QUT & my Teaching staffs response to this outage is ridiculous

To preface this, I'm an undergraduate student maintaining a 6 GPA whilst working 5 days a week & studying full time. The loss of an entire weekend & QUT's "response" of only giving extensions until wednesday of this week is ridiculous. I understand further correspondence hasn't happened yet. But, for those of us who rely on the weekends & have mountains of work coming up the next two weeks, a pathetic 3 day extension just isn't enough. If we don't see something adequate today in terms of due date adjustments I'm game to riot if y'all are as well. I'm talking AT LEAST a week.

As for my teaching staff, only ONE of my 4 units has provided us with assessment materials to help us work through this, & that assessment isn't due until June!

Sorry for the rant, but coping with full time work & study is a lot for all of us who don't have the privilege of time. Do better QUT

QUT's response to the Canvas outage is inadequate

QUT is a large university, and Canvas is a significant piece of infrastructure underpinning the delivery of teaching and learning across the institution. Given this, it is reasonable to expect that contingency plans would already exist for a major outage of this kind.

For example, a pre-existing contingency plan might require unit coordinators to upload essential teaching materials to an alternative platform, such as OneDrive, GitHub, or literally anything. An email sent on Friday which effectively amounts to “we’ll get back to you on Monday afternoon” is not an adequate response to the loss of such a critical system.

I do so much uni work on the weekends, and I have so much due over the next three weeks. This outage, and the poor response to it, has really fucked me over.

This is honestly more of just a rant but am pretty annoyed right now, as a student from another university that lives closer to QUT I often use the QUT library to study after hours as it’s more convenient. I have done this many times over the past few years and none of the security officers have had an issue with me silently doing my work there. Tonight a security officer asked for my ID and I explained my situation and he said he was still going to kick me out. I told him that I wouldn’t be able to get public transport at this hour (1am) to get to my other campus and if he could please just allow me to finish my work here as I am unable to do my study at home, he just kept repeating that I can’t be here if I am not a QUT student and I said I understand that but I told him many people that don’t go to this uni study after hours and that I just want to finish working on my assignment due the next day. He said that security regularly check everyone’s ID and that only QUT students are in the library after hours, I argued that is incorrect as I have spent many nights in the library overnight without ever being bothered by security as I am just quietly doing my work and not causing any problems.

I honestly feel like removing people that are keeping to themselves and quietly finishing their work without disturbing anyone else should be at the bottom of the priority list. Anyway I hope kicking me out to finish my study in botanical gardens where it is much less safe made him feel super manly and good about himself for protecting other students from such a dangerous threat. Idk should I just suck it up or is this a valid reason for being upset about.

withdrawing from units

hello,
so i’m currently in year 2 semester 1 of my course and im fkn hating it. i’ve decided my next course and what im going to do, but i just want some second opinions on what ive been thinking on. for context, im in a health course and am going to change to a bussiness one next year.

i am wanting to withdraw from my courses this sem (i understand that i’ve missed both census dates and i will have academic and financial penalty) because i honestly am so clocked out atm and want to focus on family and work. i also know i can infernal transfer or just apply through qtac as well. should i just withdraw and apply through qtac or finish this sem and internal transfer? does ‘withdraw’ on my academic record really affect anything at all?

pls let me know

Latest email bs

Dear students,

Following last week’s global cybersecurity incident affecting the Canvas platform, QUT is preparing to restore Canvas access for students and staff by tomorrow Tuesday 12 May.

QUT has received assurance from Canvas that the platform has been restored and is safe to resume normal operations. The university has also undertaken additional security reviews and remediation activities before restoring access to the platform.

QUT has received advice that QUT data was impacted as part of the broader global incident affecting Canvas. Importantly, QUT does not store sensitive personal or financial information in Canvas, with this information managed through other university systems.

We are continuing to work with Canvas to understand the nature and extent of the impacted data and will provide further information as it becomes available.

We understand the disruption has impacted teaching, learning and assessment activities across the university in different ways, and we thank you for your patience and understanding while we worked through this disruption.

Restoring Canvas access

Canvas will be available by Tuesday morning 12 May. You will be prompted to log back in and reauthenticate the first time you access Canvas following the outage.

Learning and teaching updates

As previously communicated, learning and teaching activities are expected to continue as normal where possible. Where learning or teaching activities for a unit have been impacted by the Canvas disruption, Unit Coordinators will contact students directly regarding any changes to learning activities, teaching materials or assessment arrangements where required.

Assessment extensions

All assessment originally due between Friday 8 May and Thursday 14 May is now due by 11:59pm Friday 15 May, at which time the 48-hour late submission period will recommence for all eligible assessment.

Students experiencing extenuating circumstances or requiring additional support should contact their Unit Coordinator. Students should also refer to any individual information provided by Unit Coordinators.

Remain vigilant for phishing scams

Following advice issued by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs to all impacted organisations, students should remain vigilant for phishing emails or scam messages at this time. QUT will continue communicating through official university channels only. Do not click suspicious links or provide personal information in response to unexpected emails or messages.

Further information and FAQs are available on the HiQ website.

Please be patient if contacting HiQ or your learning and teaching staff directly, as wait times are expected.

Regards,

Gillian Bromley

Acting Vice-President (Administration) and University Registrar

Acknowledgement of AI

What the hell is this acknowledgement of AI about in new assignments? It says you can use AI but you have to acknowledge your use and the rules are super confusing. Anyone been cooked by this or have experience with it?

