Looking for Permanent Residence in Lake Community, No Short Term Rentals

My company is opening a new office in Bethlehem and I am looking to move permanently to within an hour commute of that location (may not be Pocono region proper so I apologize in advance if that's the case). My wife and I have vacationed in lake community's such as Lake Harmony and Albrightsville and loved the areas, however the frequent carousel of renters rotating in the STRs was obvious and detracting even over the course of a weekend. Are there any lake communities that do not offer STRs that offer similar amenities without constant turnover? Would my best bet be to reach out to a realtor? Thanks in advance.

Jim Thorpe area / Memorial day weekend

Hi - I booked a cabin for Memorial Day weekend (Fri-Mon) close to Jim Thorpe (15min N of it), honestly not knowing much about the area but liked the cabin so went for it. Now that the dates are getting closer I started to look at things to do around there and I see a ton of cool stuff (Hickory Run, Hollow Tank trail, D&L trail, etc) but I also read that the town of Jim Thorpe itself can be super busy. Still looks very nice though. I expect it not to be as busy as Fall leaf seasons but Memorial Day might be still quite crowded?
Should I aim to get explore there first thing on Friday (driving from Jersey City, so could be there in mid/late morning) or Saturday / Sunday might be good for a stroll as well if we get downtown earlier? Thank you all!

What areas / communities are best for "retirement cabin" type living?

My husband and I are looking ahead to purchasing a small vacation / summer / weekend cabin (rancher style, or close to it), and want to begin looking at different communities in the Poconos.

We're not looking for big / high-end / all new everything. The ideal property would have enough yard for things like a backyard garden, and maybe inside a community with a few small amenities (but that's negotiable, as we don't want to get caught in HOA hell.) No "lot rent" type properties where we only have access to it for a portion of the year.

It's just the two of us and our cats, so something that we could invest in within the next 5 years and weekend at while we fix it up for a quiet retirement would be ideal. Not interested in renting / AirB&B'ing it or anything like that.

Can you recommend some specific areas or communities that I could plug into a search and keep an eye on?

July trip - where would you go?

GM everyone!

We’re planning a move to Philadelphia, but have an extra two nights on an upcoming July house scouting trip. I'd like to explore places west of the city, and I’d love to hear your suggestions. I’ll be flying into Trenton and want to start the trip with some relaxation and that mountain-town vibe.

The Jim Thorpe area and New Hope have been narrowed down to the countryside spots, but I’d love to hear any other suggestions you may have. We’re looking for beautiful views and a little “scenery outside of the city.” A town-like village area with walkable stuff is optimal. Ideally, all of this is within a two-hour drive from Philly.

Your suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciated! TIA

ETA: Would be spending Wednesday - Friday in the country and back to Philly on Friday night.

Drove past it today and saw a lot of construction being started, looked into it and saw there were 2 possibilities, some big warehouse company or relocating the municipal and community centers but I cannot find a definitive answer on what ended up getting approved

Edit: just to make it clear I dont mean the construction on 715 into 611 by the old TLC i mean up Werner road past the bridge by the old Pocono Elementary Center.

Currently living in New York, but looking to relocate to the Stroudsburg area. I've generally been avoiding looking at the communities since I've heard not great things about them but I see a few homes for sale in Penn Estates that are in my price range and are the type of house I'm looking for so I'm considering maybe giving them a look.

What is that community like? Is it mostly STRs or permanent residents?

Best Bars/Breweries

Heading to East Stroudsburg/Poconos area soon and looking for some recommendations. What are the best bars or breweries in the area? Also looking for a spot with really good wings. Open to anything from laid-back dive bars to breweries with good food and atmosphere. Thanks!

Anyone in the Poconos here who has asthma?

Here's my dilemma.

Our 9-year-old was diagnosed with asthma in 2023. Since then, the poor kid has gone through an onslaught of medication. Albuterol, Prednisone, Duoneb, Symbacort, Dupixent. Just recently, he started using the vest compression thingie. This was recommended by his pulmonologist after he had an endoscopy and biopsy. They found that half his lung was covered in mucus due to a bacteria. They prescribed Augmentin to fight the bacteria. It hurts to watch him go through all of this.

Our son was born here in the Poconos in 2017; however, we moved to Seattle in 2018 due to work. His asthma didn't really start 'til we moved back to the Poconos in 2023.

Upon asking, our pulmonologist (in Allentown) told us that geography CAN play a part in one's asthma symptoms. She mentioned that Lehigh Valley happened to be the worst city to live in for asthmatics. I checked this, and lo and behold, Allentown was the number one worst place to live for asthmatics.

We live in the Poconos. My wife has it stuck in her head that our son is so sick due to living in the Poconos and due to our winters.

I've tried explaining to her that the Poconos is at least 45 minutes from the Lehigh Valley. She won't budge. She wants to move back to Seattle.

She feels moving to Seattle (apparently, one of the best places to live for asthmatics) will magically fix our son's issues. I hope she's right! But I've tried to explain that many asthmatics, unfortunately, just live knowing that they have to take medications for the rest of their lives.

I told her that as soon as my job allows it, we'll move to Raleigh, NC (another city that claims to be a great city for asthmatics). I'd rather stay on the East Coast.

I did not like Seattle at all. Ridiculously expensive! With just two weeks of good weather the whole year, lol.

Just venting and hoping people could chime in with their wisdom, advice, and/or experiences.

My husband and I have been looking at the real estate in the Poconos region for the past 6 months or so. We reside in NYC and would like to purchase a home in the Poconos to spend part of our time at on the weekends. We have zero interest in renting it out.

We're looking for an area that has some space between neighbors. My dream is a living room with lots of windows with a pretty view. We're open to an HOA since it includes nice amenities that we'd like to use with our young daughter. School district isn't a concern for us.

Thoughts on areas we should be be eyeing? Open to all suggestions! Thank you so much in advance.

My Fiancee and I are planing on getting married at the hickory run state park chapel and are looking for a place to hold a reception with somewhere between 20-40 people. We are looking to keep it reasonable but also go somewhere that doesn't require a ton of prep work from us any suggestions would be much appreciated.
