Some liquid culture! [Technique]

First timer here. Inoculated these from a parent liquid culture on 3/26/26 and they seem to definitely have grown! I've had them stored at about 65-75F and I'm agitating them every 3-4 days or so.

First, 300ml of water was heated in a glass pint jar with the lid off via microwave not to boiling, but just hot enough to fully dissolve 15ml of local honey inside. After the honey, and a metal blender ball, is added and the honey is dissolved (aided by rigorous stirring) it is sealed with a homemade injection port lid. After being sealed, they are placed in a presto canner. The lids are covered with foil and loosened a quarter turn. Then, they are pressure sterilized at 15psi for 30 minutes. The pressure is relieved rapidly via removing the regulator. As soon as it is safe, the lids are sealed and the jars are removed from the canner and left to cool.

(disclaimer if you recreate my process please be safe with the pressure cooker)

Then, the jars were simply injected with parent liquid culture inside an SAB following sterile protocol. After inoculated, the jars are wiped with alcohol and stirred a final time before being sent to the incubator.

Penis envy uncut (first grow, no casing layer) [actives]

This is my first grow. I’m growing penis envy uncut spawned on millet and rye berry. Substrate mix is standard CVG with a 1:2 ratio of spawn to substrate.

These have been in fruiting conditions for around 8-9 days and I still don’t see pins. I know PE is notorious for growing slow, but I just wanted to verify that it may take longer to see pins than I expected. I’m guessing those white blobs are primordia?

I’m just wondering when I’m expected to start seeing pins? Thanks!

Not a grow post, but I would love mushroom opinions on this morel mug glaze [actives]

I make handmade ceramic mugs and have been trying to hone in on a glaze combo that really captures the look of a morel. I know growing and identifying mushrooms gives people a sharp eye for texture and color, so I was curious whether this actually reads as morel to you.

[contamination] worried I didn’t do this process correctly

Alright long story short. Ordered some all in one bags and they were all clearly contaminated besides one that was questionable. I still decided to inoculate it with 10cc of golden teacher (LC). I then decided I’m just gonna make my own spawn grain, can’t be that hard right???

So I thought…

I’m going to detail my process and things I am worried about and curious if anyone with experience has some insight. All critiques welcomes. I’m just worried I put in a lot of time and money into this and it might not even work.

Alright, my process

  1. Created a filter with 3 layers of micropore tape and used 100% silicone on the other hole to act as my self-healing injection port.

  2. I boiled organic rye grain to al dente and let it drain, then filled my mason jars to around 80% full.

  3. Loosely put the lids on and covered with tinfoil then popped in my instapot pressure cooker. I made a makeshift stand for them out of an aluminum pie pan by poking a bunch of holes in it. I put a couple cups of water in and the jars were raised above it without touching.

  4. I used the sterilization function on my instapot for 2 hours and let it depressurize naturally over an hour or so.

  5. When I took them out the micropore tape was definitely damp which is my main concern, I thought the tinfoil was supposed to prevent this? I’m not totally sure

  6. I waited for them to cool down and sprayed/wiped em with 70% IPA and inoculated each with 2.5 cc of LC. (They are pints). They were still somewhat warm when I inoculated bringing me to my second worry that they weren’t cooled off enough before I injected the LC.

  7. Got them all chillin in a dark warm closet of about 72-75 degrees

[technique] Unusual Surface Growth After Low FAE — Let It Ride or Intervene?

I went on a trip, and when I got back I found this. l'm

pretty sure it was due to a lack of FAE-it's the first

time my spawn has colonized the substrate like this.

Today is day 14 since S2B, and I've already started

giving it FAE since day 11. Should I just leave it as it is, or should I

intervene in some way?

So I was out of the city for a couple of days and when I came back I found this, possible [contamination]

before leaving I moved them to a different place I suppose there was not enough airflow, now at the bottom they present a layer of puffy coating, not sure if it's mold.. and the capes they have wrinkled texture. Please help as it's my first time growing mushrooms, I hope this harvest is not ruined

[technique] First try spore swap

I got the spore print of a Wild P.cubensis from Australia

and made a spore swab on low nutrient agar and I am

happy with how good it worked not a lot of contam and a

lot of healthy growth. But i don't really know how

continue from here because all the growth looks the

same to me so kinda hard to tell which is the best and

makes sense to isolate. Should I just wait for the the growth to eventually differentiate?

Tips for keeping grow closet cold (no AC) [technique]

Wondering if anyone has any good tips on keeping a small room or closet cold when growing mushrooms. I live in an old place and we have no AC only heat.

I live in CA and the temp gets up in the high 80s all of the time, and my grow closet gets up to high 70s almost. Now that summer is right around the corner I’m getting worried about the rising temps.

I don’t have space or budget for an AC unit, but don’t want to lose everything in a hot summer day.

Any recommendations to keep the room cold? Lately I’ve been putting a big bowl of ice in there, but it’s a pain and doesn’t work that well.

Question on [actives]

I have many grows with standard CVG have had great results and some complete fails and have learned a ton. This is my first grow with CVG w horse poo added it dried field aged and pasteurized. The bigger tub seems to be doing its thing just fine some smaller tubs look like the biggerone nice

Growth started going up the walls and within the last couple days started to develop that thick white mat over the surface no signs of contamination so far (finger crossed) I have the lids removed but seemed to be drying out faster and humidity didn’t seem to be developing on the walls , so lightly put lids back on . Humidity is between 75-85 temp is between 70-85 depending on time of day and other factors. Air circulation is constant with small fan in lower corner points at the wall fae is 5min on every 30 min using positive pressure thru a heap filter. Light is on a 12/12 cycle Am I just jumping the gun and looking at the too often? And reading into something that isn’t an issue? Do I have an issue ? Have I jumped the gun on lighting and or humidity? For more context this is also first time using a tent . Do I need to keep the lids on? Since the “tent” is my environment ? The strain is JMF tested on agar before hand no issues there ratio is 1:1 in small tubs and 2:2 in big tub . Any suggestions tips or advice would be appreciated.

What kind of [contamination]

I pulled this out of a monitor tub. I assume it’s some kind of contamination. Just had a single mono tub in intense. I’m not worried about. It’s spreading to other tubs at the moment. If this is contamination, does anybody know what kind it is? I assume the whole tub is toast. was just about to go to fruiting…

[gourmet] How long does it take for substrate you've injected a liquid culture syringe into to start showing signs of mycelium growth?

I've recently bought some oyster mushroom liquid culture syringes and used them. But I'm not seeing any signs of mycelium growth. It has been around a day, soon to be two. Have I received defective ones or do I just have to wait longer? This is my first time doing something like this.
