What is the DJ set you witnessed in London that you still think about and that you would struggle to describe to someone who was not there because the experience was so specific to being in that room at that moment?

Not a famous set that got recorded and shared everywhere. The one that existed only for the people who were present. The one where the room, the sound, the moment and the music aligned in a way that cannot be recreated or fully explained after the fact. What was it ?

mau p - disappointed

i was soooo excited to see mau p for the first time at the roundhouse 09/05 because i love his songs, but i was a bit disappointed when he played maybe 4 of his hits, and the rest was generic house filler beats. i stayed till the end and still had a good time but can’t help but feel a bit disappointed - anyone else?

Is the Dry Rave becoming the new standard? Why am I seeing more 0.0% beers than water bottles?

I saw the latest industry report saying that 40% of us aren't drinking at raves anymore, and the clubs like Phonox and Fabric are seriously levelling up their non-alcoholic game to stay afloat. I’m not sure if it’s the cost of living bite or just a general shift toward actually remembering the set the next morning. Has anyone else noticed the vibe on the dancefloor changing? Is it more serious dancing now, or does it feel a bit more like a fitness class than a party?

I miss when nights out felt slightly less content-focused

Feels like some people now experience the whole rave through their phone camera instead of actually being present in the moment. Might sound old but the vibe genuinely changes because of it.

Smoking inside venues

Why is it so normal again to smoke inside venues? It seems like it’s so normalized to smoke in indoors venues and as someone with asthma it’s really frustrating.
I love to be in the crowd dancing but nowadays I keep having to move to the outskirts because it seems like most people smoke/vape inside and it makes it difficult to breathe while dancing. I also can’t stay as long as I would like at events because the space fills up with smoke.
I just want to bring awareness to this because I don’t think people realize the impact this can have, and think it’s just vaping it’s fine, but it’s still smoke, and unfortunately venues, that I’m guessing have no smoking indoors policies, don’t enforce them. And I say this but I don’t even know how they would because it’s the majority of people at this point. Can we bring back taking smoke breaks outside pls for asthmatic ravers that also want to rave all night? 🫶🫶

Edit: just to clarify by smoking I mean vapes and iqos, not lighting up a cigarette, but tbh iqos is not much different

Anyone else go to this the other day? Vibes were really off, security were really intense in and around the venue.. also not having a few sets outside was such a let down.

Last time I went to The Cause it was sick.. dunno if i'd be rushing back now

UPDATE: Visiting May 1 to 9, already bought tickets to 3 events: What should I know?

Original post here.

***

Hey all. I posted a few weeks ago and got some good advice so I figured I should follow up with a little review / recap thread.

Here are the three events I went to...

The first event of my visit and it was kind of a bust. The reason I was in town was because I was attending a conference at Excel... The Cause was a convenient walk from Excel, but I had to try to awkwardly thread the needle of dressing professionally enough for my conference but not looking like a total dork at the show. I didn't really succeed, mainly because it was so warm. I think it was around 24 degrees. All the lads were popping their shirts off. Seemed like crowd was very young and very white. Sound was good and it was a cool venue but I wasn't in the headspace for it. Left after about 90 minutes.

This was a lot of fun. I showed up at 10:57 p.m. because I knew I didn't have it in my little American heart to go too late, and Patrice Baumel was advertised as "All Night Long" (a bit misleading), so I figured I'd watch a few hours of him and depart at the respectable hour of 2 or 3 a.m. Turns out Room 2 didn't open until midnight, so I watched Gregor Tresher in Room 1 for the first hour of the night. I don't know if I've ever shown up at club the minute it opened before. It was a little awkward, maybe, but it was nice to be able to explore and settle in before it got packed. I didn't find the layout terribly confusing, but maybe that's just because I was able to get the lay of the land first.

Anyway, at midnight I moved over to Room 2 and had a great time grooving to Patrice's set. Sound was great, and I thought the crowd was good, though people really do be yapping. A few rude people shoved past me on the dance floor but it was nothing compared to Los Angeles, where that is a constant occurrence. Never got too crowded while I was there and I was able to scoot my way toward the front on a couple of occasions. Was really a treat to watch Patrice work and he was really interacting with the crowd... Though it would be hard not to in such an intimate room.

