Saw this review of MechWarrior 5 Clans

I’m new around here, and.. is this type of thing indicative of the MechWarrior community or is it more of an outlier?

edit: thanks to everyone who replied it’s very reassuring actually. You know how it can be with some gaming communities, so after seeing that review I figured I’d ask because one way or another I’d find out quick

Chargers are pretty good, actually

So have been running a new campaign recently with no imports. I hadn't played the main story in years, so I wanted a refresher before the new DLC. After I finished, I caught the bug again and kept playing till 3047, where I am pausing till CR.

anyway... one of my side goals for this run was to play mechs I didn't normally use. I am a big fan of the Battlemaster and it has always been my go-to fast assault, but this time around I wanted to give a fair shake to some others, and by far the Charger has been the standout.

The 1A1 is, of course, garbage. This was actually the first assault I managed to salvage in the game years ago and I spent way too much time trying to make it good at...anything...

I think that experience may have soured me a bit on the whole chassis. I also think I skipped over the 1A5 because it's default config seriously skimps on armor. To me, half the point of heavier mechs is fit more armor on them, I aways like to run them at max armor (shaved down to the nearest half ton). I think I filed it into the same category as the Cyclops (another mech I have slightly more respect for after this run). The 1A5 kinda rules. Max the armor, drop the AC/20 down to an LB 10-X (you should have at least one before it shows up in 3023) and you have a tough, fast (74 kph after speed upgrade), punchy mech that brawls with the best of them.

The 1P5 was also a nice surprise. initially it had many of the same issues as the 1A5, but after a few tweaks I found a very nice arena build. Just swap the AC/5 for an ultra, drop the SRM-6s down to 4s (ideally infernos), and drop the axe down to a sword then bam, a fun arena mech that can do all four damage types. I ran this until I finally snagged an HGN-VEST.

Of course there is also the otomo 3K-S, which... yeah it's good. But it's an otomo, so that kinda wasn't a surprise.

I am sure the regular 3K is good too, but since it's a 3049 mech, it now has to compete directly with Clan mechs which... no.

So this run was a lot of fun. Have I converted anyone to the cult of charger? Did any of you dismiss a mech chassis before later finding out it was much better than you thought?

What’s your pick for best mech for it’s weight?

CLARIFICATION: I mean specific weight, not weight class. Like best 45 Tonner, not best Medium.

With the new DLC coming I’m interested to know how my stacks up.

What’s your personal pick for the best mech of its weight? Bonus points for load out!

I’ll start with my main as my pick at 95t, NightStar NSR-9J w/ 2x Clan Gauss, 3x Clan ER L Laser, TAG, and Clan Active Probe. I call her Boudica.

I imported it to a new career (surprised it let me bring the Clan stuff!) and it basically feels like cheating. I can also head the Unreal Tournament “BOOM! Headshot.” during fights.

What are your thoughts on the Mad Cat MK II?

As a newer fan I have no idea what makes this better than the OG, but the thing looks like the Timberwolf and the Ebon Jaguar had a baby lol

Are lasers so powerful in the lore?

I’m not too familiar with battle tech lore. Do lasers typically out preform other weapon classes? I’ve noticed that in game a laser for a comparable tier and effective range will out damage projectile weapons and even missiles on average.

I'm a little bit heartbroken on this iron man save.

Leon got blasted during the Dragon's Gambit DLC campaign. Can I get some "Yeah!"s in the chat for our late boy? 🥀

So beautiful… makes me want to step on it

One has to appreciate the level of detail the various artists (like Mark) put into the games. They put in a lot of hard work to make scenes like this feel real. It’s a park, with a rooftop patio across the street, bike racks… it could be an environment for a human-scale game. It’s entirely likely that many or most players will never actually notice these things as they smash through them, attention placed as appropriate on some enemy mech. But stuff like this makes a game world feel lived-in.

I have plenty of criticism for the games precisely because of how lovingly crafted some parts of these games are. But one experience that put a big smile on my face was wading through an urban environment, buildings collapsing, cars crushed under foot. For one furtive moment it felt exactly like it should and I could almost suspend all disbelief. Perhaps one day there’ll be a mod to place furniture inside of buildings, so that as you literally stroll through a building at cockpit level it’s like you’re looking at a real place.

Holy shit the CLANS

I know I’m late to the game but my 390 ton lance getting shredded by a bunch of medium mechs really snaps you out of the late game complacence.

Mechwarrior games don’t always have the best story telling but the power of the clan mechs in SoK puts some visceral shock factor into the story.

Edit: also Dashers. I’ve never been so threatened by a light mech before, it’s legitimately just hard to track.

Ghost Bear drip: Assless chaps over chinos

What’s especially funny to me is that I’m about 95% sure this is canon and in a source book somewhere, given the attention to detail they put in with all the other costuming in Clans.

A bit passé that it’s coincidentally only the ladies standing with their backs 45 to the camera, poor Samuel only gets a quarter turn 😂

Coward or Bugged?

2 Orions drop down in my mission. I take one, send the lance after another. I get a lucky headshot and kill it instantly and turn around and see the other Orion die. Then I see this. How did this mech die? No internal damage at all.

I want to report this pilot to the commissariat. Because if one of my pilots ejected like this their next mission would be getting strapped on as extra armor on a Flea.

Unplayable, 3 med rifles but it shows 3 different caliber sizes.

Not even sure what mod is doing what here. actually I think its vanilla bug but still.

Unplayable.

If this has been asked before, someone just tell me and I'll take it down, but what is the ugliest 'mech? The Loaderking? The Corsair? The Annihilator? The Urbanmech? Something else? Just looking for opinions other than my own.

This salvaged Crusader wasn't done exploding (+ unexpected hanger physics)

Well over 1000 hours in the game and this is the first time I've encountered a mech continue to disassemble itself in my hanger.

Spinning the platform & watching the pieces fly & bounce around has been good fun for the past 5 minutes.

If you didn't like MW5:Clans for its tight claustrophobic close range maps and haven't tried Wolves of Tukayyid, you should consider giving it a go.
