Harry and Kayla are the cutest sweet hearts! They are large dogs and came in together

This is Harry. He is a 6 year old Norwegian elkhound mix and is animal ID is #A5771635. Harry is so beautiful and he reminds me of a wolf!! He has beautiful light blue eyes and such a sweet personality, he deserves so much love!!
This is Kayla. She is a 5 year old Siberian husky and her animal ID is #A5771636.
Kayla did seem a bit on the shy side but I think it's just the environment she is in.
She seems very calm and mellow and I think she would love a nice comfy couch to sleep on!!

Elkhound Pup

Hey everybody. So this is my boy Lloyd! We adopted him about a month ago, in Ontario Canada. Elkhounds are pretty rare here, have never seen another one. He was rescued from a puppy mill, and we were told hes part Elkhound and part Australian shepherd. Everyone keeps saying he's a German shepherd, but we don't think he is. Looks like an Elkhound to us, but we're not totally sure.

Anyways, this is Lloyd. He's 6 months old, and pretty stubborn, but also super smart and pretty well behaved for a pup.

Barking!

Hi all! We have a 4 month old Elkie pup. He’s an absolute dream with a beautiful personality and I love him to bits. The only issue is, barking.

Yep, I know the breed bark! I’ve multiple vocal spitz breed experience. But I am planning to show him, and I’ve been told by other show Elkie enthusiasts that “they only bark with pet owners because they let them”. He will bark non-stop, incessantly with excitement whenever we are at any event, at a show, or even if someone wants to say hello to him on the street. It’s frustration barking and excitement barking. At home he’s great, no barking or only a little while playing with our other dog.

His barking got us taken out of puppy class, we also go to ringcraft where he also barks almost nonstop still, after 5 sessions.

We have had a few trainers we know (unpaid) and a really experienced Elkhound owners try to spend a bit of time with him but they do even worse than me. He’s so excitable. We’ve tried positive reinforcement, corrections with lead, verbal corrections.

It’s making me feel very sad because I know he must get over this for show - and for us to be able to take him places with our other dog without dirty glares.

Can anyone offer some techniques? We absolutely don’t need him to never bark at all - and would never expect that - just not to bark nonstop and work himself into a state while showing, and out and about. Thanks!

We lost our incredible Margot last year at 9 years old due to metastatic cancer that had already spread all over her lungs. It was a completely shock as she had always been our healthiest dog. I’m also a CVT and really kept on top of her care.

She had the mentality of a northern breed 100%. Independent, stubborn, and definitely did not exist to please us (lol), but she was so loving and she had such an exceptional personality. We learned about Elkies through her DNA test years ago, and fell in love with the breed. I got to meet a purebred one in one of the canine agility classes we did. Shout out to Bonnie! Obsessed with her. While the pug is doing some heavy lifting on the looks side, I think the Elkie pulled a lot of weight too. I hope you guys love her unique mix as much as we did. Don’t ask how it happened LOL.

I think we mention her at least weekly how much we miss her. 9 was too young and we didn’t even get a chance to help her fight. We love you, sweetheart.

I can believe she's already 1! She is incredibly smart, adorable, and silly! Just all around a good girl and I'm proud to call her my little brat ❤️ Someone told me I should get her buttons to talk and I immediately said no, she has a lot to say and I'm afraid to know what she really thinks 🤣 She is veerry vocal, loves to bird and squirrel watch (I'm sure she could catch them if I let her lol) and her favorite thing to do is CHEW and SQUEAK her toys! My favorite feature of hers is her ears because they remind me of a foxes 🥰 As she's grown, you can definitely see more of the Sheltie mix in her but I think shes a great mix of the two !
