Cool solo stay between Mammoth and Yosemite for 2 nights?

I’ll be in Mammoth this weekend through mid next week, then heading to a retreat in Yosemite that starts Friday.

Looking for a cool place to stay solo for Wednesday and Thursday night somewhere along the drive or closer to Yosemite. Open to anything unique or memorable. Cabins, hot springs spots, small towns, boutique stays, etc.

I’m 37, into good food, nature, and anything a bit off the beaten path. Don’t need luxury, just something with character or a great setting.

Would love recommendations on specific towns, stays, or even exact properties if you’ve got them.

Appreciate it 🙏

Mill or main?

I’m going up this weekend. Usually I start at Canyon. Actually I always start at Canyon. But I heard Canyon is closed.

Normally I show up early and hang out in the lodge until the lift starts spinning. Does the mill have an indoors place to hang out or am I better off going to main.

Also, im hearing conflicting reports. Some people say that when the bottom gets slushy you just go to the top and it’s awesome. Other people are saying that when the bottom gets slushy by the time you get to the top it’s all ice.

Is mammoth mountain inn the only option for ski in ski out next weekend ?!

$350/night for 3 days is a bit over my budget especially with a lot of terrain closed. I understand all ski in ski out locations are expensive , but was wondering if there is anything else that can come close for convinience and getting on lifts very quickly.

As I see from the website, eagle and canyon Lodge are closed. The village gondola is also closed, else I would have considered the village lodge, which is a bit cheaper

I do have a rental car, but just staying near the slopes with beautiful views is something I want :)

Post Office Problemo

Had a new Macbook arrive at the post office this morning. Tracking said delivered in parcel locker at 11:55am. They told me it could take a couple hours to get me the key but not it's clear it's not going to happen. Is this common? Did someone else just get a free Mac?

Couple small things ordered where in my P.O. Box today but not the key

Bike park at the end of May

Hey all, I'm thinking of going up to Mammoth with the crew the last weekend of May. Biking, not skiing.

The website says they are planning to open the bike park May 22nd, conditions permitting. What do we think the riding will be like by the end of May?

We will be looking for flow trails, nothing radical.

Thank you. I appreciate all of your wisdom, thoughts, and input.

April Skiing Review for East Coasters

My wife and 2 kids (14 and 10) spent a fabulous 5 days at Mammoth April 5-10 before the latest April dump. The conditions were awesome. I repeat awesome. Bluebird days, temps in the low 50s and over 100 trails open. We ski Snowshoe regularly in West Virgina and drive 5 hours from eastern VA to get there. The last day we skied it was -17F!!! As for Mammoth lots of people on here were talking how bad it was and save your $ come another year - but please ignore them. In east we are used to hard packed. The days in Mammoth started out skiing lower mountain heading to backside for best grilled cheese ever and then skiing afternoon upper mountain. By 2pm the upper mountain softened up and the large moguls on double blacks were so forgiving it allowed my 14yo daughter to want to try and ski successfully her first big hill double black! Also gave my 10yo son same confidence on upper mountain Dave’s, Cornice and Scottys. Conditions were amazing and we will be back. If you are considering spring skiing do not hesitate if you are travelling from east coast. Thanks Mammoth!

If you live here or come here often, you should have air emergency medical evacuation insurance

Just this week, 2 different people were so severely injured on the mountain that they had to be helicoptered out of Mammoth to get to a hospital that’s equipped to handle extreme life threatening injuries. Our hospital generally isn’t equipped for most life threatening situations, so if something like that happens, you either get put in a helicopter and get flown out, or you die. Those helicopter rides aren’t covered by standard medical insurance, and they usually cost a minimum of $25,000. Welcome to America.

These were probably the 20th or 25th helicopter evacuations that happened this winter. They happen every year because snowboarding and skiing are extremely dangerous sports. They’re also extremely fun, and people often forget how dangerous they are when they’re having fun. Never forget that when you’re riding.

I know health insurance is expensive, but getting hurt in the US is significantly more expensive. If you’re a regular skier/snowboarder, you should absolutely have normal health insurance. Just lookin out for yall

Mammoth trip April 23–26 - still worth it after Canyon Lodge closures?

With Canyon Lodge, Canyon Express, and the Village Gondola all closing tomorrow, is it still worth visiting Mammoth next weekend (April 23–26)? I'm not sure how this affects my trip. First time going, so also wondering where people usually stay this late in the season. Any tips on lodging or which areas are best would be really helpful.

Unspoken Rules

I might get some heat for this but, can we all agree to the following?

  1. Don’t take phone calls in the gondola if someone else in there with you. It’s rude. And loud.

  2. 6 ft between all skiers and snowboarders. If you wanna go high speed down a run with no human obstacles, go on the double black diamonds. Don’t put unsuspecting people at risk.

  3. Don’t play music out loud. Bring headphones. It’s not hard.

  4. Wear deodorant

I had an overall great time these last two days on the mountain but when people neglect basic etiquette I wanna scream. Anyways, be decent, be safe, and have fun out there ❄️
