If you’re trying to log into Canvas and are getting a strange pop-up or error message, don’t panic. It likely means your school’s Canvas system has been compromised or temporarily taken offline as part of a cyberattack.

At the moment, there’s no reason to stress about missed assignments, due dates, or attendance-related issues while systems are unavailable. Schools are usually aware of these situations quickly and tend to make accommodations once services are restored.

Reports online are pointing toward ShinyHunters, a well-known ransomware/extortion-focused hacking group that typically targets organizations for financial gain rather than individual students. Still, it’s a good idea to monitor your school email and official announcements for updates.

For safety:

  • Avoid entering your password into suspicious pop-ups or unofficial login pages.
  • Change your password if you think you may have entered credentials into anything unusual.
  • Enable two-factor authentication if your school offers it.
  • Keep an eye on official communications from your school or district.
  • In the worst case, the school will probably accommodate you with a new student ID...etc

PSA to Instructors: please EMAIL your students

Canvas is down. It’s been down for nearly 12 hours now. Who knows when it's going to return to normal. We all know you're not to blame for this outage and neither is the college.

That said, can you please be proactive and email your students this week's assignments, instructions, and how you will mitigate missed due dates due to the outage? Do you want homework emailed to you? Are you going to extend deadlines if the students cannot submit work on time? How will you deal with quizzes and exams?

On our end, there has been little to no communication from the college. Maybe you’re in the same boat. It’s disappointing, but unsurprising. So, it would be pretty cool if you could do one better right now.

Because, you don’t really want individual students emailing you asking about how to proceed, right?

Thanks. We appreciate you!

Canvas

My professor announced in class she got the official message that canvas is down. I was wondering if any students have received that email yet? I haven’t and I’m feeling paranoid about it because I was using canvas about an hour ago.

Thanks 🙏🏼

Looking to buy 2 tickets for Cosumnes River College Graduation

Hi all

I’m alumni and I’m looking to buy tickets for graduation because my sister is getting her AA and transferring at the end of this month.

Apparently they don’t give out any extra tickets, so I was wondering if anyone has any extra for sale. Please let me know!

Hey guys, how much students are usually taken off from waitlists from your experience? I know the advice is to just show up and it all depends on the number of students that don’t show up or drop within the first week but hypothetically what’s like the max that get in? Tysm in advance, I do appreciate it as I am curious why waitlists are 20 persons long if like not even half get in

What will happen with finals with Canvas being down?

I’ve looked in a couple of different subreddits and haven’t seen a definitive answer, I apologize in advance if it’s there and I overlooked it.

With Canvas down, aside from assignments that use an external site / I have the rubric saved for, I don’t have access to any assignment details. (Same for everyone else, ofc).

What will happen if the Canvas situation doesn’t get sorted before finals / grades are due? Will Professors just submit grades as is?

Is it safe to use canvas?

Canvas is back up and I need to do my assignments but I am also a little paranoid. I know the district said it was ok to use canvas as long as ur cautious. Is it a good idea to use it? Should I log out of the canvas app on my phone?

I knew this would likely happen. I’m not able to register until May 5th. This is the last class I need until I’m eligible to apply for nursing programs.

Is anyone else still waiting to enroll? Was anyone waitlisted and able to get into the class previously? What are my odds? Thanks.

Hey everyone,

I'll keep it real — growing up I never thought college was for me. I struggled in school, had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and ended up dropping out after just 2 semesters. That was 10 years ago.

But I'm back. I'm attending Los Rios to eventually transfer to Sac State and earn a BS in Construction Management, and honestly? This is the first time in my life I've actually felt ready and excited about school.

Not gonna lie, it's still intimidating af — but I'm doing it anyway.

I wanted to get the community's thoughts on my class schedule. I'm also 1st on the waitlist for Business Law, and if I get in, I'm considering dropping another class to keep my workload manageable. After a 10-year gap, the last thing I want to do is bite off more than I can chew and psych myself out before I even get started.

Any advice is appreciated — thanks in advance! 🙏

Also, the math prep lab is to help prepare me for trigonometry in the spring.

I have one class left in my degree program. I am not sure I will get into it as the classes are full and the waitlists are almost full. I register on Monday. Any suggestions or too bad hopefully better luck next time?

How likely is it that I will get off the waitlist (19th) for comm c1000 :((( Is it common that they allow everyone off the list, or is there a hard cutoff for class size? I am taking it at the Natomas Center with Marialana Vieira for more context.
