Hello. I have just bought this Opel Meriva A, with a 1.6 petrol engine, year of manufacture 2004, automatic transmission. Can you help me what oil should I use for the engine? and do these 1.6 petrol engines consume oil?

Is the MK1 still the best-looking Astra? This 1983 example makes a strong case.

Spotted this 1983 Astra at a car event and couldn’t stop looking at it. Feels weirdly refreshing seeing a car without massive screens and aggressive styling everywhere. Would you still daily-drive something like this now?

JR3 on Astra G OPC

Hi everyone,

I’m considering a set of Japan Racing JR3 for my Opel Astra G Caravan OPC and I’d like to check fitment before buying.

Current wheels are OEM snowflakes: 17x7.5 ET47 with 215/45 R17 tyres.

The JR3 specs are 17x8 ET35, 5x110 (dual drilled 5x110 / 5x114.3).

On paper they should sit about 18 mm further out compared with the OEM wheels, with around 6 mm less inner clearance.

Has anyone here run 17x8 ET35 on an Astra G / Astra G OPC?

The seller had them fitted on a Golf IV, but I know that doesn’t necessarily translate to the Astra.

If anyone has photos or firsthand experience, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Head up if you own or buying New Vauxhall Corsa - Issues Breaking Down and Going into Limp Mode

If anyone is thinking about buying a post-2019 Vauxhall Corsa, especially the 1.2 PureTech models, seriously think twice before committing to one of these wet belt engines. This is NOT a minor issue or something that only happens occasionally the wet belt WILL eventually begin degrading inside the engine oil, shedding rubber into the oil system, blocking the oil pickup and causing constant low oil pressure warnings, limp mode, breakdowns and eventually catastrophic engine damage if not caught early.

The affected Corsas are mainly the 2019–2023 Vauxhall Corsa models using the 1.2 PureTech / 1.2 Turbo engines, including both manual and automatic versions. Once the belt starts breaking apart, the repair bill becomes ridiculous. In many cases it ends up needing a full engine rebuild or replacement which can easily cost £5,000+ literally half the value of the car. It honestly is not worth it.

I have the 2020 manual and my friend has the 2021 automatic and we BOTH had the exact same issue. Unfortunately she couldn’t find a mechanic who properly understood the problem and ended up getting quoted crazy prices. Places like Halfords and some larger garages can charge 3–4x more than a good local mechanic, and even then there’s no guarantee they actually know how to properly work on these engines.

If you already own one, your best options are:
- Service it VERY regularly (every 4–6k miles max)
- ONLY use the exact correct oil specification
- Replace the wet belt early
- Or honestly sell it before the issues begin

If you’re buying any modern car with a wet belt engine, I’d strongly recommend researching the engine properly beforehand and looking into common owner issues because this problem isn’t limited to just Vauxhall.

For anyone around Manchester dealing with this issue, I can recommend:
Car Care Centre, 46 Birch Lane, Manchester, M13 0NN . Ask for Yusef. He sorted mine for around £800 and I’ve had no issues since. I now go back every 9–12 months or around every 5–6k miles for servicing which is FAR cheaper than ending up needing another engine. Just sharing this because a lot of people are stuck with these cars, don’t know what’s causing the issue and end up paying thousands unnecessarily.

What’s most frustrating is that Vauxhall/Corsa owners were raising concerns about these engines for years before the issue was properly acknowledged, and unfortunately people are still ending up stuck paying thousands for repairs on cars that shouldn’t be failing this early.

Astra K cooling

I've always driven fast and used to rally on roads and stages. Part of my commute is a twisty B road where I can give it some beans and I've noticed that on the rare times that I get to glance at the dash, the coolant temp has dropped.

Is this accurate because it goes down to about a quarter and I'm raging the engine? 1.4 SRi turbo.

The Vauxhall Viva, still a classic after all these years.

Found this photo and had to share it here. There’s something about the simple design of the Viva that just works, especially in white. Does anyone else have a soft spot for these? My family used to have one back in the day and I still think they’re one of the best-looking cars Vauxhall ever made.

