Starting a small modest clothing brand in India — beginner advice needed

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to start a small modest clothing brand mainly focused on elegant, minimal, loose-fit outfits for modest/ hijabi women.I’m starting very small through Instagram only, not a store or large production.

I’m starting very small (₹10k–20k budget), currently exploring fabrics locally and looking for reliable tailors for modest/ethnic wear stitching. Planning to start with just 2–4 designs first instead of investing heavily.

Would love honest advice from people who’ve started clothing/fashion businesses : beginner mistakes to avoid, finding good tailors/manufacturers, pricing, dead stock, and whether it’s better to begin with premium or affordable fabrics.

I’m okay with starting small and learning slowly, just trying to avoid beginner mistakes. Thank you :)

what should I do with my pants now that I’ve switched to skirts?

for the past 2 weeks I’ve been wearing only skirts and dresses and tbh I don’t think I want to go back to wearing pants. but at the same time I have so many jeans and other pants. I don’t really know what to do with them. I thought about maybe giving them away so I won’t be tempted to wear them But I’m not sure

Hey, my name is Kate and I made the decision to revert to Islam late last year after years of being unsure of my faith and beliefs. My Muslim sisters from work guided me to the Quran. I've recently started to wear the hijab and hopefully it suits me 😊🤲 Always happy for Abaya suggestions.

Dressing modestly when you don’t wear a bra?

As the title says, I am having trouble feeling modest even in my most modest of clothing, because I do not wear a bra. Sometimes I feel perfectly fine, and other times I do feel immodest even if I’m very covered up. It feels impossible to navigate and find the perfect solution. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what are some tips you can give me for such a case? I do not wear a bra due to sensory issues, but man, how a small choice can get you in your head! I have OCIA coming up and I really don’t want to feel immodest at Church. Thank you

Ways to do hair under covering so that it is comfortable to lay down?

Hello all,

I've been covering for going on 6 years now but I'm still running into the same issue- how to do my hair under my coverings in a way that makes it possible/comfortable to lay my head down. I am chronically ill & bedbound and struggling to stay sitting upright during video church meetings and such, but laying back with my hair in a bun or even braids is very painful.

I've tried soft small hair ties with hair very loose, very spread out flat against my head bun styles with pins (both traditional steels and bobby kinds), braids down two sides (cant do braid down my back). Any advice??? I wear a range of different covering styles, but most often the cap or veil most people associate with Anabaptists (I'm Mennonite). Sometimes when I'm in a lot of pain I'll just do the loosest bun to hold my hair while I get into an undercap, but undercaps strong enough to hold are getting untenable in the hot summers. My hair is I'd say halfway between thick and thin, but there is a lot of it and it comes down to my lower back.

TLDR: Looking for comfortable-to-lay-on hairstyles for under headcoverings.

My mum isn't fond of me wearing jeans. How do I convince her?

As a pakistani muslim my mum isn't strictly against them but at the same time is strictly against them. She doesn't want me wearing pants because she thinks its not appropriate and I really want a pair of jeans for college. How do I convince her or shall I just buy it and see what she says?

I thrifted this Zara dress 💜

Thrifted this Zara dress and added leggings underneath with leg warmers and ballet flats. How are you dressing modest for summer?

Modest clothes in natural fabrics?

Hello dignified dressers! I'd like to add more modest clothes to my wardrobe, but I have a preference for fabrics like bamboo, cotton, and wool. Doesn't have to be 100% but I've noticed that a lot of the modest clothes that I find online are polyester based.

Sometimes that's ok, but then sometimes I find I order clothes and they feel really plasticky or non-breathable, and it feels gross to me 🤷‍♀️

I like to wear clothing that is around a tznuit (orthodox Jewish) standard of modesty, but I'm not super strict about it. I also quite like Islamic women's clothing and this request actually came out of looking at some beautiful clothes aimed at Muslim women that unfortunately looked like the dreaded poly chiffon that seems to disagree with me.

I'd love any recs you have. And if you want to say, "it's synthetic but it's breathable", that's completely fine too 😊 I don't hate synthetics; I'm just trying to avoid disappointment and I do enjoy the feel of natural fibres.

Thank you! Have a wonderful day, whatever faith you follow and whatever fashion feels right 🤍

The freedom of cleaning out the closet, and those moments when you realize your standards have changed

Wow. I just did a massive closet clean-out - like many, I keep way too much stuff that just isn't quite right anymore - and I did not realize how freeing it would feel.

I think what surprised me when I reflected on it is how much guilt there is for me in not wearing what I have. And then it feels empowering to say yeah, no, I don't wear this because it doesn't meet my personal standards of modesty, so why do I feel guilty about not wearing it when I do have clothes that fit and work? I immediately thought of this community here because 1) the constant refrain of "wear what makes you comfortable!" was echoing in my head when I was cleaning out the closet, and 2) hearing others articulate their own standards of what is modest for them made me reflect on what is modest for me.

Probably like some of you, my commitment to modest dressing comes from a sense of religious obligation, but my faith tradition does not have set guidelines for what is "modest" (which can be a hot source of debate sometimes, haha). As I went through my clothes, I realized a few things: My personal comfort level has shifted over time. I'm no longer comfortable with sleeveless. I'm no longer comfortable with skirts above/around the knee unless it's athletic skorts/skirts for working out and I prefer longer. I realized 95% of what I wear is longer dresses with pockets and sleeves because I hate matching skirts or pants with tops that work in the morning. I feel weird sometimes wearing things perceived as "more modest" by my faith community because people link it with a "holier than thou" attitude. But in accepting my preferences for sleeve and skirt length, having pockets, and avoiding having to match things, I can keep just the clothes I really love and feel most myself in, and stop feeling guilty about not wearing things anymore.

How about you all? Any similar experiences with closet cleanouts, shifting personal modesty standards, or realizing that you have an outfit "formula" that works best for you day to day? I'd love to hear others' thoughts!

Best place to get baggy jeans?

Hello!

I try to wear skirts and dresses as much as possible. However, I've gotten a job that asks me to wear jeans, so I'm looking for the most modest jeans I can find.

Unfortunately there's a lot I see online that seem like they're only baggy in the legs and still cling to the backside.

Anyone have recommendations for jeans that aren't so fitted? I don't mind if they have a retro sort of look.
