Beginner arranger here - got a million questions

So I am looking to maybe make some arrangements of songs in my spare time. But I have no idea where to start. I’m thinking of doing slightly more niche stuff like Lilith Max and Epic, rather than the 110th Fate of Ophelia arrangement.

Firstly, what instrument do I arrange for? I know piano is probably the most common, but should I also arrange stuff for like flute and violin? Or should I do very uncommon instruments (for example, the nyckelharpa).

Secondly, if I do end up doing piano, do people like a vocal line, or do they like the melody in the right hand?

Thirdly, how many markings do I need? (As in dynamics, bowing, phrasing, stuff like that).

Fourthly, do I make the arrangements for solo instruments or try doing weird stuff like duets?

Fifthly, how much should I worry about playability (as in, for example Vivaldi Summer is absolutely brutal on flute because fingerings don’t make sense on the instrument).

Sixthly, how difficult and complex should the arrangements be? For example, just playing chords and the melody in the right hand means you lose a LOT of the complexity of the song like rhythm, countermelodies etc. But, on the other hand, I’ve also seen an arrangement where the entire melody was played with chords in the right hand and a left hand I won’t even get started on, so that was far too difficult and too complex.

Lastly, does anyone possibly have any tips? I don’t really know where to get started at all.

musescore 3 dark theme

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn't find this anywhere, please do do show me in the right direction if I've missed something.

I used to use musescore 3 for ages and it had everything I needed - almost. The more recent versions seem like dumbed down disasters and they are very dissonant with my workflow. Call me stubborn but I'm going to stick to musescore 3. Only problem is, I need a good dark mode for in musescore 3 and I just can't find anything that turns not just the menus, but the score too, into a nice soft dark theme. Before I spend hours trying to manually update the configuration files with hexcodes, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of an easier solution.

And please don't tell me to update to a newer version with score invert functionality. I would rather read through the code and make my own custom version than learn an entirely new workflow.

Musescore Pro: can all downloadable songs be transposed/edited in the software?

Firstly, I'm not here to talk about the scammy aspects. Just features.

I'm thinking of getting a Pro/Pro+ plan for one year so that I can mass download every non-official song I might want. I do like the side benefit of being able to view official scores and screenshot them for reference, but my main desire here is pieces that can be transposed/edited in the software.

I'm learning piano and planning to sing while I play, which is why I want them to be transposed to my vocal range, and edited to be a bit simpler. Is it pretty standard that the downloadable pieces can be transposed and edited? Or is it more uncommon?

Is anyone else suddenly unable to export?

Edit: solved- OS is now making me add the file extension when I save, e.g., composition.mp3 to save as MP3 file.

I never had a problem exporting any compositions until I got the 4.7 beta testing release. Now I click export, mp3 or wav, save to wherever, and nothing happens.

I've also tried exporting on 4.6 with files I hadn't worked on in the new release: still nothing.

How to create custom staff text lines?

I want to create a staff text line that says "break". It would be a quality of life improvement if I could add my custom texts and save them to my palettes instead of manually editing the text every time.

Thanks!

New just loaded first new SoundFont successfully and did "add to score" - is that it?

I was able to get Live HQ Natural SoundFont GM V3.0 for its classical guitar sound. Learned alot as I installed it via Synthesizer and now see it in my Mixer. I applied it to my score.

My question is: with that done, when I select "Classical Guitar" does it now use this new sound? Is that it? It basically replaces the old default classical guitar sound?

Also, let know if you have found a better classical guitar sound! Thanks!

Is there a way to automatically flip to the next page in sync with the slider?

I'm recording score videos. I want to have one system per page and show one page at a time, but MuseScore goes to the next page only when the slider scrolls out of sight. Which ends up showing, for instance, page 1 while page 2 plays and is partially cut off until the page transition.

Instead I want each page fully visible as the slider scrolls along. Any help is appreciated!

How to disable Note Input mode to use computer keyboard for playing

I want to play around with melodies on my computer keyboard before inputting notes into the music sheet. I disable the Note Input Mode but when I press a key on the computer keyboard, a note will be inputted into the music sheet. Is there a way to disable Note Input Mode just for playing around melodies on computer keyboard? Or do I just have to connect a MIDI (piano) keyboard everytime I want play around with melodies?

Edit: I just realized the Musescore computer keyboard input inputs like this, (Letter 'A' to input note 'A', Letter 'C' to input note 'C', and so on).....

So, I guess trying to play around with melodies or chords in MuseScore with the computer keyboard just won't work. And I would have to plug in a MIDI piano keyboard to do that.

Help adjusting spacing/padding between beams

Hi all,

I'm hoping to increase the distance between groups of notes, but after scouring the MuseScore handbook I have not been able to find a feature to do quite this.

https://preview.redd.it/skovgh92eb0h1.png?width=514&format=png&auto=webp&s=10226021eeb0314956db6661088e632b75b0af0d

For example, in the bar here, ideally there would be more space between the two quavers and the four following semiquavers, and between each of the groups of semiquavers.

I know that minimum distance between notes can be adjusted with 'padding' or the bar itself can be stretched, but I'm hoping there's a way to increase distance between different *groups* of notes for visual distinction (without necessarily changing the size of the bar itself)
