10k, but I generally hit 12-15k, with a stride length of 80cm meaning I tend to hit 10km distance. Depending on the day, most of that is walking outside in nearby forests and whatnot, especially on weekends. After 5+ years of that I've run out of audio books and got the Xreals to watch videos instead. It works well, but I've had to gradually tweak and mod the setup in various ways. This is what I currently have:

  • Xreal One Pro M with silicon ear hooks (1) and jawbreaker nosepad (2)
  • Alpaka Modular Sling V2 with some essentials in the inner pocket, Beam Pro in the outside magnetic pocket (flap tucked away) (3), and either 500ml Memo Bottle A5 water bottle (5) or mini umbrella (6) depending on the weather - also in the inner pocket. I can also use it for a power bank if needed.
  • The sling's shoulder strap is modified with anti-slip tape (4) to control position on shoulder and a velcro padding thing I have on my chest (instead of the shoulder where it's intended to be). There's an attachment ring for a Nite Ize S-biner I hot glued to the Xreal cable as a strain reliever (7) and a elastic hair band (8) that I can hang the glasses from. There's also a Satechi Media Button Bluetooth remote (9) for controlling playback.

The Beam Pro is too big to comfortable sit in my pocket on walks, so this puts it out of the way while making it easier to access and providing a lot of other utility.

We have to talk about it ! https://prodocktive.com/
I just had a demonstration of this and it looks amazing ! Obviously it will be limited because it is iOS, however it does look great and I just hope this will dynamise the competition to escalate on Android. What do you guys think? The approach is different than InfiniteX2P

XREAL Accessory Sharing

My fully kitted-out XREAL device, the XREAL 1S, is fitted with all my upgraded accessories: an anti-slip weight-reduction mod, a sound concentrator, and a heat-insulating bracket.

The anti-slip weight-reduction accessory greatly eases pressure on the nose pads. The sound concentrator works amazingly well — it boosts volume by a huge margin and delivers much better bass performance.

Even if you turn the built-in glasses volume all the way up, it’s loud enough for noisy environments. But cranking the volume to the device’s maximum limit causes unpleasant distortion and ruins the listening experience, not to mention severe sound leakage. That’s why I use this sound concentrator accessory.

As for the heat-insulating bracket, it physically keeps my forehead completely separated from the glasses’ heat-emitting area. No matter how I adjust and wear the glasses, my skin never touches the hot zones at all.

Over engineering

Have you ever started building something by accident that solves a problem that eveyone has been having. I live on a fixed income and have fallen for the use of ai.

I run Hermes locally on a Mac mini M4 Pro 64GB. I only use open source programs. I have three different projects I am working on. A dashboard that is easy for myself to use. I am dyslexic and have left side motor skill issues. I want to find a clear STT and TTS open source projects on GitHub. That would make life easier in my use of AI.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

No matter how much I babied them, they all broke, always in the same space. Maybe it's just my huge noggin. I dunno. But either way, I need a new pair of wearable monitors and figure the best place to get (as close as possible to) unbiased opinions on alternatives would be here.

I don't use (nor care about) AR, VR, DoF, or any of that. All I want is a big screen TV strapped to my head for movies and gaming that isn't going to break within months. I have crap eyesight, so ideally it'd be one that I could adjust without needing to order prescription inserts.

Thanks
