At my wit's end

I owed $15k last year (2024) and I'm going to be paying it off for the next 5 years.

I didn't change jobs or move or anything in 2025. I claimed 0. I thought I might even get a refund.

Nope. I owe $8k this year. That's my entire savings. And that just gets added to my existing balance? And what, same thing again next year? I'll just never pay it off?

How am I supposed to do this? Save every penny just to afford the tax bill at the end of the year? Take an extra $400 out of each check and donate it to the IRS? Intentionally take a lower paying job just to have a lower bill?

I'm so overwhelmed. I want to cash out my retirement account, pay it all off, and go spend the rest of my days on a motorcycle and cheap motels or live off grid or something. How the hell do people do this?

UPDATE: $9000 IRS taxes due

UPDATE: $9000 IRS taxes due

Posted awhile back on receiving a taxes due letter from the IRS for the sum of around $9,000. (See link if interested in more details.)

https://www.reddit.com/r/IRS/s/XyJfvyRt86

To summarize:

I’d accidentally sent in a one time payment for the 3rd quarter to the wrong tax year (2024 instead of 2025). The IRS said they had already issued a overpayment check and the consensus from everyone was to not cash that check, void it, and send it back ensuring the original date of payment was used to avoid interest and late penalties.

UPDATE:

I contacted the IRS as the check in question did not arrive by the deadline they gave. On contacting them they let me know the check had been marked as undeliverable the day after I had called and was then applied to the 2025 balance on my account. They said the payment was recorded from the date of the check issue and NOT from the date of my original payment. They did this automatically and then send me a new check with interest for the remaining balance with interest (about $560 total) instead of issuing a 2025 refund which would have been about $535.

I asked about potential penalties since the payment was for money I made in the 3rd quarter 2025 and they told me they saw no issues and I should be fine but sometimes they payment needed to process and clear before the system triggered potential late fees.

I got the check they sent and a CP-49 form explaining what they’d done. I do not see any mention of late fees or penalties but am concerned about cashing the new check since it sounded like the payment wasn’t applied from the original date and instead later at the time the check had been issued.

Happy to give any additional information if needed. Any pros out there that have had similar situation or advice on if I’m good to cash the new check or if I should wait a bit longer before I do so? It has been 2-3 weeks since my last conversation with the IRS so not sure if that’s been enough time for everything to clear up and me be good.

A musing of post-verification hope.

I'm pather who filed 2-17 accepted same day. I had blank transcripts and that verify button. Received a letter to verify on 3-18 and verified over the phone on 3-19.

Transcripts still blank as of Friday

Last year I verified on 3-4 and received my 846 ddd on 3-20. 2 weeks and 2 days.

It's been 2 weeks and 3 days.

So come on 846 Monday!

Tax preparer vs FreeTaxUSA

Hey everyone, I have an investment house which is fully rented out in NYC. I pay property taxes and mortgage interests based on the banks 1098 form. I tried doing tax on my own via FreeTaxUSA and they have recommended me to file using Itemized deductions however, when my tax preparer did it for me, they did standard deductions for both federal and state. Our federal return numbers ended up being the same, but NY state return was lower on his end. I am wondering why he would recommend standard deductions on an investment house that’s rented out when I pay for estate taxes, mortgage interest, expenses to fix the house. My taxes are simple with a W2 and not much else.

One month of relief and now more problems

I realize this is all my fault, but I have been trying to get a payment plan for back taxes since last May. I have spent hundreds of hours on the phone and had to send a couple of years in twice by certified mail and they still don't have them listed on my account.

But last month I felt like I hit the jackpot and finally got a payment plan. I sent a nice letter with the agent's identification number and the name she used.

So I've been scrambling to get money together to file and pay this year's income taxes. Even though I changed my withholding, I accidentally did one to my state, so the federal amount was short by $2100.

I just made my first installment payment according to the payment plan. My 2025 taxes filed and paid in full. I thought I was finally in good shape and could relax.

Yesterday I got a letter from the IRS CP22A saying they made an adjustment to my account and I owe another $3615 for interest and the interest is charge up to March 31. I have until April 27 to pay it and I have no money left.

It's so discouraging and there is still one year for which they didn't receive my tax form and I've sent that twice since June.

It's so discouraging because I will have to start calling again for this adjustment and if they ever get my taxes for the missing year, make calls again.

I understand that they are swamped because of firing workers. But if they did things a little differently they would have way less work to do.

I feel like sending them a suggestion that would save workers a lot of time and trouble. I was behind on the State of California taxes, too. Around the 3rd year they sent me a letter with a one time offer of a payment plan. I signed it and set up a direct payment from my bank and got it all paid back with no problems or calls.

Paper filing since Feb/8th and still not processed.

I paper-filed my taxes this year. Sent it with certified USPS mail on Feb 8th. Every time I check my IRS account, the tax statement says "No taxes filed 2025". I called them multiple times, and they advised me to just wait.

What should I do? Should I try e-filing the taxes?
Thank you

Really, 60 days after being told to wait 9 weeks after verification on Federal tax refund

I filed on 2.2.26 accepted the same day. Received verification notice on 2.27.26 and verified by phone on 2.28.26. Was told to wait 9 weeks. Totally fine with that, but now seeing a letter on my IRS account tonight that it’s under review for income etc is correct and wait another 60 days!!! Do they actually take that long? Simply frustrated!!

Ammended tax return

Hello people.

I filed 2 ammended tax return for the year 2025.

First ammended tax return received by irs last feb 2026.

Will have a refund of $2k+ because my tax preparer forgot to deduct the $25000 tip for the new deductions.

But i still didnt received the refund yet cause its still in “received”.

Second ammended tax return received by irs last mar 20 2026.

Will have a refund of $700 due to the premium tax credit for medical. Cause we received it late.

But when i checked it through irs portal, i only see the latest ammended return. Even if the first one still not yet completed.

Will i received my 2 refunds or they will just process the latest one?

Thank you.

IRS Direct Pay status stuck on "Originated" after CP504 payment

Got a CP504 notice for tax year 2021 issued on Feb 16. Paid through IRS Direct Pay on Feb 27, IRS debited the amount from my bank on March 2, but the portal status has been showing "Originated" ever since. Has anyone else seen this? Is this the final status or should it eventually update?

Also, I've already filed this year's tax return and received my refund on April 1, so it doesn't seem like the IRS withheld anything due to the outstanding 2021 balance. Does that mean the CP504 payment was successfully applied?

Filed a paper 2024 return, refund came fast

Although it took 5 weeks after delivery for the IRS to acknowledge receipt of the return it only took 2 weeks (and not the six communicated) for them to send the refund!

First time Owe Question

Hi All, this is the first year I am owing on my taxes due to early withdrawal towards purchasing a primary home. My question is, what is the process of repayment? I owe $14845 but don't want to do a bulk payment and want to enroll in short term payment plan, I also see that I can select a future date within the next 365 days for automatic deduction. I am not worried about the interest, Do I have to wait till I get a notice from IRS or enroll in the payment plan upfront?
