End of season progress chart

End of season progress chart

We all know we didn't make the playoffs (sorry, forgot the spoiler tag). I tracked progress through the season and posted the following chart at various points. Now the season is over, I redid the numbers based on how many points would have gotten us in the playoffs (the original target was 96 (88% chance of playoffs based off the last decade) but 90 was good enough this year).

Ultimately, we lost it post-Olympics. The big plummet from the end of November to early December, where we lost 9 of 10 in regulation time, really hurt, but not as much as the dismal time we had between the end of February and the final game against Colorado. During that period we won only 7 of 26 games, and picked up a losing point twice. That means of a possible 52 points we got only 16 - a dismal 30% of the points available. Given that we were actually above the line coming out of the Olympic break, it makes the pain all that more exquisite.

Next season the league shifts from 82 to 84 games and so I'll use the historical average number of points per game to get into the playoffs from previous seasons to guesstimate where the line will be.

One final point - we won fewer games this season than last, which is shocking really. We made up that shortfall by being more resilient and taking games into overtime. The loser points were worth a lot (although not as much as the Kings who won only one more game than us but made it into the playoffs by virtue of 20 (yes twenty) losing points).

By popular demand Unserious & Soft flair has been added.

Because of how unserious and soft I am, I didn’t want to creat the flair myself, just used the AI Slop that u/MartialSpark quickly made. Because nothing is more unserious & soft than AI slop.

Well other than all of us of course.

Enjoy the flair you bunch of softies.

Reddit GM Expansion Draft

I see a lot of people saying we fumbled the expansion draft (I'm not here to confirm or deny that). What I'd love to see is the roster everyone would put together if it was 5 years ago. Obviously there is a ton more nuance since this exercise doesn't involve salary cap or free agent signings. It's also known that there wasn't much other GMs were willing to trade. There are some names that were available but no shot we were taking them (ie Ovi or Landeskog) but I'm still curious who all we think we missed. Here is the protected list, let's see your Stanley Cup contenders.

Red Wings fan here - Thoughts on this Shane Wright trade for more offense?

Hey all, I’m a Wings fan curious about your take on a potential Shane Wright move. It feels like Wright might need a fresh start in a new system, and Seattle seems to want more dynamic offensive firepower especially on the wing to reset their youth without a full tear down to push for playoffs.

Since we can’t move Raymond or DeBrincat, and a Larkin/Wright swap doesn't quite align for either side given Larkin’s got a NMC and likely would only waive it to get traded to a current contender, what would you think of this package to help Seattle build a more skilled group with immediate answers to help next season?

Seattle receives: Max Plante (NCAA), Amadeus Lombardi (AHL), and Andrew Copp (NHL).

Detroit receives: Shane Wright.

Fit for Seattle:

Max Plante (Top Piece): Our top prospect and this year’s Hobey Baker winner. He’s an elite playmaking winger (think Nick Schmaltz) and has high point potential on a top line with other high end players on the wing. He’s going to be returning for one more year at Duluth to play on a line with his brothers, then he could potentially join Beniers late next season to give you guys a young high end wing with vision.

Amadeus Lombardi: High speed and high skill winger who just put up 42 points in 47 AHL games after several high point seasons that preceded it between AHL and junior. He’s ready for the NHL at this point and will be a 23 year old RFA this summer but is blocked in Detroit. He would bring speed and touch as an NHL middle six guy. Plus, he’s named after Mozart and his Dad played in a band, so Seattle seems like a cool location for him where he could be a nice young player that adds to your other young mix of guys.

Andrew Copp: A proven, two way 3C to stabilize the lineup while Berkly Catton develops. Had a very productive season playing on the Red Wings 2nd line between Patrick Kane and Alex Debrincat. He’ll be on the last year of his deal giving Lambert a productive veteran for a playoff push who can also PK and offer contract flexibility afterward if he sticks in the bottom six, immediately replacing Wright’s spot.

Overall, you guys get two upside offensive threats and a reliable center vet, while we take the swing on Wright’s reclamation in midst of Larkin’s pending departure. I know it’s not exactly Lafreniere for him one for one or a Kyrou type from St Louis as immediate offensive firepower, but thought it could be a good way to grab quantity blended with high upside potential in Plante.

Thoughts?

Should the Kraken go all-in on this roster to compete now or blow it up and retool?

With Francis' firing and pending team audit, the days of Seattle's middle-of-the-road approach may be over.

If the Kraken make a big change, they could go hard in either direction: swing big on trades and free agency to bolster the existing roster, or blow up the veteran-heavy expansion era core and retool.

Which approach do you think they should take?
