Strong Strike Authorization Vote Underway at Hersheypark, Hershey Hotel & Giant Center

Just saw some updates on the labor situation at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. All three properties — Hersheypark, the Hershey Hotel, and the Giant Center — are currently holding strike authorization votes. Turnout has been notably strong over the past three days, with union members showing up consistently from morning through evening to cast their ballots

They’re hoping for some real movement from the company before the end of this week, but after rejecting three contracts from Hershey Entertainment & Resorts (HE&R), it looks like a strike is the likely next step. No official results will be released until every vote is counted.

The company already knows exactly what the union is demanding, yet negotiations remain stalled. They’ve put three contracts on the table that were essentially identical, with the third one actually being a step backward. All three were rejected by the membership — which is why this strike vote is now underway.

After three straight rejections, it seems the company keeps offering more of the same instead of addressing the core issues.

If you’re following this, feel free to share your thoughts below. Hoping the workers get a fair deal.

UNION STRONG

Relocating to Harrisburg soon Any leads on local IT / Admin roles?

Hi everyone!

I’m currently planning a move to the Harrisburg area in the next few months and I’m starting to dive into the local job market.

I’m currently an IT Administrator with about a year of professional experience and a B.S. in Computer Science. Most of my day-to-day involves managing Microsoft 365 environments and Active Directory, plus a lot of workstation deployment and general troubleshooting. I’ve spent a lot of time working with school-district-scale infrastructure, so I’m used to fast-paced environments where you have to wear a lot of hats.

I’ve already started looking into Commonwealth/State roles, but I know those can take a while. I’m curious about the private sector in the area. Are there any specific MSPs or tech companies that people actually enjoy working for? I’d also be interested in hearing about major health systems or schools that usually have solid internal IT teams.

If you have any recommendations on companies to check out (or ones to avoid!), I’d really appreciate the help. Also, if there are any local tech meetups or networking groups that are active, let me know!

Thanks in advance!

Downtown Harrisburg Revitalization

Since there's so much conversation around downtown and what to do we thought it'd be important to give some context. Take a look at the data and ask questions. So many of these vacant store fronts are the result of greed. Supply and demand. If there's an over supply and low demand than the price should adjust right? When it doesn't you end up with vacant store fronts. Some of these are being kept vacant intentionally for speculation (look at the Market St block with Harristown) and some are vacant because the price isn't adjusting.

Has the city explored PILOT (Payment in lieu of taxes) programs that other similar PA municipalities have? What vibrancy could return if entrepreneurs were able to take a bet on a business because rent is cheap? How can absentee landlords be forced to implement improvements or pay a vacancy tax?

The research methods for the current downtown plan through the PA Downtown Center are bad. They didn't do a real survey. If this $300k plan doesn't address these issues then it's going to be up to us citizens.

Inform yourself and speak out.

Several states have offered subsidies to residents forced off the ACA by the termination of federal assistance. Plus, the US House passed a bipartisan 3 year extension of the subsidies, which is now sitting in the Senate.

Do you need help with your Pennie premiums or support more help with affordability for health insurance for PA families.

Best ways to meet people around here in your 20s?

I’m 26 and was wondering what people around here actually do to meet new people or make friends. Just trying to get an idea of what kinds of social opportunities are out there locally in general.

Could be bars/clubs, events, hobby groups, classes, sports, volunteering, communities, etc. Feels like once you’re out of school it gets a lot harder to meet people naturally, so I’m curious what people here actually recommend.

I’ve heard of Harrisburg Young Professionals. Are they good?

Thanks for any help.

I drove from Midtown Harrisburg across the Harvey Taylor Bridge onto the HT bypass, carrying on to 32nd street in Camp Hill to the Capital City Mall and had green lights the entire way and made it there in like ten minutes.

Not sure of the exact stoplight count, but iykyk.

Played and lost a lottery ticket after that, and the Sixers blew the first game vs. the Knicks, but what a feeling.

Goodyear Blimp??

I was on a roof in Palmyra and I think I saw it flying by south of me at around 2 today, west to east. Didn't even know it was flying around here. Pretty bewildering to just see out of nowhere. Flight tracker matches with what I saw, so I think I'm right.

Looking for a short-term furnished place to stay in July

Hello Harrisburg Reddit,

I am a medical student who will be visiting the Harrisburg area in July for an internship at Community Osteopathic Hospital on Londonderry Road. I am looking to rent a furnished room for a short-term stay between July 5th and July 31st. The prices on Airbnb are a bit out of my budget as a student, so any price negotiations and contract terms are, of course, welcome. Here is a list of some preferences I have for any potential landlords in the area:

- Preferably female homeowner/landlord/renter (I am a female medical student and would just feel safer, nothing personal)

- The closer to the Community Osteopathic Hospital, the better

- Quiet time during the night, preferably between 10 am and 6 am, so I can rest after busy daytime hours during my internship

- A lock and key on my door to keep my personal items safe during the day, while I am away at the hospital during my internship for most of the day.

