I like this album. Power is the best song, but it’s obviously been out longer than all the other songs so it’s had room to grow on me. Some rankings will probably change over time, and we currently don’t have access to the lyrics online. Anyway, here’s the review.
* The Scene of the Crime - I Remember Now type track (it actually samples IRN). Does a decent job setting the mood of the album. Serves its purpose.
* You Know My F*cking Name - 6.5/10 it’s a meh song. I really like the intro. The crowd samples are really weird though. Some of the harmonies on this song sound weirdly dissonant (1:09 for example). Doesn’t stand out at all. Great guitar work at the end though
* The Answer - 8/10 The vocal phrasing during the first verse is kind of weird. The crescendo to the chorus is pretty well done though. Again, some of the harmonies sound dissonant. The second verse is really good though and the second pre-chorus has a rare show of vocal distortion for Tate.
* Vulnerable - 8.5/10 I really like the chorus in this one, as well as the bass riff.
* I’ll Eat Your Heart Out - 7.5/10 Great guitar work again. Features some female vocals from someone? Decent tune.
* Do You Still Believe? - 6.5/10 This song starts with just Geoff and some piano. An orchestra joins. The female vocals play a bigger role in this song. This song just didn’t stick out to me.
* The Devils Breath - 8.5/10 This tune has some cool harmonies and guitar work and as I listen to it a second (and now third) time writing this section it’s definitely growing on me. Geoff’s performance is also really good on this song.
* Ascension is just a quick instrumental acoustic guitar piece but it’s nice.
* Set You Free 6/10 is nothing special and I’m not really a fan of it.
* Descension is another instrumental, and it makes me wonder why these three songs aren’t just one track, as clearly they all go together.
* Power - 9/10 as I’ve already said this is a killer track and definitely my favorite.
* You Can’t Walk Away Now - 0/10. This is just 2 and a 1/2 minutes of talking, that also contradicts the first Mindcrime. This track is a run on version of Dr. X telling Nikki to kill Mary, over the phone. The intro to Suite Sister Mary for 1) DOESNT TAKE PLACE OVER THE PHONE and 2) spends 10 seconds to do this. This song is a complete waste of space. What was Geoff thinking…
* A Monster Like Me - 7/10 SAXOPHONE! This song is alright, but it doesn’t feel like the end of an album. It ends really abruptly too. Nothing in this song really stuck out to me either.
Hope I’ll get to hear at least Power when I see him this week, Vulnerable and The Devils Breath would be nice too. Overall very decent album, featuring some amazing guitar and bass work, as well as some great vocals from Geoff.