Saw this floating around and figured I’d share because petrol prices are crazy right now and free money is free money 😂

ING are currently offering anyone who signs up before May 31st a $100 bonus. No catches other than doing a few easy things once your account’s open. Here’s the breakdown:

  1. Use the following link to sign up - Link here
  2. Deposit $1000 (you can transfer out once you receive your $100 bonus)
  3. Make 5 purchases - Just use the card you get sent on your weekly shopping (split the transaction into 5 payments at checkout)
  4. Open a savings maximiser account and deposit $1 into it (you can do this straight away once you sign up they walk you through everything)

Then you just sit back and wait for ING to drop that $100 straight into your account. You can transfer it to your main bank, or spend it with the ING card, up to you.

Took me less than 10 minutes to do everything and it’s one of the easiest bonuses I’ve seen. Longest part is waiting for the card to arrive but once you have it you can just use it with your regular shopping for 1 week.

I really wish QUT had more summer semesters

Especially for QUTYOU subjects. But there is also literally just one for engineering and 0 for comp sci and it sucks. Spoke with friends from other schools and it seems to provide them a significantly lighter workload.

Why are some units acting like nothing is even happening?

I have ONE class that has addressed it and provided study and assessment content access, and the others are just like "ok make sure you attend your WEEKLY GRADED ASSESSMENT even though you don't have access to any of the study content <3 "

dude I have a TUTORIAL TMMRW and idk squat, and they're straight up ignoring me on email.

Participants needed: women aged 30-45

I have a group assignment for marketing where i need to do message testing with the target audience and looking for some volunteers.

- woman aged 30-45
- comfortable with instagram and facebook with familiarity with tiktok
- Someone who’s busy or needs to slow down in life
- someone who possibly feels the pressure to give different versions of themselves to different aspects of life

if you fit most the criteria (age group essential), please comment if you would like to participate in some questioning. It shouldn’t take very long and it can be conducted via zoom or messages whatever suits you best!

Anyone else having trouble with getting their medical certificates approved for an extension? I was sick and ended up missing my assignment by 2 hours.

I’ve gotten 2 medical certificates to apply for extensions but they keep pushing for more details which my doctor is borderline refusing because it breaches doctor/patient confidentiality and privacy. I specified the exact dates and that acute medical illness prevented me from attending uni. Plus my doctor thinks it’s ridiculous they won’t accept it because it’s the same standard of medical certificate for work/uni/school/etc.

I missed the 48 hours* to submit an extension but it was a legit medical reason why and HiQ wasn’t much help :(

Currently waiting at the doctors for my 3rd certificate but honestly getting pretty fed up and losing time to work on my other units - anyone else having this issue?

Am i setting myself up for failure attendance wise?

hey guys! first year student, but i’ve been having a lot of trouble attending mainly my tutorials and workshops, maybe this is just due to lack of motivation in general but i only actually go to uni once a week (thats because attendance is checked i believe). ive preciously attended the tutorials and workshops and have gotten absolutely nothing out of them and I still complete all the work on time and with ease so i dont necessarily see the point. im doing a double degree and doing a portion of it online so I’m wondering if its a bad habit to avoid going as much as I do? I did have the same problem in high school and had bad attendance because of anxiety however my grades and such have never been impacted since everything you need to know is usually recorded online and theres tons of resources. overall is it okay to just work from home for the majority as long as im getting everything done? or am i just setting myself up for failure? i dont want to install bad habits but i dread going to uni even just once a week.

if it matters i have a job and such and i will rarely ever drop a shift and im reliable so its not like all i wanna do is stay at home- ive always struggled with learning environments like this as i witness that a lot of people that actually go to my classes get distracted easily and go off-topic whilst having the most irrelevant conversations (tutors too !!!)

Canvas effect on exams

Assessment due dates have been extended until Wednesday. Do you think there'd be any change for an online chem quiz I have on Tuesday? I didn't attend the lecture in person this week and didn't get around to watching the recording before it went down.

It seems like I can access the lecture from Echo360 still, but canvas has a bunch of material to work through each week which is as important as the classes, if not more.

If the quiz is shifted from Tuesday to Wednesday, it doesn't really make up for 4-5 days without that study material. I guess I can definitely go learn the content through other means, which I will, but I'm just wondering if there's any info on it.

the qut film course is lwk so buns. i’m a second year and it’s nothing like what i was expecting. in highschool i did a certificate in multimedia at tafe, which honestly made me feel way more prepared than whatever tf this degree is.

it’s all group work (which yes, is industry standard) but there has been no individual development of skills at all. at most it’ll be one small theory assessment due in the early weeks, then you’re dunked head first into a huge group project where everyone has more experience than you and takes over.

i have learnt nothing. no skills gained. still have no clue how to operate a camera, or work with lights or audio or pretty much anything. because students who have previous experience working on set (which is surprisingly A LOT) just take all the hard jobs, leaving basically nothing to do for the people who don’t know how to do anything. which is great because it makes the assessment go smoother, but how the fuck is that gonna help me when i graduate and have no skills for the industry?

plus, there’s absolutely nothing about post-production. for pre-production there’s maybe one or two classes about script writing, but that’s it. one of my passions was video editing, and there’s been genuinely not a single class or assessment about that, when it’s an entire (important!!) category in the industry itself.

i don’t know. i’m just super disappointed. there’s only one year left so i may as well just finish the degree, but it feels very useless and like i’ve wasted my money and 3 years of my life. it makes it really demotivating to attend class and actually put effort into trying.
