Worried about students switching schools/being disciplined if they don't do well on EQAO.

Have you ever heard of a parent pulling their student out if they don't do well on EQAO? It's my first year in Grade6 and I have strong students but I worry that they may not do well for various reasons too long to get into here.

I'm in a very small school and we can't afford to lose any kids. I worry about the parents pulling them if they don't do well and then being disciplined myself.

How much do parents care about EQAO results?

Summer EI

Are there any supply teachers who purposely wait until August to apply to LTO so that if they can’t find a job in the summer then you can at least get EI? I love my school, but I have bills to pay and I live paycheck to paycheck. I think there’s gonna be a few openings and as much as I want to apply for them, I’m not going to. I’ve heard from multiple teachers where they signed a contract in June and then in September the permanent teacher decides that they’re gonna come back so now those LTO’s have lost their job and they also couldn’t get EI over the summer because they supposedly had a job lined up. LTO’s are never guaranteed jobs so to have us locked in for two months and not be able to get EI because we supposedly have a job lined up in September is just so unfair. Is there anyone who stopped applying to LTO’s until August or later in the year for this reason? Do you tell admin that you’re not gonna apply if they ask because you need EI?

Thinking about a second career

I am retiring soon from the government and am thinking about doing a BEd, especially given it’s now a 12 month degree (assuming one has a degree). Main goal is mental stimulation and some extra cash in retirement. I would want to be an occasional / supply teacher - high school. I like kids. I am not Catholic so don’t know if that rules out Catholic school. What do people think? I am crazy?

french teachers tdsb

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me out. I’m an OCT from Ottawa looking to move to toronto. I got hired on the ETH list with TDSB but now with all this surplus nonsense happening it seems like there will be absolutely no shot at me getting a job.

I am, however, experienced in teaching French and have my FSL part 1. Is there more of a need for that in Toronto? In Ottawa it’s like a gold mine but not sure how many French teachers will also be surplussed for the next school year.

Looking for any insight!! Thank you!!

OCT - Newly Certified

Hi all,

Looking for some much needed clarification. I recently moved to Canada and applied for OCT LAST MAY. but i just received confirmation of my certificate, with conditions to receive FULL certification.

In the letter they sent OCT said I will need to complete 5 additional AQs in order to receive full certification in the next 5 years. I find this to be an outrageous request.

I did my schooling in Wales completed an undergraduate degree for 3 years and then completed my PGCE (Post Graduate in Education) for 1 year. Which included 120 credits and 120 days on teaching practice in a school.

Yet, in the letter they said I need to complete these additional 5 AQs because I only completed "2 Semesters" Not "4 Semesters"?

I mentored a Canadian student last year and she received full certification without the need of these "conditions" that I have to do. We completed the same course, albeit I completed 5 years prior, but the course (PGCE) itself HASN'T changed.

On top of this I have 5 years of experience teaching in Wales.

Can I contact OCT? Have they read the information wrong? 5 AQs is expensive and time consuming and I feel hard done by to say the least.

Any ideas, support and recommendations are welcome. Thank you.

Worst admin you’ve had?

Some of us are admin ourselves and have a more detailed perspective.

I’m not gonna lie one admin I had nearly made me want to leave the profession. When I tell you it was bad…this could’ve been a whole movie/mini series on Netflix.

Hate is a strong word but yeah. I think I personally hate them.

Anybody else care to share their stories/what to look out for? Or were you one of the lucky ones who managed to have good admin throughout your whole career?

Supply or go for an LTO?

I'm brand new to the TCDSB as an occasional teacher. At this point, should I just supply for the remainder of the year, or go for an LTO?

(I'm elementary)

Struggling!

I teach high school science and I have a student who has a MID. They are a great kid, always happy, and ready to learn. I am struggling because this student cannot fully read and write, and doesn’t really understand topic(s) covered in class. He is able to copy things down and write what he is told. I have tried simple explanations, drawings, online simulations, hands-on labs and demos. I have modified every single assessment for him. I include less questions, only two M/C options, fill in the blanks, circle the correct answer with visuals and hints for every question. For example, one of the questions on his quiz was: “The atomic number tells us the number of: a) colours b) protons and c) shapes and he still got the incorrect answer.

I feel like I don’t know how to assess him fairly and I feel so bad about it because he really tries. He doesn’t have a good grade in the course despite me modifying everything, and it makes me feel like a bad teacher. It’s also incredibly time consuming and exhausting to have to modify everything. At the same time, it feels like I’m not even teaching the science curriculum anymore. I guess I’m just feeling exhausted. I have so many students with IEPs in my class and students who require scaffolding. I also have students who find the material too easy and need/want to be more challenged. How does everyone balance it all?

Participation in a OISE doctoral study

*sharing on behalf of a colleague*

Hi everyone,

I’m a doctoral researcher looking to connect with South Asian women teachers currently working in Ontario public schools for a study on teacher mental health and well-being.

The study explores how South Asian teachers experience mental health in their professional lives; both the challenges and the supports that make a difference. The goal is to help inform better resources and workplace practices.

What’s involved:

•    A 45–60 minute virtual interview

•    Completely confidential and voluntary

If you’ve ever felt like your experiences aren’t fully reflected in broader conversations about teacher well-being, this is a space where your voice can genuinely contribute to change.

If you’re interested (or even just curious), feel free to comment or send me a DM and I can share more details.

Thank you so much for considering or for sharing this with someone who might be interested 💛

Switching to 3-year BA for I/S (High School) - Grade/GPA concerns

Will failed courses + switching to a 3-year BA hurt my chances for teachers college (Ontario)?

Hey everyone,

I’m a second year student at uOttawa currently in an Honours BA in English, but I’m planning to switch to a 3-year Major in English with a Minor in Geography (for a second teachable).

This past year didn’t go well—I’m likely finishing the winter term with around 3 failed courses and a CGPA around 4.95 (maybe 5.0 if my last two grades go well). I know that’s not great, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to recover and stay on track for teachers college.

Right now, my plan is:

  • Retake 1–2 failed courses to boost my CGPA
  • Take Geography courses to build my minor/second teachable
  • Improve my grades significantly over the next couple of years
  • Gain relevant experience (volunteering, tutoring, possibly JET Programme)

My main concerns are:

  • How bad do multiple failed courses look if I show a strong upward trend later?

- How much will a 3-year degree vs. a 4-year Honours degree realistically hurt my chances for I/S in Ontario? I know preference is given to 4-year, but is it a dealbreaker if my "best 10/last 20" average is high (aiming for 75%+)?

- Is the JET Programme (a 1 year Japanese exchange program)or similar experience compensate for not very competitive grades?

- is geography a good reachable or should I change to something else (other than the sciences)?

I’d really appreciate any advice from people who’ve been in similar situations or gone through the Ontario teachers college application process.

Thanks in advance!
