Question for Third-Country Students: Health Insurance

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m currently gathering my documents to apply for an Austrian residence permit from a Third-Country. I’ll be heading to FH Wels soon to start the International Foundation Programme (IFP)!

I’m trying to get the health insurance part 100% correct for my application. From my research, it looks like I need a two-step approach:

  • Travel Insurance for the initial entry/gap period.
  • ÖGK Student Insurance once I actually arrive and register at the uni.

My question: For those who have applied from a third country, how many months of travel insurance did you show for your initial application to satisfy the Embassy? Also, did you just include a "Statement of Intent" saying you'd switch to ÖGK after registration?

If you have any tips on specific providers that worked for your visa or advice on the Wels ÖGK office, I’d really appreciate it! 🙏✨

how often does JKU offer an extension on the deadline...like mine is may 25th to submit all the reqd docs but i cant submit one of them by that date so im deciding to email 'em whether they can provide me with extension...
how much of a chance(in %) is there for JKU to offer extension on submitting of the docs?

Thanks in advance!

We (2 people) have acquired a unfurnished flat for the rental at the start of September 2026 in Linz. We want to give out the living room (That is well separated from other spaces in the house, almost like a private room) as a shared room to 2 people, which would help reduce costs for everyone at a fair price. Some points that you may want to know

We are not brokers and we do not gain extra money out of this (I have been as transparent as possible below). This will be a deal with a landlord directly, whom we have personally verified. We are looking for people who have completed all the steps of the process and just need to get their RP done.

  1. The location is about 20 min via tram to JKU. Center of Linz
  2. This is a 2 room, 1 living room apartment. Since the 2 separate rooms are small, we would be occupying them (Since we have the benefit of finding the accommodation). The proposal is for the other living room. Total size of the house is around 70-80m2
  3. There is one bathroom and one toilet. One storage room as well.
  4. The living room is significantly bigger compared to the other 2 rooms. 25 m2(living room) vs 12m2 vs 10m2. Considering that this living room would be a shared space among 2 people, we are pricing this room to be much lower than our rooms. A balcony is also present attached to the living room.
  5. The rent starts from September only
  6. The rent for each person in this shared room would be 245-300 EUR (depending on the electricity and wifi costs; 245 qualifying for the rent only and the remaining 55 Euros taking the electricity and wifi costs into consideration). I call this a fair deal because we would be bearing higher costs.
  7. The refundable deposit would however be split equally for an amount around 850-900 EUR, which has to be provided for the rental agreement.
  8. A very important condition is there you will have to stay for at least a year, after which you can terminate the contract giving a notice period of three months (not our rule; but an ask from the owner as a part of the rental agreement.)
  9. We both are Indians and we do not mind other internationals.
  10. The living room is mostly separate. It has a door towards at the entrance, which separates it from other 2 rooms. Bathroom and toilet being common to all. The only other way to the living room would be the kitchen, which can also be closed by using a paravent/screen.

Reply if interested. (Please ensure that you have sorted all the documents for RP out)

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student and I recently received admission to the Bachelor’s in Artificial Intelligence at Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU), Austria.

However, my admission letter says that before full admission I need to complete supplementary exams in Mathematics, Physics, and History.

I had a few questions for students who have gone through this process:

  1. Are these supplementary exams difficult to pass?

  2. Is the syllabus very hard or manageable with proper study?

  3. Would self-study be enough, or is it better to join the preparatory courses in Austria?

  4. On the website/letter it says that successful completion of the preparatory course is considered equivalent to passing the supplementary exams. Is that actually true? What exactly does that mean in practice?

  5. Which option would you personally recommend: self-study + direct exams, or the preparatory course?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has studied at JKU or gone through the Austrian supplementary exam system.

Thanks!

So I've sent request to hella dorms so far and they're either ignoring or rejecting me. Renting apartments would be too much expensive for me alone, so idk what to do actually. Maybe someone knows dorms available? I wanted a private bathroom previously, and now I want at least something, lol

Hello,

We (3 people), upcoming international masters student at JKU and on at FH Upper Austria, have acquired an apartment for rental at the start of September 2026 in Linz. We want to give out the living room (that is well separated from other spaces in the house, almost like a double room) as a shared room to 1 person, which would help reduce costs for everyone at a fair price. This room already has one taker so we need just one more.

Some points that you may want to know

We are not brokers and we do not gain extra money out of this (I have been as transparent as possible below). This will be a deal with a landlord directly, whom we have personally verified. We are looking for people who have completed all the steps of the process and just need to get their RP done.

  1. The location is about 30 min via tram to JKU.

  2. This is a 2 room, 1 living room apartment. Since the 2 separate rooms are small, only one person can live in each. The proposal is for the other living room. Total size of the house is around 70-80 m2

  3. There is one bathroom and one toilet. One storage room as well.

  4. The living room is significantly bigger compared to the other 2 rooms. 25 m2 (living room) vs 12 m2 vs 10 m2. Considering that this living room would be a shared space among 2 people, we are pricing this room much lower than our rooms. A balcony is also present attached to the living room.

  5. The rent starts from September only

  6. The rent for each person in this shared room would be 245-300 EUR (depending on the electricity and wifi costs; 245 qualifying for the rent only and the remaining 55 Euros taking electricity and wifi costs into consideration). I call this a fair deal because we would be bearing higher costs.

  7. The refundable deposit would however be split equally for an amount around 825 EUR plus the conversion fee, whatever that is divided among four of us, which has to be provided for the rental agreement.

  8. A very important condition is that you will have to stay for at least a year, after which you can terminate the contract by giving a notice period of three months (not our rule, but an ask from the owner as a part of the rental agreement).

  9. We are Indians and we do not mind other internationals.

  10. The living room is mostly separate. It has a door towards the entrance, which separates it from the other 2 rooms. Bathroom and toilet being common to all. The only other way to the living room would be the kitchen, which can also be closed by using a paravent/screen. The living room is not visible from the kitchen.

  11. The flat is unfurnished so bed, table, chair etc. will have to be bought or rented by each individual as per their need. The flat also does not have a dishwasher and dryer.

Reply if interested. Please ensure that you have sorted all the documents for RP out. Feel free to ask any questions and once we have all the tenants, will request the landlord to have a video call once again for a chat and view of the apartment.

Regards,

Pragyan