Can anybody help me my friend has just picked up his new Vauxhall frontier and only received 1 fob key that works and one that only open car on passenger side but all this does is set alarm off on car is this car not supposed to have to sets that can be used to drive the car thanks for any advice

Reversing Camera Failed on 2020 Corsa-e

As the title describes, the reversing camera on my 2020 Corsa E has stopped working. I'm wondering if this is a common fault and if the likely culprit is a faulty camera module or control module. I understand a definitive answer requires fault codes and investigation but before that I wanted to check on the experience of others. Although an electric vehicle I appreciate this is likely the same system across a range of models.

**Apologies for the long post, but trying very hard to not spiral by focussing on the worst case scenario!!!!!**

I'm a little concerned about something my local garage has just discovered with my newly purchased Vivaro (68 plate) and I'm looking for any insight to tell me how worried I should be.

I bought this van from a dealer with a very good reputation. I am very risk averse when it comes to big purchases like this, and this is my first van so I spent a lot of time ensuring the dealership I was buying from was trustworthy.

The van came with a full and excellent service and MOT history. All minor faults addressed immediately and, on paper, clearly well looked after with frequent maintenance.

Straight away I noticed the van said AdBlue level 0%. I topped it up and did some reading and concluded that it may have just run empty in the past and just needed the sensor resetting or something - no major problem.

I then had one episode where the ignition was a bit sluggish to start, which Google indicated was likely a glow plug issue.

Finally, veeeery slowly a fault light crept in. I saw it on day 1 but it was so faint I honestly thought it was light from the other illuminated panel displays (like the speedometer) leaking over into the fault and ESC parts. It wasn't until I felt it be a little looser to control on the motorway and the light started becoming more pronounced that I realised it was an accurate fault warning.

I spoke to the dealer I bought it from and they said 'yep, no problem, get it booked into your local garage and send us the quote and we'll see about getting it fixed under your warranty'. Wonderful. Very reassuring response!

Well! I dropped the van off today and have just received a phone call that I don't like the sound of at all. I'm trying very hard to not panic and stay calm, but given how long I spent finding this van and how terrified I was of spending thousands on a write off, I'm desperately seeking some input!!!

The garage has said that when they plug in their diagnostic computer thing, the van shows no faults. Well that's obviously not right as I filled the AdBlue tank myself and the ESC fault light is clearly on now and the van handles like the ESC function has turned off. When they try to go into the AdBlue module(?) itself, they immediately get shut out of the system; there's no communication from the AdBlue module whatsoever. With the rest of the modules the van says everything's working exactly as it should be, no problems at all!

The Worrier in me is trying very hard to not jump to the conclusion that this is absolutely a suspicious and sinister discovery. For example, someone tampering with the wiring to cover up a number of faults, etc. I'm waiting to hear back from the dealer but the Vauxhall garage I called immediately said they can't say what the problem might be without inspecting it themselves. They've said it could be something as simple as a disconnected wire, but they can't rule out tampering / conman sales technique without seeing it.

I don't know what I'm hoping to get from this post!! It would be lovely if 100 people came forward and told me that they had the same problem and every single one was found to be a loose wire and it's not possible to tamper with a van in this way!!! But I'm very aware I likely will not get that answer. Please can someone tell me anything ??!!! Like I said, this is my first van so I am in no way an expert, so any and all input from anyone who knows more than me is appreciated. Even if it is bad news (like telling me this is a common conman trick), it'll help prepare me for what to expect and whether or not I need to go in hard and fast to get my money back safely.

Hi all.

Sorry if this is similar to other posts. Just need some help identifying the potential cause.

2012 Corsa, Ecoflex, Petrol, 1.4, 76k miles, brand new battery.

Struggles in the mornings to start.

Sometimes it takes 2 turns or 5. And it will sometimes, not always, conk out when starting up like this.

Everything sounds normal after about a minute. Well, as normal as a Vauxhall can sound.

When I drive about, stop off, somewhere and start it up, it has no issues on the first turn of the key. Just usually over night/next day.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And sorry if this is a repetitive kind of post.

Keyword in there is sale - so no screwdrivers in to the tank etc.

Another problem I have is that it's a full tank too. Isn't that like 56 litres or something? It'll be over 50 litres anyway.

Easiest option is to just sell it as is, with the full tank, but as my other car is a diesel I'd rather not. I'd rather put the fuel in to that one & I've already had wasters getting in touch.
