Hi everyone! Forgive me if I say anything ignorant in this post as I’m still learning about locs and loc maintenance.
Background: My boyfriend got two strand twists (with a starting braid) about a month ago so that he can start his locs. We both knew it would be a lot of time and maintenance and so we both researched beforehand. However a lot of the information that came up was either for twist outs or for locs that had already loc’d. His hair is starting to loc a bit and is also growing out so after watching a lot of tutorials, he wants me to retwist for him (we’re low income so we both agreed it’s better to learn how to do it ourselves). He works a hard outside job so there’s bound to be a lot of buildup and growth and I was wondering specifically:
Is it okay to do a detox with apple cider vinegar/baking soda and a clarifying shampoo even though they haven’t fully loc’d yet? How long should we wait for his hair to grow out before retesting (all I know you shouldn’t be too proactive with retwisting because it can cause thinning)?
Any other tips?
