Hey guys,
I’m based in Sydney, Australia. I’ve got a car that’s about 7 years old it’s a Hyundai Elantra 2018
Recently drove through some water and the car started having issues. Took it to a mechanic and they said the engine is basically done.
I’ve attached a photo — the bottom of the engine (oil pan area) looks broken/damaged.
From what I understand, maybe water got into the engine and something inside broke?
Couple of questions:
Does this look like a hydrolocked engine / thrown rod?
Is the engine completely gone or worth repairing?
What are my options now in Australia?
Engine replacement?
Sell as-is?
Wreckers?
Rough idea of what I could still get for it?
Car is otherwise in decent condition, just the engine issue.
Would really appreciate any advice 🙏

Hey y'all, as the title says, trying to get opinions on service intervals and how you maintain yours!

I have a '25 Elantra, here in ON, Canada and I see majority of dealers have shorter service intervals than what the owner's manual says. For instance, I just hit 24k Kms (~15k miles) and as per the manual, I should be getting service #1 (as that is recommended at every 8k kms). The dealer however seem to have their own "Recommended Schedule" which asks me to service every 6k Kms (~3.7k miles). Is that just a money-grab thing because I definitely don't have severe driving as they recommend, I have no short-trips as my commute to work is 1 hr and mainly highway (20-30% of it is traffic, rest is cruising speeds).

Let me know how y'all manage the dealer's money-grab opportunities. TIA!

2023 Elantra overheating when AC is on.

This happened once about a week ago, then today while using the AC on the highway it happened again. It doesn't overheat immediately, it fluctuates for a while then the overheating came on about 25 minutes into my drive.

Also the fluctuation continues after the AC is off it just doesn't overheat

I recently replaced the plugs, swapped the coils, and checked the fuel injections on my 2021 Elantra SEL 2.0 after receiving the P0300, P302, and P0303 codes. However, I still get the code. Do I need to do a few drive cycles to clear it, and if so, how?

2023 hybrid Elantra - got it YESTERDAY. Whistling noise?

Purchased my car through Carvana and received it yesterday 5/7/26. Drove it to work and it was fine, as soon as I started to drive it on my way home I heard what sounds like whistling/water pot boiling? Literally had the car for about 27 hours. Carvana told me I have to take it to a dealership but the earliest appt available isn’t until Tuesday. Is this something that can wait? Should I even be driving the car?

Oil change frequency

I recently got a new to me 21 Elantra and had the first recommended oil change, per the sticker in the windows. I have never paid much attention other than noticing when it's getting close to the milage number. Today I noticed that the recommended milage is 15k miles and 6 months away, is that accurate? Change was done at the dealer, but tgat just seems extreme to me. Mentally I'm still a 3k/3 months mentality, but have things improved that much?

Anyone else noticing lower MPGs?

I just took a trip to the car wash about 2.7 miles from me totaling a trip of 5.4 miles and my car used about 16 miles worth of fuel? I'm confused on what's going on.

I have a 2020 Hyundai Elantra Value usually in Smart or Normal drive mode. I can't even reach the base 30 mpg that Hyundai suggests. The car has 67392 on the odometer, any advice would be appreciated.

Recently picked up a few of these hooks to help control cargo in my EN's trunk, unfortunately I apparently picked up the port installed kit (00018-ADUP4 which doesn't come with the templates) and not dealer installed option kit (00018 ADU05 which does come with the templates).

I was able to find a scanned copy of the previous instructions (from 2015) which does include templates, but not for the updated chassis and it doesn't appear any of the templates directly apply to the new chassis. Anyone happen to have the updated instructions or a link to them? Maybe somebody works at a dealer and could send me a link to them? The hyundaiaccessories.com site has the instructions uploaded, but unfortunately they don't include the templates either :/

Thanks in advance!

Need help matching original headlight pigtail to replacement (wire colors don’t match)

Working on a 2017 Hyundai Elantra Limited headlight connector. Passenger side pigtail got chewed up, so I’m replacing it with the connector ordered from the dealer.

