Been commuting here for more than half of my life, this was a first tonight

I preferred the person burning incense on the train car I was on earlier this week, tbh.

LIRR Strike Confession..

I know how bad the strike will be for all parties involved. CUNY finals are that week. Not everyone works at a company that allows them to WFH. Not everyone has a job that even has a WFH option. And there are plenty more reasons as to why the LIRR not running would be a huge disruption and inconvenience to commuters.

But man.. I want this strike to happen. I am lucky enough to work at a company that will allow me to WFH, and I'm tired of going into the office. I just want a few days off from commuting, that's all. This would be the perfect, legitimate excuse. Also lining up with a long weekend is the cherry on top.

I'm sorry I know not everyone is in my situation. I'm just tired.

You can downvote me for this unpopular opinion, and I will understand why you did. But wondering if anyone else feels the same.

Uptick of unticketed riders locking themselves in the bathrooms

Seems like literally every day now, all of the bathrooms on the Ronkonkoma line eastbound are permanently locked. I go from car to car, and I can hear people shuffling around in there, so I know it's folks just looking to avoid the fare. I know it's high and times are tough all around, but seems like an awful way to go from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma Station. It always happened from time to time, but it's way worse under the new pricing structure.

There's just got to be a better, less demoralizing way. AND I have to stop drinking this much coffee in the morning and just consider there ARE no bathrooms on the train anymore. Is anyone else seeing this on their commute?

LIRR Strike

How many people think the strike is actually going to happen? Because last time they said the same thing and delayed in for months. I’m hoping it’s the same thing this time. And does anyone know when they’re planning to send out the schedules for the shuttle buses?

LIRR Strike

Is the strike really going to happen? I really need to be in the city on Monday and have no other way of getting there other than the train. Super worried 🥲

In case of a strike, use these limited Peak Hour Shuttle Buses, NICE/SCT buses, and/or drop-offs at subway stations to get to work. Work from Home IF POSSIBLE.

A friendly post to say, STFU

I obviously cannot tell a person to STFU on the train, only if they’re being rude and directed at me.

But with all due respect, some of you on the morning commute really talk way too much. And I would love to tell you to STFU.

I have so much respect for people but some of you with your morning commute groups, you travel all the way to Grand Central laughing your asses off, totally disregarding all those around you.

What makes matters worst, I have noise canceling headphones and some of you are way too loud, I can still hear you.

I find it disrespectful. I find it rude. How do you get on a train and start chatting like you’re inside a bar. You enter the train and start chatting above normal noise levels.

Another issue, some of you that play games on your phone. Turn the volume down! Why on earth do you think everyone around you wants to hear your stupid candy crush audio?

And your phone conversations on speaker? Just why? Why do you want others in your business?

Like, honestly, I don’t care who you are. But have some respect for all those around you. Some of us just want to read and listen to their audio in their ears in peace.

Take this advice: STFU.

LIRR has and is undergoing expansion, especially the 'historic' opening of Grand Central and infrastructure upgrades, like the extra tracks to Hicksville and Ronkonkoma, that, according to the MTA and also stated in the PEBs, resulted in a 40% increase in service but against a net increase of 16% in manpower for engineers. This begs the question, how does the LIRR cover the extra service without the required manpower?

If it isn't obvious, paying the overtime. This is also stated in the PEBs.

This is a classic example of deflecting mismanagement by pinning blame on labor. The MTA/LIRR already knew of their manpower needs but missed their targets. The overtime is a temporary solution to a hiring/manpower problem.

For the MTA/LIRR to go and stab their laborers in the back on their PR campaign against them by using yearly compensation as evidence they are well compensated is incredibly disengenuous. Labor stepped up to cover the extra shifts, voluntarily or forced, to cover the LIRR's manpower issues. As more labor is hired, the overtime will subside.

Having said that, this does not ignore the fact that the laborers of LIRR are not immune to changes in the cost of living due to consecutive, year over year, high inflationtary periods, especially high COLA of NY. They are also feeling the pain as is everyone else of higher costs on basically everything.

If fares are going to go up, it is not because labor is demanding a reasonable and proper wage adjustment to keep up with cost of living, fares are going to go up because everything is going up due to inflation.

If LIRR goes on strike, the blame is on the MTA and the current climate of high inflation. It is not unreasonable to understand that labor is not going to be okay with seeing their wages get chipped away at by accepting a wage adjustment that amounts to a pay cut.

Crazy how the LIRR has a sophisticated system to ensure every passenger pays their fare, but the trains still break down every day!!!

The LIRR has its priorities wrong. It’s way more focused on securing as much money as possible, instead of making sure passengers have a reliable public transportation system!!!

I’ve had to call a dozen cabs because of a train break down. I’ve been late to work countless times because of a train break down. I’ve missed doctor appointments because of a train break down and the list goes on!!! But they still charge us out of our asses to use this shitty train????

I wanna go on a LI passenger strike lol

Train left before time

Is this acceptable? I take a westbound train from Mastic/Shirley and the 7:11 train left at 7:08am. I was just parking my vehicle. I believe this is unfair. Departure time is 7:11am. Especially for trains out here, they rarely pass. Next train for work would be 7:30am but now I’m not making it until 10:05am because I have to make two transfers. I’m highly annoyed this morning with the conductor of that train. Aren’t they suppose to wait until departure time?

Learned something new this week

Learned something new this week

I'm not a LIRR commuter so I'm totally unfamiliar with many aspects of commuting. I pulled into a municipal lot, was driving looking for a spot and saw several of these signs. I thought they meant "Tow Away Zone."

These sign were everywhere and I was concerned about getting towed. I saw another guy and asked him where I could park. I felt pretty silly when he told me what the signs meant.

Am I the only one who didn't know this?

LIRR Strike?

If the LIRR does go on strike starting May 16th, how long do we think this will last for? Kids have finals starting May 16 as well.

What time would trains stop on Saturday night?

If the strike happens, what would be the last train to leave Penn station on Saturday evening?

Going to the Springsteen concert and would like to prepare in advance

I’ve heard a lot of rumblings about a potential labor strike/walkout on the LIRR. While I support the workers, I’m worried that this could increase my fare even more.

Why don’t they raise taxes on the wealthy to cover this instead of putting workers and commuters at odds with each other?

What can we do collectively to stop this?