At one point, I was right at the front, and the dude next to me—who was very clearly on one—said, "Hey, save my spot, I'll be right back" and I was just like "Uh, sure." I thought that was pretty amusing—I don't think you can really save spots at the club. He didn't return for over 20 minutes and I'd moved to a different area, so I didn't feel bad about it.

Left at around 2:30 and walked over 2 miles back to my hotel because I was buzzing. Had a great time. Everything I read online said that London crowds get much better after 4 a.m.; unfortunately, I wasn't able to experience that. But I thought this event and this crowd was pretty damn good.

Man, this was cool. I didn't really spend too much time looking into the concept of PHOTON beforehand, but I quickly grasped it was something like this: doing the most with the least. Simple spotlights and strobes, controlled precisely. It's really amazing how much you can get out of seemingly simple lighting rigs these days. The venue was awesome and seemed perfectly suited to the event. God, it was loud, though. For a while I was house left, pretty close to the front, and my ears hurt even though I had earplugs in the entire time. It was pretty satisfying when the bass would rattle every atom in your body, though. Eventually I made my way to the back and watched most of Ben Klock's set from various positions in the back, house right. I got pretty tired and was going to leave a bit early, but then I realized I could just lean against the railing behind the lighting crew and watch them work... So I did that for a little bit; very cool experience.

Oh, and they probably ought to not allow people to bring drinks onto the dance floor here. It was the stickiest dance floor I encountered and it seemed like every time I turned around, someone else was spilling their drink.

Lastly, no Fold for me... I bought tickets to go on the Friday that I arrived, but I was too jetlagged. I slept for like 12 hours instead. Maybe next time! Thanks to everyone who chimed in on the last thread. Really appreciated your advice.

April Dancefloor Report

Hi all, back with the Dancefloor Report for April.

Kept it more simple this round. I might switch this up to quarterly too so it doesn’t start to feel stale.

April highlights: 5.46 million total steps, 549 hours combined on the dancefloor, and an average session of 16.2K steps over 4h 17m.

One thing I found interesting this month was breaking the data down by age. Ravers in their early 30s danced the hardest per minute by a clear margin, outpacing both the 20-somethings and the 35+ crowd on intensity. Meanwhile, the under-25s actually stayed on the floor the longest, just at a gentler pace.

I think younger ravers aren’t dancing less, they’re learning. The more raves you go to, the more you start to find your groove. I remember when I first started raving, I only knew how to jump up and down. Then it slowly evolved into hands in the air, hand flicks, and so on. Eventually, if you rave enough, you find your groove.

We're performing a set at a venue in Vauxhall, London, part of our performance is to smoke on stage, which is considered an indoor public place under the smoking ban in that country since its fully inside.

After negotiation with the venue (I offered to pay both our fine and the venues if Westminster & City Council issue it) there was concern around licencing if they blindly agreed, however they have consulted with their legal advisor and we can go ahead.

The fine is up to £2500 for the venue and £50 per head for us. There is an exemption in the smoking ban for artistic performances which include smoking as context and we have notified the council of this, but as far as we've been informed the fine will still be issued if reported on the night and we appeal, with no effect on the venue so we have been given the go ahead. It is partly in protest to newer laws on my British partner's side banning the choice to smoke for new generation adults going forward and taxing & restricting vapes for people who have and want to give up cigarettes. Whilst we can't encourage people to follow and the fine would be on your head in the extremely unlikely event someone from the council turns up and captures your details, the audience is welcome to light up.

A lot of red tape, but we believe adult venues should come with freedom of choice and while it is against the law, it can also be settled with money and so that's what we'll do, we did ask our event goers on Facebook too and had overwhelming support to do it.

I'm really looking forward to visiting London and really overwhelmed by the number of people who want to come and listen to us. Its a wonderful city.

I’m a 34 year old guy, a couple of months out of a serious relationship and feel like doing out for a dance tonight, no intention to try and hit on anyone, just listen to some great tunes and move my body. It’s the first time I’ve felt like doing anything for a while so I want to take advantage of the mood while I have it.

What are the best clubs for a guy like me to go dancing without it looking weird or creepy in NE or East London? Or does it look dodgy, will I be turned away at the door?
