Strengthening the quad

I’m 4 months post op and doing great. Yesterday I took a step up on my new knee and it gave a little wonky hey I’m not that strong quiver. I’ve never had that happen. I’m wondering if it’s because I need to strengthen my quad more? Nothing has changed in my routine at all. No pain or discomfort, just a random jelly knee moment. 🤔

I am still in significant pain most of the time from the moment I get out of bed in the morning. What worries me is the swelling really limits my range of motion. I have to really stretch the knee to do any real sitting (movie, sit in car) and have to take a prescription anti-inflammatory every day still. I just got up, went to a gas station to buy a gallon of milk. My knee was angry I carried that gallon of milk back to the car. Painful. I still do PT every day. My new knee is about two inches bigger in circumference than my human knee. I had the procedure done at the Mayo Clinic. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Update on DVT post (blood clots)

TL;DR I knew I had a blood clot, docs sent me home twice. I indeed had a blood clot. 30 day post op

Friday, I had onset calf pain, a charley horse that won’t let up, exactly as they warned me about pre/post surgery. It was impossible to control the pain all night into sat afternoon. I called the after hours doc and they sent me to the ER. They didn’t have a radiologist on staff on the weekend in my tiny town ER :/ but they ran a blood clot test looking for ddimer, mine was pretty high (1330 ng/ml feu) for 30 days post TKR. The ER doc managed my pain, called my surgeon, but said they weren’t worried even tho the number was high because I already had a follow up scheduled with my surgeon the following Monday.

Monday Follow up surgeon checked my joint because I’m having seperate issues due to the complications, then he quickly scanned my leg, didn’t think calf pain was a big deal. He ended the conversation with a tiny insult referencing my anxiety pre-surgery. When he mentioned anxiety, I shut down angry.

Several other surgeons in the same hospital were vocally nervous about the high risk I faced because of my previous three leg bone surgeries. I chose him because he had a good plan, he is the top in his field in my area. This is my 11th major surgery, it’s the 4th invasive surgery in the last 3 years. I was nervous pre surgery, for a host of reasons! No matter, I was appropriately anxious and shared it with him. My surgery went good, my scar and swelling is nil. I have a long road ahead but so far it’s all as expected according to the doc.

By Tuesday, it still felt like a calf muscle tear with each step. I called again and told them I can’t take it anymore and this time they called back and sent me to get an ultrasound.

Today I drove for the first time post op to the hospitals radiology department. JFC the tech pushed down on the spot where it hurts with the machine and I nearly jumped off table. It was excruciating, I cried and yea, it was a blood clot. Turns out they are pretty fucking common post knee surgery.

Anyway, fight for your rights peoples. It’s easy to accept doctors when they tell you that you’re wrong. I’m always right when it comes to my body, but somehow i fall for doctors that gaslight me. I feel stupid for not listening to my body.

support for replacement patient

Hi! My best friends mom (52) had her knee replaced and I’ve been helping her since my friend is in school. I’ve taken her to a couple PT appointments and she is starting to go very stir crazy. What activities could ld I do with her? My friend will be home may 3. She’s 3 weeks post op. Just looking for ideas.

Thanks in advance!

32F PKR scheduled for August. What do you wish you did to prepare?

Hi there!

This group has helped me a lot as far as finally making the decision to proceed with surgery. I have a partial knee replacement scheduled for August this year pending my recent MRI results don't show that I need a TKR. This will probably be my first of two with a TKR on my other knee to come next year.

My question - what do you wish you did differently going into your surgery, or what did you do that you think helped with recovery? I work a desk job but I have put in for short term disability so I can prioritize PT and R&R post op. Right now exercise wise I am able to do light yoga/pilates (still sometimes painful) and upper body. Previously was extremely active, weightlifting daily, running, the works (former college soccer player, being active is a priority for me and my mental health has suffered with my knee deteriorating) - so I am really hoping to be able to get back to that in some capacity, or at least live a normal life as a 30 year old without my knees holding me back.

If you had a partial specifically, what did your mobility level look like about a month after? I work in sports, so the timing of this prior to football season is not ideal but I had few other options.

Thank you for any feedback!

Walking at 8 weeks

Is anyone else finding they get a really tight band around their knee after even only a few steps of walking. Walking seems to aggravate my knee pain. Stretching and bike don’t. Anyone else in this situation?

My Dad Is Getting Knee Replacement Surgery Soon

Hi all,

Next month my father is getting knee replacement surgery. He’s 66 years old, and he said that he has “crushed tendons”. He’s very worried about the surgery and the outcome, as no one who he spoke to had the same issue following a knee replacement. I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar issue and how your recovery was?

On top of that, I’m open to any advice for taking care of my dad after surgery. I’m not sure what to expect, I don’t know how much care he’s going to need.

Thank you guys
