Upstate NY 5th Grader Makes Top 128 Nationwide — Needs Votes

🙋‍♀️Hi everyone — I’m hoping this community might help support an amazing local kid named Mikey.🙏🏻

Mikey is a hardworking 5th grader from Upstate New York (Saratoga County) currently competing in the nationwide America’s Favorite Student competition. Out of thousands of students who entered, he has made it down to only 128 students remaining nationwide — and as far as we can tell, he’s now the only contestant from New York State still left in the competition.

He’s in the QUEST program for gifted learners, takes advanced math, scored in the top 1% on his CogAT testing, participated in the NYS First in Math competition, and recently played the lead role in his school play. He dreams of one day attending an Ivy League university, and this competition could really help him get there.

Voting is free once every 24 hours, and there are also optional paid votes. Paid votes are tax-deductible donations that go directly to The Planetary Society, which supports science and space education programs.

We’ve been trying so hard to spread the word ourselves because we haven’t had much luck getting local media attention, so every share, vote, and kind comment truly means a lot to us.

Thank you for taking the time to read Mikey’s story and support a great kid chasing a huge dream ❤️

Psycho drivers

Be careful out there! I had this psycho follow me home off 87, block me in my driveway for 10 minutes, then approach my car to try to get me to exit my vehicle. I ended up leaving and losing him eventually, but could have turned out much worse with these crazy people. I did not call the police as it was happening but should have, apparently this is a felony. Protect yourselves!

EDIT:

Two things to address here based on comments, I will address them separately:

  1. I did not go to my house. I got off an exit that was not even my exit, and drove around some circular neighborhoods for 20 minutes thinking he would get bored and leave. When he did not, I went to a house I drive by regularly that often has a law enforcement vehicle parked in the driveway. I was hoping it was there, but when it was not I stupidly pulled in anyway. I didn’t expect him to park behind me and block me in the driveway honestly, a poor decision, but my intention was to just turn around since the car was not there. This is the house where he got out of his car to tap on my window. Someone told me it may endanger the person who lives there to say it’s my driveway, but at 1am when I posted this I did not want to confirm this was not my house in case he saw this, and I assumed if he came back later and saw the vehicle in the driveway it would scare him away. I did not consider there may be a family there when the officer is not home that could be in danger from this person, so to be clear, this was NOT MY HOUSE.

  2. He probably thought I was the AH on the highway initially. I tend to drive around 5 mph over the speed limit, and I passed him, who was in the left lane, from the middle lane. I know people can be upset by that, but I have never had an issue beyond someone honking or something. After I passed him, he stayed inches from my bumper, apparently mad that I passed him on the right. Eventually I caught up to traffic in front of me, and when they braked I had to brake as well. I think he may have thought I brake checked him, but I braked only as hard as I had to based on traffic in front of me. After that, as soon as there was a gap in the middle lane, he used it to accelerate around me (while swerving halfway into my lane) and squeeze between me and the car in front of me. I did honk at this point…which apparently was enough motivation for him to get back behind me and follow me at a multiple car distance 7 or 8 miles up the northway, off the exit I took (not my exit), through multiple circular neighborhoods and then to a driveway where he blocked me in. I could see how he thought I was the AH in the first place, but to do the rest of what he did he has to have some mental issues that I was not about to exacerbate in any way. He seemed calm when he was speaking, which by the way the lip reading guy in the comments was pretty spot on, but his actions leading up to that made me not want to interact with him in any way, however small. Especially anything to refute his claim I “tried to run him off the road”, as he has to be unhinged to follow me for that long, block me in a driveway, then get out of his car on private property and approach another car to tap on the window and confront.

TLDR; I may have been the AH initially, while unintentionally, but he stalked me for close to an hour, followed me through multiple circular neighborhoods, blocked me in a driveway, then got out of his car to confront me on private property afterwards.

I am not a Reddit person, I had help posting this from a friend, and it was actually much easier to post a gif than the full video. The audio is very hard to hear over the radio, but it is almost word for word what the commenter who reads lips said. I said nothing, just recorded, as his actions up to that point were very alarming and I did not want to say anything that might push him over the edge. I did not want to do anything to provoke him to violence, so I did not react or respond to anything, just recorded. I feel pretty confidently that if I had not been recording he would have had a very different demeanor.

