Vietnamese Coffee guide
Last November, I traveled to Vietnam, and ever since, I’ve fallen in love with brewing coffee. I even took a coffee-making class in Hoi An. I brought back plenty of coffee along with a phin filter—just enough to get started.
I’m sharing the recipes I learned there, and I hope you give them a try too.
This is the class I took in Hoi An, in case you’re traveling to Vietnam: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/826474?viralityEntryPoint=2&s=76
And if you’re wondering which Indian beans to use, go for Blue Tokai (pour-over grind) or Third Wave’s Vienna Roast (medium grind) these grind sizes are perfect for phin.
P.S. I don’t have a grinder yet, so I usually get pre-ground coffee.
Cheers, and happy brewing ☕️
Reviews on this. Getting it for 2500. Is it worth/a good deal?
HELP needed with V60. Coffee tastes like tablets.
I'm new to V60. Trying the updated 1 cup Hoffman technique.
No matter what I do, I couldn't get the Naivo Dragon Jam beans to taste anything close to what they taste like from my French press or Moka pot.
It tastes sour, bitter, rough and dry on the tongue.
Wasted close to 100 grams of beans in these 2 days.
I tried adjusting the grind size, temperature, number of pours etc.
68 clicks is my recent grind setting on the Q Air.
I've tried coarser and finer.
On courser grind the coffee tastes watery and sour.
On finer grind it has the body but tastes extremely bitter. I can only taste bitter.
I'm keeping the temperature between 90 and 95 degrees.
At 68 clicks I'm getting 2:25 minutes drawdown.
(Attaching pic of what the bed looks like after drawdown, from my last brew)
13g coffee, 180ml water for 1:14 ratio.
To the V60 experts, please let me know where I'm going wrong.
Lavazza Gusto Crema - am I expecting too much?
So ran out of coffee, and ordered Lavazza Gusto Crema. Brewed the first cup today, and honestly, got disappointed.
- Roast is pretty uneven
- Packet claims Medium-Dark roast, but beans look like a Dark roast only with a handfuls of light beans tossed in.. lol
- Grinded with Kingrinder @ 50 clicks, brewed espresso with Delonghi Dedica and made a milk latte. Espresso has a ‘burnt’ taste which overpowers the good aromas of coffee which I have had before.
Question to the espresso experts -
Is this normal to expect from Lavazza, or am I expecting too much from Lavazza?
Any suggestions to make the brew better… :)
THOUGHTS ON THE KALDIPRESS
What are you guys thoughts on the kaldipress?
What are the opinions on McCafe?
I'm someone who does a lot of long highway trips (driving enthusiast + coffee enthusiast).
At home, I have my French Press, Aeropress, Moka Pot, and they're great.
But when I've been on the road for half a day, I will want a coffee break after 4-6 hours of driving.
McCafe has become a new staple, since they have locations all over the place.
I know it's not the best coffee, but it isn't too bad if I'm being honest, the price isn't outrageous. The convenience and place to sit is also fine for a break to get out of the afternoon sun.
One large Americano is my standard order. Sometimes a Cappuccino or Flat White if in the mood. It's definitely better and cheaper than Starbucks.
Wanted to get opinions from others here on what the thoughts are regarding McCafe? Good, bad, decent? What do others who travel by road do to fulfill the coffee needs?
Recommendations for cold brew (budget friendly, cuz im a student)
I don't know much about coffee, I'm learning it. I ike cold brew and sometimes, I also make and add some vanilla & cream foam when i want it sweeter, can you suggest me brands which are cheaper but also decent in taste.
That’s why I have trust issues
Starbucks lie to your face and call that medium-dark monstrosity as “blonde” roast. I remember feeling cheated when I bought their “light” Indian estate beans and all of them were in some range of medium roasts
Flavor-wise there’s nothing citrusy in blonde roasts and even the acidity is clearly lacking. But at least their dark roasts are nutty and chocolatey and my general preference when going Starbucks
WTS - agaro coffee machine and grinder
Hi! I'm selling my first ever coffee setup (used for less than a year) as I have upgraded my setup to Gaggia.
Agaro Imperial Coffee Machine along with 2 portafilters with a double basket, metal tamper and a dosing funnel - 5k with accessories
Agaro Grinder - 3k (works great and helps a lot in learning)
Both the machine and the grinder are in great condition and I would prefer to sell in Delhi.
This is just beyond my imagination. A stranger of this sub sent me this. Ache log do exist! ❤️❤️
So the story is such that a post on mogra was put up and I commented that one day I will also try it due to budget issue. Mostly nowadays I go for fraction 9 everyday gold for staple coffee brew. And then there was this guy (whom I have complimented in DMs not sure whether to mention his ID here not) asked for my address saying he will send it to me. I thought what a joke and me foolishly gave my address too. It took time but coffee finally arrived wth! Why do such people exist may god bless them!! I feel guilty idk why but he will definitely be getting a treat from my side. Cheers to lovely people out there and coffee yes!! ❤️🥰
Kept the packet to resting for 2 weeks. Roast date is 13th April.
Vietnamese Iced Coffee
Tried making Vietnamese iced coffee at home today without a phin filter, and honestly didn’t expect it to turn out this good.
Any tips to make it even better next time?
Thinking of trying Araku "Selection"—how does it compare to Blue Tokai?
Hey guys,
I’m considering picking up Araku Selection, but I’d love some humble perspective before I pull the trigger:
Compared to Blue Tokai: I’ve explored various BT roasts using a French Press. For those who've switched or tried both, how does Araku’s "Selection" (Medium-Dark) stack up in terms of flavor and quality? Is the ~₹655 price point justified?
The "Tin" Dilemma: As someone who appreciates good design but values freshness, is the tin actually functional for long-term storage, or should I just get the pouch and stick to my own airtight containers?
First-timer Advice: Is this specific roast a good "intro" to the brand for a French Press user, or should I look at their other offerings first?
Would appreciate your honest thoughts. Thanks!
Drop your iced latte recipes
I am now addicted to McDonald's iced latte and I can't get over it.
I can't afford to get it everyday. I'm very new to coffee. My idea of coffee is mixing instant coffee with hot milk.
Please help me with how I can make my own iced latte from scratch.
Delinghi finally listened!
I got the EC9555 yesterday, and I had seen older reviews of how difficult it is to remove the plastic piece inside the portafilter, but this one looked different than the one in videos, so I tried pulling it out with a plier, and was able to get the plastic out!!
No more cleaning nightmares and no more plastic contact to hot water anymore!
A newbie query for kaldipress/aeropress
My first time speciality coffee , Just received this Fraction 9 sampler , tried one of them - Whiskey Barrel Aged
Haven’t tried the other packs yet, but I’ll update in the comments once I go through all of them.
A question for those using Kaldipress/Aeropress - I used a single paper filter and the water started dripping almost immediately after pouring. Around 70–80% of the brew just leaked into the mug before I could even press.
What could be causing this? Grind size too coarse? Filter issue? Or am I just messing up the technique?
Would appreciate any tips.
TL;DR:
Kaldipress/Aeropress is dripping immediately after pouring (most coffee leaks before pressing). What’s causing this and how do I fix it?