Problem is the wiring doesn’t match at all:

* Original harness: pink, yellow, red, orange + 3 black wires (7 total used pins) (also 3 pins that have nothing in them / not utilized making 10 total)

* New pigtail: all black wires, 10 total pins with wires coming from them

Connector shape looks correct, but I’m not sure how to map the pins/wires correctly.

I’ve attached photos of:

* original connector

•new connector

* damaged harness area

What’s the correct way to map the original pin positions to the new connector when wire colors don’t match?

Also, for the three extra wires on the new connector , can I just cut those and heat shrink them to seal them off safely since they won’t be going to anything ?

Fairly new w anything electrical in vehicles just trying to fix my girlfriend’s headlight (passenger side low) to save some dough. Just trying to be careful and not miss anything since I am kinda new at this stuff

Thanks for looking !

Any wiring diagram or guidance would help a lot.

Horn issues.. 2024 limited

The other day I was driving and almost got into an accident, so I tried using my horn and it wouldn’t work at all. I tried pressing it lightly and harder, but nothing happened. I even checked the fuse and made sure the horn wire was connected.
I ended up not driving my car for a few days because I didn’t feel safe without a way to signal/honk at other drivers. Later, I started it up and drove it around the neighborhood, and suddenly the horn was working again like nothing happened.
Has anyone else dealt with this? I have a Hyundai Elantra with about 24k miles. I also got a horn assembly warranty extension notice in the mail about a year ago, so now I’m a little concerned since it randomly stopped working and then started working again.

Help!

Oil in the breather hose. I checked this with a turbo technician and he told me the turbo is fine but there might be an oil separator block or crankcase decompression issue , ignoring it for long can cause intercooler , turbo and Catalytic issues. Is this true? i really need the car to survive another 4 months cause rn i'm broke as hell

I noticed oil dropping too low after about 4000kms , i had to refill about a litre every 4K kms.

I also notice reduced mileage and thick black smoke when the car is accelerating.

Is it safe to drive for another 4 months? Is this issue expensive?

Is still worth an 2021 SEL Elantra with 165k miles?

Title: Is a 2021 Elantra SEL with 165k highway miles still worth buying, or am I asking for pain?

I’m considering buying a 2021 Hyundai Elantra SEL (US import) with around 165,000 miles. Before everyone instantly says “run away,” hear me out lol.

The car is significantly cheaper than other Elantras I’ve seen locally. The other options are around 135k-147k miles, but they’re also about $1k+ more expensive in my country, so I’m trying to figure out whether the extra money is actually worth it or if they’re all basically in the same “high mileage modern car” category anyway.

Important context:
- Most of these miles are likely American highway miles, not city abuse.
- The car looks VERY clean inside and outside.
- No visible accident damage.
- I don’t drive that much. Probably around 500-600 miles/month max.
- I work mostly using a motorcycle, so the car would mainly be for comfort, occasional Uber, errands, and normal driving.
- I’d probably keep it around 2 years.

I already understand this is NOT a “like new” car. I’m expecting:
- maintenance,
- suspension wear,
- maybe coils/sensors eventually,
- normal high mileage stuff.

What I’m trying to figure out is:

  1. Is the 2021 Elantra 2.0 MPI + IVT combo actually capable of surviving well past 165k if maintained properly?
  2. How risky is the IVT realistically at this mileage?
  3. For owners with 150k-200k+ miles, what started failing first?
  4. Is there a major difference between 135k and 165k on these specifically, or are both already “high mileage territory” anyway?
  5. If you bought one at 165k knowing the car was maintained and drove smoothly, would you personally do it?

Also:
- I plan to do preventive maintenance immediately.
- Oil, filters, scan, transmission drain/fill (NOT aggressive flush), etc.
- I’m not expecting perfection, just trying to avoid buying a ticking time bomb.

I’d really appreciate honest owner experiences, especially from people with HIGH mileage 2021+ Elantras specifically.
