Slenderman Deserves a Proper Horror Reimagining

With projects like The Backrooms bringing internet horror back into the spotlight again, I honestly think Slenderman still has a lot of untapped potential if handled as atmospheric psychological horror instead of relying mostly on jump scares.

The original Slenderman image and internet mythology genuinely terrified people back in the day because of the mystery, analog horror feel, and constant sense of dread surrounding the character. I feel like a modern reinterpretation focused on suspense, isolation, and creeping fear could actually work today.

I recently started a small fan petition supporting the idea of Blumhouse or A24 tackling a modern Slenderman project someday, but this post is mainly just meant to start discussion with other horror fans.

I’d honestly love to see internet horror taken seriously again.

Here’s the petition link if anyone’s interested:

Surely the Operator is definitely a form of SlenderMan, how couldn’t he?

I’ve heard some say he’s not Slenderman, but surely he’s a variant or a type of Slenderman. He looks and acts identical to him.

I found these in the http://slendermanarkive.wikidot.com/ there are a lot of stuff about the original mythos in there, archived posts, images, and even information about the Modern and Original Mythos, I really recommend you guys to take a look at it!

“Morley Grove” is one of the most terrifying depictions of SlenderMan in recent years

If you don’t know, Morley Grove is an analog horror series created by RemyAbode, the man behind Gemini Horror Entertainment (one of the most famous analog horror projects).

Morley Grove is essentially Remy’s own interpretation of Slenderman who in this project has the name of “Morley Man”. In the course of 6 videos we’re learning about disappearances in the town of Morley Grove, as well as seeing the strange phenomenon of “spectres” seemingly haunting pictures and trying to communicate (essentially some sort of ghosts of the victims).

The most creepy thing about this version of Slenderman by far is the fact that he doesn’t only kidnap people, he literally ERASES them from existence. Thus, the victims are overtime completely wiped out from photos, as if they never existed 😬
It’s so powerful that it can mess with all sorts of communication (deleting dashcam footage, altering phone calls).

Another interesting thing about it is that Slenderman may be seeking revenge on the town as in one of the videos we see that a significant amount of trees are getting cut off from the main forest, where it probably resides (you can see him in the first picture that’s from the video, he’s fricking huge).

Legit one of the scariest Slender man themed and analog horror projects I’ve seen in a while, it replicates the atmosphere of early internet horror and the 2000’s so well. The video “Morley Ghost” specifically scared the shit out of me lol

I recommend y’all to check it out! It’s quite short as I mentioned in the beginning, though possibly it will have more installments in the future, but as of now I doubt it since they all came out in 2022.

You have to adapt the OG Surgist mythos. How would you do that?

I personally belive Morley Grove did a great job with it, but it's still only based on a few images, not the entire spectrum, and as a guy that didn't really like this incarnation of Slenderman, how would you use the OG Slenderman?

Note that what I mean by original myths is everything that excludes blogs and series like Marble Hornets or everymanHYBRID onwards.

Photos taken from the Nemesis Bloodryche video: What REALLY is the Slenderman?

From the positive reviews by critics for The Backrooms movie, I'm expecting endless comparisons on "how the backrooms movie did better than Slenderman" type videos.

It really wouldn't be all that surprising if they get compared.

They should have gotten the guys who made Marble hornets make the 2018 Slenderman film

Some ideas for a Slender Man movie

These days i was thinking about some ideas that would be cool to see in a Slender Man movie and I'd like to share some of them. (Note: The further they go it'll get a bit "wilder" because i know some of these might be too much in idea or in practice.)

1. He should be on screen most of the time without us actually seeing him

One of his pages say he's always watching, so what if that was something that could actually be used? He doesn't need to be a constant threat, he doesn't need to always have a big influence on the scenario but i feel like he should be there on the background, mixing with everything so we never truly notice unless it's watched again or if someone pays close attention. This idea also came from the movie Hereditary, specifically from that mom scene where she's in the corner of the room.

2. The movie could be a mix between found footage and normal camera play

I feel like only one POV wouldn't quite catch the feeling of the threat Slender Man is. My idea is something like the Backrooms movie (at least what we've seen from the trailer since it hasn't released yet). Maybe we can have moments where we see from other characters perspectives just like in Slender: The Arrival with the tapes close to the end of the game.

3. It should be made by a "indie" studio

The movie needs to be made by people who know how to make things uncomfortable and weird. From what I've seen, some people are divided between liking and not liking the idea of A24 being the studio for the movie (I'm not sure why but i know you guys have your motives) but honestly? I think it would be better than what the 2018 movie was. It also doesn't need to be a famous indie studio like A24.

4. A "rework" of how Slender's powers work

This is a little more radical but honestly trying to adapt his powers from the games, specifically the static can be a bit hard (and of course some of the things from other media like Marble Hornets) so what i propose is that the static could be a way to show that he's not specifically killing people but rather taking their mind so they can become proxys. That could be seen from the different POVs like i said in the previous text from the cameras or it could be shown it happening to a person without it being exactly their POV. His tentacles could be used as something more menacing, maybe his arms could always be still, only using his tentacles to attack, grab and so on.

5. He shouldn't be exactly explained on how he works.

Personally i feel like that takes away some of the scary factor is when a monster is explained. Yeah some things will be understood on how he works, it's inevitable, but it should stay at that. He could do things that he's never done before just to throw the characters and the viewers off. He should remain a mystery as to what he can do and what his motives are.

I don't remember right now all of the ideas I've had but these are some. Feel free to discuss about some of these ideas and tell your takes on how to improve some of these!

Sorry if some words aren't being used correctly as English isn't my first language. If you don't understand something I'll do my best to explain it better!

I think we all know Slenderman is easily one of the most iconic and influential internet horror characters of all time alongside with FNAF.

However, once FNAF first released, I always felt like most people slowly forgot about Slendy and his games like Eight Pages and Arrival, which kinda makes me sad considering his games were so big and fun to play back then.

A24 thrives with atmospheric, psychological horror—so if they ever reboot Slenderman, the director choice is EVERYTHING.

Here are some unexpected candidates:

Victor Surge (the creator himself – pure lore accuracy)

Troy Wagner (Marble Hornets – the blueprint for Slenderman horror)

Markiplier (Iron Lung proves he understands tension & dread)

CoryxKenshin (strong storytelling + horror instincts, but unproven directing-wise)

PewDiePie (huge influence, but more of a wildcard)

And before people say “these aren’t real directors”…

The Backrooms movie literally hired Kane Parsons—the creator—to direct it.

That proves studios are willing to trust creators who understand the source material over traditional filmmakers.

As someone who’s followed The Backrooms closely, that decision makes sense—

and honestly, Slenderman deserves that same level of authenticity.

Who would you actually trust with Slenderman—one of these picks, or a traditional A24 horror director?

i thought it's funny like he's trying to jumpscare mannequins or wtf is that bruh