Rides

Does anyone know of someone or some place that could accommodate 5 people for a ride back and forth to the Belmont Stakes on June 6th? My friends and I will be staying at our cottage in Schroon Lake for the weekend but trying to find safe and sober transportation back and forth to the Belmont. We’ve been quoted at over a $1,500 for rides! Looking for something cheaper than that and nothing fancy.

Burgers

Best casual spot to get a big juicy beef burger? (must have easy parking as I’m handicapped) Not anything “deconstructed” or fancy. Straight up, traditional good, grilled burger!

After spending the weekend up there last week, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. I was looking for an apartment around 1800 but I kept getting places skid or gas and the reviews are not good, on top of that they cover no amenities.

Potential first time homebuyer here. I have family that lives South of Albany, I've been to Saratoga Springs many times. I kind of want a semi-rural kind of life/dewling. I've been look online at homes in these areas. I've noticed especially around Lake Desolation homes seem to be really cheap. I know some of them are only 3 season homes but even the 4 season homes with Propane heating seem fairly cheap compared to homes just a few miles down the road. Any reason why?

I'll be up in a few weeks and plan to take a drive or motorcycle ride around the area. For anyone that lives in the areas, how do you like it?

I kind of want a semi-rural house but still close to Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls and can be to Albany fairly quickly. Also can be to NYC via train in a few hours. So the area seems good.

Dining

Headed to Saratoga for Whitney Day this August. Is there any dining options for dinner that are within walking distance of the track? If not, can anyone recommend any good restaurants in Saratoga or maybe within a few towns south of Saratoga?

Please help me find nature walking trails and parks!!!

I’m beginning my health & healing journey again.. I’ve been neglecting myself lately, but now that it’s getting nicer out, my goal is to be outside as much as possible.

I need some help finding beautiful, peaceful, and dog friendly walking trails, easy/beginner hiking trails, and parks in or nearby Saratoga for when I’d just like to lay on a blanket in the grass with a book!

I’d also be interested in nearby swimming holes, hidden camping spots, and whimsical scenic areas :)

Offered drugs outside of the Parting Glass.

Last night at like 10 PM I was leaving the Parting Glass. An African American gentleman (not being racist, just describing the guy) in his like late 50s asked me how I was doing, I responded “fine” he then asked me if it was a party in there and I said “yeah, haha”. He then announced that “he had that good stuff” and asked me “if I wanted any”. I just said “naaaah” and kinda ran away.

I think maybe he could have been a cop considering that the place is literally within the sight line of the police station, but who knows. I DO NOT partake in drugs, I mean I’m liberal so I don’t judge people who do but this interaction made me super uncomfortable. I’ve felt really anxious all morning now.

I’m trying to reunite two siblings. This guy’s name is Edward and he lives in the Saratoga area. He’s roughly (no pun intended) 10 years old. If anyone happens to know his family please get in touch!

When do the Skidmore students move out?

Just curious if anyone knows when the Skidmore students move out. Often times they leave pretty cool shit behind and I'm decorating a new apartment is all. Thanks

I’m pretty free at the weekends and l’m looking for things to do where I could meet people my age. I’m looking for something that is recurring weekly that you see the same people. Something in the area, doesn’t have to be specifically in Saratoga. Any ideas?

Concert?

Do I just have to buy the tickets? What else do I have to buy?? Like do I have to rent a lawn chair, etc.? Do we not stand up for concerts? Haven’t been Saratoga downtown much so I have no idea how it works for spac.

Can anyone recommend a good optometrist (OD) that takes VSP and CIGNA?

We live in greenfield center. Open to Wilton, Greenfield, and Saratoga. I understand medical reimbursement (my wife and I are both in healthcare) and why someone may choose to stop taking these insurances. If it's time to move on to someone earlier in their career trying to grow their business so be it. I view ODs fairly generically.

Thanks in advance.
