Tate's audition for Journey

I'm in a big Journey listening phase, and as a long time Rycher, I'm fascinated to think what Tate's audition was like. What was it like, what songs? The audition is briefly mentioned in the Arnel documentary, but I think that's the only content of substance that I've seen. Does anyone else know anything or has anyone else seen anything substantive in this regard? Thanks

Christ, Ryche hit the spot with Speak lyrics.

Seven years of power

The corporation claw

The rich control the government, the media the law

To make some kind of difference

Then everyone must know

Eradicate the fascists, revolution will grow

The system we learn says we're equal under law

But the streets are reality, the weak and poor will fall

Let's tip the power balance and tear down their crown

Educate the masses, We'll burn the White House down

I guess it depends on where in the world you are, but I just streamed it in the UK and it sounds great!
Operation: Mindcrime III is produced by Disturbed bassist John Moyer, who’s been working with Geoff Tate for over a decade now, going back to The Key (2015). This is actually the fourth album they’ve done together. It also marks the first studio album with guitarist Kieran Robertson, who moved from Glasgow to the US nearly ten years ago to join Tate’s band.

Robertson plays a bigger role this time around and co-wrote a lot of the material with Tate. In another interview, he mentioned it was basically a dream come true to work on a new Mindcrime chapter, since he first heard the original 1988 album when he was just 12, blasting from his dad’s car stereo.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Geoff Tate is returning to the dystopian world introduced in the original Operation: Mindcrime. That album is still considered one of the most influential concept albums in metal, mixing progressive elements with a cinematic story about politics, revolution, and identity.

With Operation: Mindcrime III, he revisits that universe and explores what happens after the revolution — the consequences of power, control, and rebellion. It keeps that same storytelling vibe, with strong vocals and a pretty cinematic feel throughout, while also expanding the story for a more modern context.

I listened to OM3 three times today. (I have a lot of grass to cut). I’m an old school QR fan and GT’s vocals have always pulled me in. That being said, I am fully aware that he can no longer pull the high notes. I do admire his effort. I still think he’s got incredible talent. This new album grew on me. The fourth time I listened, I pulled out my original OM cd to see how the songs lined up. I really enjoyed the parallels. No, it’s not like the original. There’s a lot lacking, but I am growing to love it. “Do you still believe?” is my favorite. I’ve read the other posts, I know I’m an outlier. I’m just trying to put a positive review out. I enjoy the album for what it is. 🤘🏻

  1. Very weird not seeing the word 'Queensryche' on this album.

  2. Nothing can EVER touch the original Mindcrime. Best album ever. Banger after banger after banger. Amazing musicianship.

  3. For what this continuation is worth, it is a pretty solid album. Know a lot of fans didn't care for Mindcrime II, but i enjoyed the hell out of it. Would put Mindcrime 3 at about the same level.

  4. No point comparing 3 to original. Just view as a separate musical entity.

  5. Naming a song 'you know my fucking name' is childish and lame.

  6. Personally, i haven't liked Tate as a person ever since he screwed over Queensryche. He is an unlikeable guy. And his voice isn't the incredible powerhouse it used to be. But, still really enjoy his voice, and it shines on this collection of songs. He knows his limitations and makes them work on the album.

  7. REAL solid tracks on this album, and am actually pleasantly surprised.

  8. Hearing 'kill Mary', glass breaking, etc.. just brings a beautiful nostalgic smile.

8.5/10

Mindcrime III Pre-Orders

Does anyone know when Tate plans on shipping the pre-orders for physical media through his site? Been out over a week now, not a peep. There's no guarantee of course of when, but he's posted a ton of pics from shows showing people buying the stuff there.

Just curious when the existing orders will go out.

Hoopla is a great free service. It's an app for iPhone and Android wherein you can listen to digital music, audiobooks, movies, and etc.

You get 5 albums a month. Just plug in your participating library card account info when you create an account.

Most of the 80s and 90s Rÿche is on there.

New listener; this is my 4th Rÿche album I have heard in its entirety so far on Hoopla.

Just listened to the album through for the first time. Some good tracks on it and some cool guitar work, but my biggest issue is with the track "You Can't Walk Away Now"

For the most part, I did think it was a cool track where X is talking to Nikki about him becoming unfocused and starting to slip and want out. But here is where I start having a massive issue, in the first Mindcrime, in the track "Suite Sister Mary" at the beginning, we hear X telling Nikki to kill Marry and the Priest. But "You Can't Walk Away" backtracks that completely and it is told to Nikki over the phone to kill Marry which completely pissed me off.

I don't think anyone was expecting this album to be even close to Mindcrime 1, but good lord, it's just lazy to rewrite the most pivotal part in that story.

I like this album. Power is the best song, but it’s obviously been out longer than all the other songs so it’s had room to grow on me. Some rankings will probably change over time, and we currently don’t have access to the lyrics online. Anyway, here’s the review.

* The Scene of the Crime - I Remember Now type track (it actually samples IRN). Does a decent job setting the mood of the album. Serves its purpose.

* You Know My F*cking Name - 6.5/10 it’s a meh song. I really like the intro. The crowd samples are really weird though. Some of the harmonies on this song sound weirdly dissonant (1:09 for example). Doesn’t stand out at all. Great guitar work at the end though

* The Answer - 8/10 The vocal phrasing during the first verse is kind of weird. The crescendo to the chorus is pretty well done though. Again, some of the harmonies sound dissonant. The second verse is really good though and the second pre-chorus has a rare show of vocal distortion for Tate.

* Vulnerable - 8.5/10 I really like the chorus in this one, as well as the bass riff.

* I’ll Eat Your Heart Out - 7.5/10 Great guitar work again. Features some female vocals from someone? Decent tune.

* Do You Still Believe? - 6.5/10 This song starts with just Geoff and some piano. An orchestra joins. The female vocals play a bigger role in this song. This song just didn’t stick out to me.

* The Devils Breath - 8.5/10 This tune has some cool harmonies and guitar work and as I listen to it a second (and now third) time writing this section it’s definitely growing on me. Geoff’s performance is also really good on this song.

* Ascension is just a quick instrumental acoustic guitar piece but it’s nice.

* Set You Free 6/10 is nothing special and I’m not really a fan of it.

* Descension is another instrumental, and it makes me wonder why these three songs aren’t just one track, as clearly they all go together.

* Power - 9/10 as I’ve already said this is a killer track and definitely my favorite.

* You Can’t Walk Away Now - 0/10. This is just 2 and a 1/2 minutes of talking, that also contradicts the first Mindcrime. This track is a run on version of Dr. X telling Nikki to kill Mary, over the phone. The intro to Suite Sister Mary for 1) DOESNT TAKE PLACE OVER THE PHONE and 2) spends 10 seconds to do this. This song is a complete waste of space. What was Geoff thinking…

* A Monster Like Me - 7/10 SAXOPHONE! This song is alright, but it doesn’t feel like the end of an album. It ends really abruptly too. Nothing in this song really stuck out to me either.

Hope I’ll get to hear at least Power when I see him this week, Vulnerable and The Devils Breath would be nice too. Overall very decent album, featuring some amazing guitar and bass work, as well as some great vocals from Geoff.

In the song I Am I there is a spoken spark deep in the mix during the outdoor. At the very end it become clear and the speaker says "and wonders, what now". Does anyone know what spoken part says during the entire outro?

I’m going to this show in Green Bay.

Who is opening? Does anybody know?

Also how’s the show, for those who have seen it?

Who is the band (I guess it’s not the original lineup)