- I have nothing against a shared bathroom and pets; animals are fun! I am big on cleanliness and tidiness, and used to everyone naturally cleaning up after themselves. I have been a student for 7+ years and lived with all sorts of roommates, and have a long resume.

- Very willing to send any forms of ID, background check, verification, etc, and book through 3rd party websites where you may be listing a room.

This list is very negotiable, and I am open to any messages and questions. Budget is currently under $1k for the month, as, again, I am a VERY broke incoming 4th year medical student, but I can assure you that you probably won't even notice I am there since I will be spending the majority of my time at the hospital. Looking forward to meeting you!

Possible HersheyPark Union Maintenance STRIKE! Will affect Summer Season opening!

UPDATE! BREAKING NEWS: UNION Employees at Hersheypark, The Hotel Hershey, and Giant Center overwhelmingly REJECTED the company’s third “last, best, and final offer” on Thursday, May 7, at 4 p.m. A vote on whether to authorize a strike is now scheduled for next week.

Hersheypark is preparing to open seven days a week for the summer season on May 21, even as union maintenance workers continue critical contract negotiations with Hershey Entertainment & Resorts.

More than 200 skilled tradespeople in the maintenance department including:

•Carpenters
•Electricians
•HVAC technicians
•Ride mechanics
•Plumbers
•Welders
•Machinists
•Painters
•Laborers
•Central plant operators
•Utilities
•Sign Artist
•Garage auto mechanics

All are essential to safe park operations and guest experience. These workers perform daily ride inspections, maintain park utilities, manage emergency responses, and ensure the facilities remain clean and fully operational. Their expertise cannot be easily replaced by third-party contractors.

While Hershey Entertainment & Resorts has historically been viewed as a strong union workplace, employees say key benefits have eroded over time. In these negotiations, the maintenance team is seeking fair wage increases, more affordable health insurance, and higher shift premiums on less desirable shifts. They are also firmly opposed to any proposals that would devalue skilled trades, lower professional standards, or set the stage for weaker wages for these critical roles in the future.

With the latest offer REJECTED, a strike vote next week could lead to a work stoppage that disrupts the planned May 21 opening. A strike would also affect summer concerts and live events at the Giant Center and Hersheypark Stadium, as the contractors who work alongside the park’s maintenance team to set up stages and events are fellow union members who will not cross the picket line.

The union will need the support from the local community in Hershey, Lebanon, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and surrounding areas. A potential strike would affect not only park operations but also the many local businesses that depend on Hersheypark’s visitors. The maintenance team welcomes community backing from those who value their skilled work and understand the importance of fair compensation for the people who keep the park safe and running smoothly.

UNION STRONG

PREVIOUS POST
Hersheypark is set to open seven days a week for the summer starting May 21, and union employees at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts are voting again this week on a new contract.

More than 200 employees from Hersheypark, The Hotel Hershey, and Giant Center are voting over three days, with absentee ballots due Thursday, May 7.

The current contract expired March 15. Workers had already rejected an earlier proposal but agreed to a 60-day extension while talks continued. Since then, employees at Hershey Lodge and Hershey Country Club approved a revised deal, but workers at the other locations turned it down.

If the new proposal is rejected again, a strike vote could follow, which might IMPACT the park’s planned May 21 opening.

Word on the street: Actual questions about Juneteenth

Q: Why are we even celebrating Juneteenth two years later?

A: Juneteenth marks the OFFICIAL end of slavery in the United States. It is when the last enslaved people in Texas were finally freed.

Q: Well, why did it take so long? And why Texas?

A: The Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, but it only applied to Confederate states and they weren’t really interested in enforcing it. Texas was actually one of the last holdouts.

It took Union troops TWO YEARS to arrive in Galveston and uphold the law, making Juneteenth a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing fight for justice we still see today…

Come celebrate with food, drink, live music, and great company!

WHEN: Wednesday, June 17 6-8pm

Locals, help! For a family with elementary and high school kids, how would you describe the pros and cons or general feeling of both Mechanicsburg and Palmyra? We had previously looked at moving to Mechanicsburg, but didn’t feel the area was appealing to us. How does Palmyra stack up in terms of schools, downtown, rural, amenities etc? Would love to be in a place such as Lititz but fear we are priced out of the town even at a price point of $1 million. Is it similar at all? Thanks all!

Hello, as the title states, I’m looking for some good New York style pizza that I could find in Harrisburg.

I’m moving from NYS this month and am finding it hard to let go of the good pizza we have lol. I’ve visited Harrisburg a few times now but the pizzas I’ve had so far (which others around me rave about and suggested to me) are extremely thick, chewy, and saucy. Not a fan. I need a thin, crispy, savory slice.

I of course still have to do some exploring myself when I officially move but wanted to get some additional opinions beforehand.

Do you know of any good places in or around Harrisburg that may have what I’m looking for?

Have any of you who have also moved from New York found a go-to pizza shop in the Harrisburg area?

Please let me know all thoughts are appreciated.

TIA.
