Need someone to learn Kashmiri
I'm an 18 yr old guy from a Kashmiri Pandit family from Delhi and I'm currently studying in Bangalore but I was never taught the language fluently at home cuz my grandmother died shortly after the exodus and grandfather is too old but he told me stories about his youth in Kashmir. My parents are not very fluent either as they spent most of their life outside the valley and never taught me, i just heard it being spoken occasionally by family elders and know some basic words but I've decided to learn it fluently, I don't know the Nastaliq script and will consider learning the language in Devnagari later but want to learn it in the Latin script first and i need some fluent native speakers to help me by teaching me how to use the language in daily real life situations. My family would also be happy when I speak fluent Kashmiri when i return home.
Namaste,
I have been struggling to find a suitable gift for my friend, She is kashmiri pandit and been in Jammu for sometime. Currently she is there for few months. They had to move from kashmir because of insurgency. She care a lot about the kashmiri culture, I was initally thinking of giving samavar, but that I have already planning to bring at her home when i visit(Not sure if that is good idea..)
I want to give something which is personal to kashmiri's people, feels like kashmir, like a home. shawl(I have already gifted), saffron would not be a good idea as she wont like it,
I was thinking of playing a kashmiri song on guitar but i am not that fluent currently, too rusty. Too behind in the course.
A bit context about her: she is in her late 20s. She is very attached to her family, Respects her culture, really love his father and respect her mother. Her dream are about her providing for her family. In short very family oriented person. She is mature, really smart, very competitive and as gorgeous an angel. She likes to read but that i have already covered.

Kashmiri Khatris
Hi just wanted to know if there is any Kashmiri Khatri in this subreddit? How different are they from Punjabi Khatris? Do they speak Koshur, Dogri or Punjabi? What relation do they have with Kashmiri Pandits? Thanks
Looking to Connect with Someone from our Community
Hi everyone! I’m a 24(M)Kashmiri Hindu, currently working in Cyber Hub and based in Gurugram.
I really value family, culture, and staying connected to my roots, while also being someone who’s always down for coffee plans (sorry chai gang 😭😭).
Thought I’d put myself out here and see if someone (F) from the community would be open to connecting and getting to know each other.
If that sounds nice, my DMs are open :)
Thank you!
Sheer/Noon Chai in Berkeley, California
Came across a tea shop in Berkeley serving noon chai. Had to try it.
Heya! Introduction.
Heya guys! Orzu! Just wanted to introduce myself - I am a 26Y old guy in Hyderabad. Saw a lot of posts about some help needed learning Koshur, or in general knowing and learning about the culture. I’d like to be of help here (if I can). Shoot away! Or yk, just discuss anything!
Would love to hear more personal stories from people here.
Hey everyone, I came across this subreddit and it made me feel like there are probably a lot of Kashmiri Pandits here, but the space is pretty quiet. I’ve always found it really meaningful how people still hold on to their roots even after being spread out in different parts of India and abroad. It would be nice if this space could be used more often to share personal stories and memories, like where families ended up after leaving Kashmir, the traditions or rituals that are still followed at home, or even small things heard from parents and grandparents growing up. And if anyone has ever gone back to the valley with family, it would be really interesting to hear what that experience felt like. Just feels like there are a lot of stories here that don’t get shared often.
Regarding The Origin and etomology of word Kashmir
origin of the name of Kashmir have been a center of historical and linguistic debate for centuries. And etomology of it's name is even till now been debated, let's dive into the rabbit hole.
Regarding the origin of the name kashmir have many theory lets take a look at them:-
Kashyapa theory:- this dosent need an introduction, This mystical story is from Nilmat Purana which was written in 7th century.
Kashmir - Dessiociated land, this theory originated from Nilmaya purana that Kashmira is from "Ka" and "Shemira" meaning Dryed up land. This theory has its own problems because there is no direct word in sanskrit for "drying" as "shmira".
Unandi sutra:- this text got importance in recent times. Unandi sutra was written on sanskrit grammer. Many historians across centuries commented on unandi and binding up all, we could conclude that from 4.30 to 4.32 it has reference to kashmira name etomology. it states that Kashmira means "a place worth visiting to" or " a place kings go to rule".
This another theory is that for Saffron sanskrit name is "Kashmira" so kashmir maybe got its name after saffron.
Now time for another version, this theory states that Kasiya was a name of a buddhist saint from whom kashmir got its name, so kashmira means Kasiya's garden.
Babur's theory:- Another one, it was propagated by babur. He said " a hill kingdom along himilayas is inhibited by a race of men called kas'" he also added that kashmir got its namen from this Kash/Kush tribe who were originally central asian. He said there are many places name after Kush across middle east, central asia and Himilayas like Hindu Kush, Koshmar in central asia, Kashmar,Kashi, Kashiya, Kashtwar etc.
Some people pointed out that Kash/Kush was the name of the son of Noah but this feels exaurated.
This theory states that kashmir which in local language is called as "Kasheir" originates from a Hebrew word meaning "Like syria". This theory is mostly propagated by the people who believe some lost tribes of isreal settled in Kashmir
Another theory says Kashmira is originated from Sanskrit word meaning "channels of water" or mountain, This theory needs further analysis
Another theory is that Kashmir gets it's name from the Himilayan tribe Khashas. There are many communities across himalayas in himachal, Uttarakhand and Nepal. Some believed before the arrival of Indo Aryans, Himalaya was inhibited by Alleged East Asian community called as Khas or Khasa, kind of similar compare to Babur's Hypothesis.
Another theory is that Kashmira is from a Sanskrit name meaning Lord's palace. This theory also need further research.
Now This theory is quite interesting, This theory was pointed out by some linguistics that Kashmir name might have old dardic roots like in shina/khowar it's "Kashir" ka in older dardic traditions means water and "ier" is associated with people. In kashmiri "Kashmir" is "kasheir". So acc to this theory Sanskrit might have bought the word from Burushaski/shina.
Now Last theory of our chapter links origin of Kashmir to Achemid Pre Islamic empire and messapotamia which is already too far fetched so skip this....
